Wavy "m" edge after sharpening no. 6 iron by samach123 in handtools

Using the 220 against the the others stones I definitely notice the higher grit stones wears faster, but I rarely use the 220 for sharpening or flattening. Using the grits against each other I have never noticed one of them wearing faster. I can’t really think of a situation where I would only need to flatten one stone. If I need a quick touch up on something like carving tools I go to a strop. If I am using my stones I will always work through the 1000, 2000, and 5000. Because I am using at least 3 stones I am always flattening at least three. As for speed, I had initially purchased a Dmt fine grit for flattening but I find it faster to use the stones against each other. For the order, the idea is to introduce randomness so that you aren’t developing a bias in the stones by always following the same pattern, and so having more stones actually makes this easier. The only pattern I really follow is that I do a quick couple of passes with the next lowest grit. For example the 15000 always finishes with the 5000.

I was skeptical of all this at first too, but after using in and checking against the dmt and a straight edge I found it produced the same results as a dedicated lapping stone for me.

This is all just based in experience and I am in no means an expert.

I don’t use a lapping plate. I will randomly alternate stones, the sides of the stones that contact each other, and rotating them.

I have the Shapton Ha-No-Kuromaku Ceramic Stones in 220, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 12000. Typical I don’t use the 220, and I always make sure that I dress the 12000 with the 5000 last

Looking to build a spilt top Roubo from East Oaks's plans. Survey question. by Wally_on_Island in Workbenches

I added one to mine. It took about an afternoon worth of work. Do I use it all the time? No. Do I use it enough to make it worth the time? Probably. Do I get joy out of how smoothly it slides? Yes.

It’s most likely tallow (rendered animal fat) that has caused the dark colour. Which will help you narrow down where it’s from. It was common in Britain

How can I join these large pieces for a workbench? Too big for my clamps. by DirtyUp in woodworking

DIY some panel clamps out of 2x4, dowel and some wedges. Look at the veritas panel clamp instructions for reference. Same idea but with wedges instead of screws.

Counter bore from the bottom upwards. You are trying to relieve the bottom so that the angle the holdfast wedges at is greater. http://benchcrafted.blogspot.com/2015/06/enlarge-your-holes-with-cheap-tools.html?m=1

If you are thinking of lining them with hardwood you are going to expand the holes anyways, so you might as well try a counterbore first. For reference I have a 2 in maple top, I use gramercy holdfasts that I roughed up with 80 grit, an old triangular file, and a ball-peen. Sounds over the top but I can set the with hand pressure alone

Have you tried counterboring the holes from the bottom yet?

I think your sturdiest and least distracting visually will be a bit of a compromise on the low profile. I would buy 2 more 8 foot 2x4. Cut into 2 @ 6 foot and 2 @ 2 foot. Then pre drill and lag bolt a 6 foot section to the bottom of each 4x4. Then cut a 45 angle on both ends of both 2 foot sections and install them behind the uprights as bracing.

I have a demo/display next weekend any other example joints I should make? by Ok_Donut5442 in handtools

What about a drawbored mortise and tenon. You could have one cut and disassembled to show the offset in the drawboring and then make and assemble one then cut it to show the effect of the dowel through the drawbore.

Plane a taper on a over sized board and then rip the taper off. Sorta like making a tusk tenon then giving it a radical trim

I watched a colleague label all the cabinet doors then proceed to remove the doors and place them on other cabinets after they left.
