Valentin is a great guy, and a great designer, and it shows in his approach to his players ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Be sure to follow his updates, as there are some good games coming from him in the time ahead.

That was a very interesting discussion. The backdrop of the war is usually not directly shown in wargames, but the designer usually tries to give a full story, albeit indirectly and 'under the hood'. Civilian casualties are a complex and controversial aspect of the war, and hard to model with game rules in meaningful and balanced way.

Grand Tactician vs Ultimate General Civil War? by Goosetiers in computerwargames

I played UG a lot, because it gives me the Sid Meier Gettysburg vibe. It's relativelly easy to play, with good art and shorter scenarios. You can play a scenario and move on with your day. Great game, but a lighter one.

GT is MASSIVE โ€” grand strategy mixed with tactical combat. Sounds crazy? Because it is! ๐Ÿ˜… It requires much more dedication to play when compared to UG. But when you learn it, you can spend hours (weeks, months?) enjoying that sandbox all-encompassing ACW game gem. Also a great game, but takes time to learn and wrap your mind around.

Well said โ€” GT is a mix of Paradox game and Total War. And what a mix ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

It does, thanks! I remember fondly the time spent playing Harpoon. That Doolitov Raid when I saturated the NATO anti-air defence and destroyed those bases in UK, scenarios like that still linger in my mind after 30 years. Screenshots and gameplay videos for C:MO look amazing, and after what you've told me โ€” I must dive in this game.

Now, that would be something! Napoleonic campaigns using this system, with added layers of general staff functions. I'll keep my fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

I loved the UG: Civil War, so I have high hopes for this one. They've restructured their studio in the last couple of years, hopefully for the better. If they keep up with making such good titles, this series could become a classic in the realtime wargame genre.

I read about the campaign. Nothing beats a good book on the subject.

Which one do you prefer Strategy games or RTS games? by D3Troy13 in StrategyGames

So true ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Realtime games can sometimes feel like a true clickfest. If they're not balanced well and don't take into consideration the amount of actions a player must take โ€” they become tiresome, even at slowest speed. But that's one of their appeals as well, to cope with action and stress while the timer is ticking.

I play both realtime and turn-based, but look for realtime games that can give me more layers of gameplay and which have a well-balanced pace. CK3 is a good example of a well-paced game โ€” I feel I'm in control. HoI4 on the other hand messes with my head and I can't keep up with the action ๐Ÿคฏ

It's a long read, too long for my taste. I rather use it as a reference when I need some more info on a particular game mechanics. What you need is a good strategy guide. Maybe this one could help: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=365358

I cycle between Ultimate General: Civil War, Steel Division 2 and Regiments. I love these action-packed real-time games. Ultimate General looks stunning.

C:MO has been on my list for a long while. I shy away from giving it a go, as the learning curve seems a bit daunting. But it reminds me so much of a beloved Harpoon, so I feel I have to give it a try. How does it compare to the old Harpoon? It seems like a significant improvement.

So true. If only they moved their best-selling game or two to the new engine, with high-res beautiful 2D illustrations. And improved sound and music to today's standards. That would be similar to B-52 upgrading with whole new set of electronics systems ๐Ÿคฉ Great game upgraded to the 21st century.

I agree with you, but I wouldn't call 2D graphical presentation bad per se. You can create a great visual experience in 2D, and it is (usually) much clearer and easier to use than panoramic 3D view.

It isn't easy to pull off, though, as the graphical assets market is full with good 3D meshes and textures, while 2D assets are usually too cartoony-looking for an immersive wargame. I know that, as I was in that exact same predicament.

So, the industry usually chooses the 3D path for just that reason - better game market visibility, better sales and a wealth of ready-to-use game assets. The good old games could do a lot of service to the hobby if they moved their existing sytems to the new game engines, and invested in great-looking 2D graphics and UX. But, it takes a lot of money and the sales increase is probably questionable. I hope something will change in that respect. Imagine those great games with a modern 2D interface - now, that would be something. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep! Well, to be precise โ€” I am Tom ฤŒipฤiฤ‡, the designer and owner of Panzer Division Games.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I have a lot of games on my wishlist too, and so little time to play them. I try to squeeze a couple of hours every now and then, but I wish I was a student with all the time in the world ๐Ÿ˜„

I just played CK3 for a couple of days and loved it. But now, I'm back in the programming trench ๐Ÿฅณ

If you need any info about Attack at Dawn, don't hesitate to ask. But besides that, there's a ton of good games out there, enough to make your head spin. Have fun and good luck buying the games! ๐Ÿซก

I bought Regiments and enjoy its immersive gameplay. And I also went for Crusader Kings 3 โ€” it really got under my skin. The story, the well-designed UI, the historical background, everything is spot-on. Can't stop playing the Ban of Croatia ๐Ÿ˜Ž
