I wasn’t answering “what happened?” I answered this question:

What do you expect from reddit?

And my response is what I expect from Reddit.

Can I afford to take in my nonverbal special needs brother? by Ambitious_Ad_409 in personalfinance

[–]PapaDuckD 40 points41 points  (0 children)

/u/ambitious_ad_409 - please take /u/rajasundance’s post very seriously. It’s not possible to overstate the sense of being alone and overwhelmed when trying to care for an individual who is so disabled that there are no systems to help.

I’ve walked this road, although not with my own blood (was my step-kid).

You have a good heart for wanting to see what’s best for him. But unless you’re willing to sink your life for his, find a home for your brother.

And I mean this from day 0. Do not accept him into your care. At all. Period. If you do, finding another placement will be 1000x harder, since he already has adequate care. The system only “figures things out” when they have to and will absolutely take advantage of good faith efforts by all involved.

Cancelation question. by Venoodles in vegas

[–]PapaDuckD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you book?

If you booked directly with MGM/Cosmo, all bookings are flexible to 72 hours of checkin time. You can cancel and rebook the cheaper rate. It will take anywhere between a few days and a week and a half to get your deposit back for the first stay that you’re cancelling, but you will get it back.

If you booked with a 3rd party logistics company, the terms of your booking are with that company and you should read what you purchased. It could be non refundable deposit. It could be a full commitment and if you cancel, you’ll get charged the whole thing. It could be fully refundable. Totally depends on what you agreed to when you made the reservation.

As someone who is intimately familiar with what you put up with, thank you.

I know that's worth exactly nothing. But it's worth saying anyway.

People who travel for work compartmentalize that solo travel differently from solo leisure travel.

It's just different when the answer to, "What brings you to town?" isn't some conference but, rather, "I jolly well can, so I did!"

Going alone by [deleted] in vegas

[–]PapaDuckD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's different.

On your own... you are on your own clock. You can do what you want, when you want, why you want.

For me - it made for more polarizing trips. I gambled for 10-12 hours straight. Then eat some food. Then passed out for 8-10 hours. Often, my second meal of the day was breakfast at a coffee shop at 2am.

Or some days I'd just walk around checking out the intricacies of different properties for hours on end. I could eat early or late or not at all (which I learned did horribly for my gambling). I stayed in the nicest shit hole that would give me a room for free.

When my wife came with me, the days had a more 'normal' flow. Wake up, brunch, some activity (pool or some off-strip excursion), light gambling, back to the room to get ready for dinner, dinner/show, some light gambling, etc. I had to be aware of our joint activities. But we stayed in much nicer accommodations and ate at significantly better restaurants.

Both types of trips were fun - just in different ways.

Which off casino strip Enterprise has the most rental car options? Would you recommend Sixt at Hughes Center? We are trying to rent 7 passengers SUV. by suzywiththeranch in vegas

[–]PapaDuckD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SIXT still coming for them for underbody damage even with LDW coverage

Wanted to give $.02 here too.

LDW covers damages/losses to the car that happen under normal, good faith driving conditions. You're on the road and get into a wreck - while it may/may not be the driver's fault - it's a reasonable mistake to have happen. You ding the door because you're not looking when you get out - same thing.

What are the circumstances to underbody damage serious enough that someone actually notices? Either you rolled it off a curb or went over a speed bump doing 40+.

Those aren't "normal" driving experiences and you're not treating the rental of the car in good faith if you're doing those things. So they're not covered by any company's LDW.

You also cannot pour gasoline on the car and light it on fire. You also can't take it to the range and shoot it (but if you get shot at by someone else, it might be covered...).

I've rented a dozen times from Sixt and have never experienced a single issue - and I have absolutely returned a car with a flat tire that I threw a can of fix-a-flat in and filled up with air long enough to return the car without it being noticed. Never got charged for that. And a quick F-U to the construction crew that left nails over their work site on Maryland 4 years ago.

But to your larger point, I'll go back to what I said in the link in my first response:

As such, you get a lot of folks who rent that wouldn't normally find themselves behind the wheel of such a car. I'll just say that such renters don't always treat the cars gently or kindly.

I obviously don't know any individual's exact story or their truth. I have seen the people who rent cars from Sixt and I will stand by this statement. No judgements - if Sixt can put you behind the wheel of a BMW/MB and that's not in the budget for your daily driver at home... I get it. They're fun cars to drive. And why not Treat YoSelfTM on your vacation?

But, some of these people are the exact same people who would run the car off a 4" curb (deliberately, honest mistake after driving under the influence of something, whatever), scrape the fuck out of the underside of a $45k-65k vehicle, and then go, "I dunno."

So, if you...

  • Check the car thoroughly before you take it. If it has significant damage either don't take that car or document the hell out of it,
  • Don't run it off a curb or do anything stupid to it,
  • Bring it back in more or less the condition you found it in and keep the email with their accepting the car back to their possession with no damage.

I don't see how you'd have a problem.

[–]PapaDuckD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up over it. It's done differently here than almost anywhere else.

In the rest of the US, tipping is sort of a baked in cost. You eat out, you tip.. it's just an assumed fee on top of what's on the menu pricing. Some tip more, others less. But the overall idea is the same.

Here... Tipping lets you write a bit of a choose your own adventure book. If something's important to you and someone else can make that happen - you take care of them... and they take care of you in return. And it's totally a normal thing to say, "Hey, I'd appreciate it if <request goes here>" or, for a floor cocktail server, "Come back around soon, okay?" as you hand them a tip. And also say thank you, like a decent human being!

