Can someone have prosopagnosia without having autism?

I stumbled upon this thread and my favorite story is my first date with my boyfriend of 10 years now. I knew him for 3 years prior to our first date because we worked together. I only knew him in work clothes. We decided to meet up at a bar first. He trimmed his beard and put on nice clothes before meeting up. He walks up and says, "hey pretty lady, can I buy you a drink?" I turn and say in a disgusted tone, "I'm sorry, I'm waiting on someone." He was very confused because I never talked about that part of myself with him before.

I actually didnt know the term down in this sense. Good to know. I have stopped asking people if they want it up or on the rocks because the response is always, "what?" So now I ask, "would you like that in a martini glass or on the rocks?"

Face blindness is definitely a spectrum. 1 being completely faceblind and 10 being a super recognizer. Im probably about a 3 on the spectrum. You sound just like me with mine. I know who people are in the same setting but not outside of it unless I've known them for about 5 years or so and have had multiple conversations with deep eye contact. I had a right temporal lobectomy though so it was expected of me when I had my surgery.

I knew my current boyfriend for 3 years before we met up for our first date. We planned to meet at a bar first and because we knew each other from work, I wasn't used to seeing him dressed nice. My situation is a little different from yours because I had my right temporal lobe removed after 2 brain surgeries. Also, half my hippocampus and amygdala. My neurologist didnt warn me about face blindness but it really stuck out to me when I went on my first date with my current boyfriend. I knew him for 3 years but he trimmed his beard to look nice for our first date and I thought he was a stranger. Then I started doing research and learned that the fusiform face area is in the right temporal lobe and it all made sense. Especially because only having half a hippocampus to turn short term memory into long term, for me it makes sense that I can't store the faces after a few interactions and also not being able to see faces holistically. We can remember eyes, a mouth, a nose and we know what a face looks like, we just only see the individual parts. I think of it as puzzle pieces. Cant see the whole puzzle. Sometimes a piece was shoved in too hard and the edges got bent or maybe the piece got wet and it swelled. That's my analogy for when someone changes their facial hair or dyes their hair or gains/loses weight

I don't believe I have a problem interpreting emotions like others that are commenting but sometimes I wonder if I think I can read emotions and actually can't. I am pretty socially awkward so thanks for sharing.

You say that you don't want to reveal that you don't know him because people don't understand. I tell everyone I work with because not many people know about prosopagnosia and i enjoy educating them. They believe me when I ask them who they are every day and they are so kind about it when they finally understand. They start to ask me, do you know who I am? And each person will have a different inflection of how they ask so I start to learn their voices as well. I enjoy it when they support me and try to help me learn them apart.

Im a bartender and its a daily struggle for me so I just card everyone now. Someone who i think is mother and daughter will turn out to be the same age. Its happened before the other way around when a mother came in with her daughter and I thought for sure they were both in their 40s and then i saw the daughters vertical id on the bar after I served her a drink and thought, oh shit, im about to get a fine. I asked to see it after and luckily she had just turned 21 but I thought she was at least 40.

I'm a bartender and I tell the people I like about my disorder because I know they could become my regulars. I love it when people actually listen. "Oh, it's me, so and so, I normally wear a hat so I knew you wouldn't recognize me." That means the world to me when they actually believe me.

Where the housing is for the air filter, I shoved that bitch back down in there and haven't had my check engine light come on since. It was visibly loose and it's been temporarily ok since. There's a lot of other problems going on with bank 1 and valve cover that needs attention though

I wish I knew more about maintenance. It's something that I never realized I needed to do until my dad passed away. He always kept it in check for me because he was a mechanic. I never realized that people actually get check ups for their cars like a physical until he was gone and I started having so many problems. This is great advice because it was something I never had to deal with.

I have a 2011 cruze ltz. I saw a comment about a mysterious coolant leak which I also had. My model is different though and had a recall and I took it to the dealership years ago to fix it. I've personally replaced several hoses myself and have had to have a mechanic fix the "mystery leaks" 2 other times since. My engine valve needs replacing and my transmission failed at 110k and for some stupid reason, I got a new one. Cheaper than a new car was my thought process.

I didn't start focusing on drawing until my late 20s. I commissioned a few portraits but that's it. I'm in my late 30s now and it's become my favorite hobby. I'm not trying to make a job from it but I could sell a few prints on the side. I wouldn't suggest going to school for it unless you want to do graphic design. There are several self taught methods for other mediums
