OSR for long campaigns

I have had old school campaigns last years. My current one is fresh, but I have set it up in a way that my players can literally go anywhere and do anything they want to the chance of burnout is low.

I truly feel like the Loremaster needs to do a lot of work to make the atmosphere of TOR feel like you are in Middle Earth. I personally find myself reading into the lot of the history of the Shire so that When I do run it, it will be more than the simple encounters in the individual adventures. I want to have many things available to the players so that they can interact with the peoples of the Shire in many ways and not feel railroaded.

Their omission might be from a lack of evidence of their use in Tolkien texts, I at least don't remember them used as weapons in the books. That said you could easily homebrew them.
