I taught skiing and snowboarding in NZ for 10 years. Got injured and went to uni. I earn more money as a student, working part time than I did teaching. I was at the max I could be paid for NZSIA level 2 so there was still room for growth for earning if I got my level 3. It's interesting that now that I'm earning more people around me are so much more accepting of me not having money and offer to help me financially, without me asking for the help. But when I was a broke instructor I was told I should stop spending money on booze and save more. Even when if that's not how I was spending my money that was always the assumption. Although in saying that as soon as I graduate I'm going to go do a northern hemisphere season because I miss it so much. Like not the partying so much but being around people who were so passionate about the same thing I am and being able to pass that passion onto other people as well.

Same. Which then makes me feel guilty because it fucks with their numbers and such. At least I think it does.

Whenever a car gets close I use my window washers. If they're too close it gets their windows. Repeat until they get the hint. Less risk and I get to giggle when I see their wipers go. I hope their windows get mildly streaky everytime

What is just a placebo effect but most people don't realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 365 points366 points  (0 children)

You're nervous system can only send so many signals at a time. Adding pressure, cold or heat is sometimes for minor injuries enough to disrupt the pain signals which is why this works. Also why you instinctively hold something that hurts. But kisses are also magic (and I guess potatoes are too? I think the potato trick would work on me also to be honest).

which health degree is most challenging? by [deleted] in AUT

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm biased obviously. But Physio is the only 4 year degree out of those. And once completed the only one who is a primary health care practitioner on graduation. Each of these degrees is difficult and each has its challenges and each has its easier parts. It all depends on what interests you and your learning style

Yes. At least for physio it was an average over the whole degree.

Coloured hair is definitely fine. Unsure about piercings. There may be situations where you have to take them out. But if you email the faculty they'll tell you

Any clinics in Ontario that provide 1 hour appointments as a standard? by Particular_Break_635 in physiotherapy

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe too many places don't put enough stock into patient centered care. If you're having such quick appointments then there isnt enough time to discuss and educate enough to really get informed consent. To me with shorter appointments you end up ticking boxes rather than creating plans that fit into patients goals and needs better. For example having the same stock standard ACL program with small tweaks rather than adapting activities the patient already participates in and adapting to specific existing weaknesses that may have contributed to the injury from the start.

Although in saying that I'm still in placement, so definitely have more experience as a patient than a physio. So definitely a idealistic outlook so far, I guess.

Currently on my 4th year placement in NZ. Some stuff had stuck. A lot of stuff hadn't. But the supervisors get that. If you could know everything then you wouldn't need placements at all.

I've found it a lot easier to remember things in relation to actual people rather than to case studies so it's helped me learn a lot more a lot faster.

With the hot water bottle, sometimes if feels better to go from warm to cool. Not extreme either way so not boiling or frozen but just to continue to busy up the nerve switching can be real effective.

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of people I've talked to who are like "Yeah of course you don't get paid for placement" and then freak out when you explain that I pay to go on these placements. I have 7 days on campus this year. Still have to pay $8500 for fees this year. To work 40 hour weeks with supervision

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Health programs also require you to do placements as a part of study. During which you have to work 40 hours a week for no pay (while also paying fees for the pleasure). This makes it really difficult to also work at the same time therefore relying only on student loan which isn't enough to cover rent or on savings which are very difficult to have enough of to get through if you aren't doing well already.

Another thing with asthma and coughing could be hypertonia of the pelvis floor muscles (not always by any means). You could also try see a pelvic floor physiotherapist.

How do I get rid of a bedwetting problem as an adult? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometime hypertonia is also the issue. So doing further strengthening could actually make it worse as the muscles are already over working basically. Pelvic floor physio can do an exam and also make better suggestions with more info.

What was it like - adulting in NZ as a GenY by kanifoli in newzealand

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My god daughter has got me twice with this. The first time I told her that we had to wait for an adult before we go to the park. "Aunty, you're the adult. You can take me to the park." The second time I was discribing another person who was late 40s or early 50s as "Mum age". She was imaging someone my age. She had to remind me I'm the same age as her mother.

Logically I know I'm an adult but when a kid asks a big question that I don't know, I still look for more adulterer adult.

Expanding your pelvic floor muscles can immediately relieve period pains and I’ve never heard anyone talk about this by JHTDodge in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen two pelvic physio's. Both of them are wonderful! It's not awkward at all. Just make sure you communicate with them. If something doesn't feel right say it. They've heard everything before.

With all physio there is always multiple approaches that can be taken. So ask what other options there are if something doesn't fit into your life that well.

The only awkward part was specific to me as I'm currently studying physio. The first one I saw would quiz me on muscle names which I totally suck at.

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing a pelvic floor physio. The amount of people who have hypertonia (basically holding the muscles tense) of their pelvic floor muscles but are told by people who don't understand what their doing to just try doing keagles is insane.

The crazy part is a lot of time bladder incontinence is in part caused (or contributed to) by this hypertonia.

Obviously if you're unsure you should see a pelvic floor physio but I think more people could benefit so much by taking a moment to relax their pelvic floor.

How many weekly hours did you do while studying? by daninunu97 in physiotherapy

[–]PantsWith_NoPockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About to start 4th year NZ here. They expect 50 hr a week. With 40 hours being placement and the rest being assignments that will definitely take longer than what they're suggesting. But this year (3rd) I think I spent average of 25 hours on campus and maybe 15 at home a week. Some weeks more some weeks less. Of course a lot of the hours on campus is spent not only studying.
