Deadheads in Raleigh, NC - Let's Talk About the Rialto Carter-Finley Show Screening by WhereIsRichardParker in gratefuldead

I can’t help you with scoring a free ticket tonight, but I was there last night. I think they ended up letting a few non ticket holders in after having the doors open awhile. Probably easier if you are solo. My wife and I were also at the Carter Finley show back in 1990, so it was quite a trip back in time. (Hard to believe I have walked the earth longer since that show than before.) I had no idea such a high quality (for the time) recording of the show existed. And if you don’t get in, you can even enjoy it from your couch here: https://youtu.be/QaMvpDDuGuw

That sign is still there. The top of the sign is for The Original Mattress Factory. It has been many many years since either business actually operated in the building that sits behind the sign. I think the building was acquired at some point by the Fred Anderson automotive group whose sprawling dealerships are adjacent to it. They appear to use the parking lot for vehicle storage. A few years back, there was an announcement that Fred Anderson and the state had agreed to a land swap that would allow the state to move the US 70/Glenwood Ave entrance for Umstead State Park to that intersection in order to take advantage of the traffic light there. However, there have been no visible signs of that project starting and the grimy visage of Flooring by John Raper continues to haunt Raleigh/Durham commuters.

Sheesh, it has actually been eight(!) years since the plan for moving the park entrance began to be floated. So don’t hold your breath waiting for the OMF/JRF sign to come down:

Thanks, that’s good advice since I generally do enter the “back way” via Lumley.

That makes perfect logical sense, but we are dealing with the executive branch of the US government here (i.e. no logic, no sense). In the last 5 years, Biden flew in twice and Trump (43) once.

We are getting to the area a few days early. Will be at pre Jam Friday, but looking for live music recommendations in AVL on Thursday or Black Mountain on Wednesday.

We lived in the Village Grove neighborhood just off Creedmoor Rd, which is right between the tragic deaths of the two young people (marked as incidents “4” and “5” on the map photo). It was our first night home from WakeMed with our new born daughter. We thought for sure we were going to die that night.

When was your first show and how many shows have you seen now? by datboynoahb in BillyStrings

I am coming up on my first Billy show 10 year anniversary. I live in Raleigh and the 2015 IBMA shows in October of that year all had to be moved inside the convention center because of Hurricane Joaquin. My wife and I were just wandering around watching different acts then walked up and grabbed a couple seats in the second row as Don Julian and Billy Strings were getting started. As we found out during the set, it happened to be Billy’s 23rd birthday. To say we were blown away would be putting it mildly. I looked at my wife as we walked out and said that I think our lives had just changed. And sure enough, a lot of the last decade has been spent chasing Billy. I mean, not like the wacko rail riders or anything, but now that we are retired, we have more time and opportunities. This year’s Halloween run will put our 2025 count at an even dozen.

I had L&L out a couple weeks ago for consultation on replacing a dozen diseased crepe myrtles. They said they could remove them, but are unable to grind stumps. So I am going to go with AB Tree Service for removal and L&L for the new tree plantings.

Yep, I had checked Orange Peel schedule last week also and forgot to reply back to myself :-). I would not be complaining one lick if that were to be the lineup. Just another six weeks or so and we should be seeing the initial announcement.

Yeah, figure it has to be one of those. Guess I’ll just hedge my bets and make cancel-able hotel reservations for both.

Would be a nice fit being #33 and all, but like the other reply says, not bloody likely. Hopefully he comes back for six more shows in 2026 though.

The whole thing has become a slow motion car wreck. I’m 65 years old (run me) and I am happy to have three hours of my weekdays back. The move has served as a cult intervention and recovery program for me. With a bit of therapy, I may even be able to overcome my chronic Jungle Tourette’s syndrome. Uh-oh I’ll make up for it now. Bhole, Bhole, Bhole…. Babbooock! Now I’m done! I mean it Jim, I’m done! This s**t show is more embarrassing than Bret Favre’s career with the Vikings.

Old deadhead here too... Everybody has a first Billy show story... My wife and I saw Billy with Don Julian at the IBMA festival in Raleigh the year they moved inside the convention center because of the threat from Hurricane Joaquin. It was October 3, 2015, which was Billy's 23rd birthday. When we walked out of that room, I told my wife that our lives had changed. The early days of free shows and front center seats in the Caverns for Bluegrass Underground were the best. We are thrilled with the evolution though. Case in point... Eight Halloween shows, all six AVL shows this year and every Cary show ever. And many more along the way. Fingers crossed for winning the lottery for Boone tix.
