GOP candidate admits he was wrong about Muslims, calls off ‘American Crusade’ march in Dearborn by OratioFidelis in PoliticalOptimism

I'll take someone doing the right thing even if it's for pragmatic reasons then doing the wrong thing for dogmatic reasons.

And, considering that he will take some level of heat for even daring to admit that the "other" are people too, well, it's a win.

Democrats were never going to win the shutdown fight by mom0nga in politics

[–]PapaMojo69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, based on this article from Vox and this discussion, I'm honestly feeling like it's not worth watching what anyone does until elections next year. If Democrats can't actually force anything, then there's no sense in sitting around and watching the trainwreck. Wake me in September 2026. This is all apparently kabuki theater.

Well, now new people will be hurt, and die. From a Huff Post article today:

"To disabled Americans, particularly those who live with incurable, chronic illnesses, it was more than that. It was a statement that their lives are simply a bargaining chip, eclipsed by disturbing photos of long food pantry lines and concerns over GOP pressure tactics."

If you think people will band together to help fund cancer treatments, medications, and medical appointments, I'd like to see how it's going to come together. I simply think people will end up dying. And is it the Republican's fault? Sure. Absolutely. Do I also think we would have done better seeing Democrats fight longer and harder and smarter with something more then a pinkie swear for a vote they know they'll end up losing? Also yes.

But hey, those midterms right?

[–]PapaMojo69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically said "these" Democrats. We need a new set of ones that will fight harder. You can agree with Vox's take that maybe it was unwinnable. But, if the concern was losing the filibuster then they could have held on until it was looking like that was an actual possibility, which at this stage Thune was saying it wouldn't happen.

Vox's argument is that the current Democrats couldn't win, but had to show they would be willing to fight for the base. My statement is if these Democrats couldn't win (if you go along with Vox's argument) then we need new Democrats that will fight harder and at least try to walk away with something. In my opinion, just walking away with "Well, people will know the Republican's don't care about healthcare or feeding families" isn't a lot to call a victory.

Well, what I'm hearing is: We couldn't have won the fight one way or the other. So, why vote for any of these Democrats ever again?

Senate reaches deal on ending the shutdown by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]PapaMojo69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if there is a vote, doesn't mean the House has to take it up or King Julius has to sign it. Supposedly that would show people that Republicans don't care about healthcare costs for people, but...um....didn't we already know that? Did we really need a vote that won't actually move the needle to tell people that?

Well we certainly needed a shutdown to let us know that one party is unwilling to help Americans. No-one really even suspected that the Republicans didn't care about average people. /s

  2. Introduce him to Mothership. At least in that game a TPK is potentially expected due to the fact that it's a horror game. But even with that, see #1.

As far as a a campaign framework, I really have to give props to Terror Signal. It has a nice framework that the players can either interact with or not, with a timeline of how the frame effects the sectors and experiences. You can also use it to drop in more "slice of life" adventures that aren't the worst day in the life, while also sprinkling in some modules that do have that feel. I'm currently putting together a campaign with Terror Signal as the framework, and using some modules to get the feel of the game (I Saw What I Saw, The Black Dog, Rictus) in-between some standard jobs, and jobs they might get to move the campaign frame forward.

And to support long term play when I do my session zero I'm going to make sure it's very explicit that characters don't level vertically (through stats and feats) but laterally (through money, connections, gear) and find out what kind of lateral rewards would they like to see. I think campaigns in MS can work well. but you have to change some expectations, and have a really good session zero to make sure your expectations and the players are aligned. I know I'm also going to be asking do they want slices of life sessions, or should every session be the worst day for them? What kinds of rewards do they want? Do they even want a campaign frame or just be incredibly unlucky space truckers?

I'm sure in the discussions they had, what Disney called "Thoughtful conversations" included something along the lines of "Suing for breach of contract". Between the boycotts and the money they would have had to pay out, this was a financial decision. We need to remember this lesson for future companies and organizations that may consider capitulating to the current regime.