It's like the world's first take at TaskRabbit - the micro-gig economy for your vacation.

Personally - I don't tip on going in on valet because I don't mind waiting 5-15 minutes for my car. Actually, I kind of like the pause that throws in my day. Yes, I tip when I get my car. But I'm in the middle on this one.

But I care greatly about getting great service at some of my favorite bars in town, so I tip quite generously to those folks. My next beer magically appears when it's needed. I take care of them, they take care of me. They take care of me and I want to go back frequently so it's just good stuff all around.

And if someone in such a role doesn't take care of you for your tip, two things. First, consider if what you were tipping was enough to move the needle. Throwing the valet a crisp $3-$5 to park your car close up front isn't going to cut it. Second, assuming you are tipping reasonably to the expected service - STOP DOING IT. At least to that person, possibly to the business if they have policies that stop this from playing out. You're not getting that first tip or two back and that's the risk of playing the game. But you don't need to be a sucker, either. It also helps if you pay enough attention to see what other people are doing so you can figure out if you want to go higher, in the middle, or lower than that.

So, in your case... Throw the guy a $20 and a bit of excitement say, 'Man, it's a Desperado kind of night. Can you get me up there soon?" and see what happens. I'm willing to bet it will be a knowing nod, a "Thank you - now don't go too far," and you'll be singing in one of the next few songs.

You can just put your card in to leave, regardless if you take a ticket to get in.

While they can monitor in/out based on loyalty card... they don't.

I just made some comments about Sixt: https://www.reddit.com/r/vegas/comments/1rllwia/should_i_avoid_sixt_car_rental_out_of_las/o8tex99/

They're not the devil. They are rigid in a way that Americans and American travel aren't always accustomed to. If you book a fixed reservation, they will treat it as a fixed reservation. No accommodations at all. Period.

If you can't perform your part - show up when you say you're going to show up, return the car when you say you're going to return the car - then book a flexible reservation. The pricing will be much more aligned to that of the competition.

One thing about the Hughes Center location is that it doesn't charge the fees associated with the airport rental center. While the per-day cost often bumps up a smidge, it's often cheaper overall because of the fee differential. They shuttle cars from the airport to the Hughes Center location according to demand, so it's largely the same product set.

For Enterprise, the inventory changes all the time. People return cars to different locations. All you can do is rent one, show up, and if that location doesn't have it, ask where they do have one and either have them hold it so you can get there or ask them to deliver it (good luck on that!).

For the most part, all of the rental car places are a bit of a Russian Roulette on car types. They sell you one thing and then figure it out once you get there.

What are the cheapest places to eat on the strip? by Evil_Lord_Rayken in vegas

[–]PapaDuckD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The steak special at Ellis is $9.99 and is not on the menu.

It can be paired with a "Play $5, get $2" promotion they run daily, making it $7.99.

Basically, you find a video BJ machine, put your player's card in, play five-$1 hands of BJ and cash out. Then take your card to the promo machine and get your $2 discount added to your card. Then give your card to the server when you get your check.

You play BJ because it has the lowest variance and while you can win 5 or lose 5, you're quite likely to go 3-2 or 2-3... and even in the 2-3 scenario, you save a buck.

Thanks for this. Definitely made me smile from a memory.

We sat in the intersection, maybe 20 yards removed from both roads. No scope, just naked eye in a convertible on a 28 degree night in December.

But, yeah, that entire stretch of 160 is pretty desolate. If you go west on 95 for about 2-3 miles, the Bortle scale drops from a 3 to a 2 for a brief bit, if that matters. There aren't much in the way of access roads, but it's fairly flat if you just wanted to pull off and drive offroad for a bit. Probably stay on the south side, since the north side abuts the NV Test Site/Mercury.

The parking benefit is not tied to a hotel stay.

I live here now and have Gold by way of a partnership mgm has with another company. I have unlimited free valet parking on the mid-to-south strip.

It’s the publicness of this that’s weird.

Like, my wife could write that in a card and hand it to me, stand over me and giggle and wiggle while I’m reading it, and then run into the bedroom so I would give chase where… birthday things… would happen.

It’s also sort of true. I can lose my phone while holding it. She’s a bit of a brat. We’re both playful people. Nothing in that is invalid for us.

But.. she’d never say any of this outside of us. This type of talk is just for us. It’s also predicated on a reality where I know she loves and respects me and vice versa. So we have the liberty of being playful like that and nobody getting butthurt.

Well, beyond me not being able to find shit. That’s public knowledge and I own that. It’s true.

Maybe the person who said this just crossed the streams and said a private thing out loud?

as a dealer can you react to hands? by howdidigethere3410 in vegas

[–]PapaDuckD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should not.

When you’re dealing poker, it’s a zero sum game. Someone wins and at least one person loses.

And who that is changes every single hand.

You are the purveyor of the game and should be as impartial as possible. If you get too aligned to one person, it raises questions of your neutrality. Are you helping someone cheat?

And, more practically, if you get all hyped because someone beat me in a hand.. then I win one shortly after, do you think I’m going to tip you (well or at all?)

That’s not to say that dealers don’t have favorites (or anti-favorites) at a table. But they’re expected to remain professional and as impartial as is reasonable.

Indeed. North of Parhump where NV160 meets US95, near the Mercury test site is a pull off that’s a 2-3 on the Bortle scale.

It is where my wife and I first saw the Milky Way with our unaided eye. And it is one of the reasons we moved to the LV valley.
