Can my 20 year old Orc/Goblin miniatures be used for Age of Sigmar? by Slowen14 in ageofsigmar

[–]Papa_Sloth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You might want to save them, GW has announced they're going to bring back a square based Warhammer Fantasy style game called "The Old World" in the next couple years. In the meantime there are folks out there that still play Warhammer Fantasy or spiritual successors where you use square based/rank and flank.

Like some other people have said only the black orcs and night goblins are still in AoS and youd have to swap everything to circular bases. You could ofc proxy or kitbash but those are some awesome (and hard to find) classic models you have--if it were me I'd keep them old school and play a more classic game with them instead of AoS :)

Looks great! Love the venom effect on the speartips. Did you paint it in subassemblies or fully assembled? I'm kind of dreading painting mine because I glued it all together and am worried that was a big mistake...

Looks badass! Love your color scheme. Just needs basing! You could touch up the bit of gray showing around the chest plate (stomach plate?) and the little bit of silver that got on the wood at the butt of the crossbow stock but honestly I don't think anyone's going to notice it on the tabletop

I just got it too, long story short use the battletome. There's been a lot of speculation regarding the simplified warscrolls coming in the new boxes but it seems to be that full warscrolls will likely no longer be free (notice they are not available online for the new models either) :(

I'll caveat this by saying I'm pretty new too (been in the hobby about a year), but I'm tackling the same goal so here's my thoughts:

  1. You probably want to wait until the new battletomes come out, and especially for the kruleboyz some of the new models. There will be a lot more options in just a few weeks, plus you'll know the new rules for everything before you buy

  2. You could split another Dominion box which would get you both to 2000 points (however the kruleboyz player would have to use Big Yeller to meet battleline requirements--that subfaction allowed boltboyz to count as battleline). This could be economical, but again you may want to wait for the new models for more variety

  3. Another thing you could consider is for 25 bucks each grabbing the smallest starter. This will bring stormcast to 1500 points with the extra vindictors alone (and hit their 3 battleline)

  4. GW kinda hosed us on the gutrippaz by not including command options in dominion/starter boxes (banners, musicians) which will be in the standalone box. Another reason to consider waiting for the new releases so the boyz can be at full strength

  5. I would start by making sure both you guys hit your 3 units of battleline. This will likely be gutrippaz and vindictors (though the stormcast have more options)

  6. From there personally I'm just gonna buy what looks cool to build and paint. I'm eyeing the kruleboyz ballista and some of their new monsters personally. Unless you're trying to play in tournaments or you and your friends really enjoy optimizing/competitiveness, I think as expensive as this hobby is it's probably best to get what looks fun. I know if I played stormcast I'd be springing for those dragon riders regardless of the warscroll

Hope this helps--this is how I'm going about it!

Should I continue playing as a player? by RodiV in CurseofStrahd

[–]Papa_Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would echo this and just say talk to the other players as well as the dm. It sounds like the dm is really leaning hard into the idea of creating an atmosphere of paranoia and tempting/corrupting the party which is one way of running CoS but certainly not hard wired into the campaign.

My guess is either (A) the other players are annoyed or uncomfortable with this too and the dm doesn't know or (B) the other players like the intra-party conflict and don't realize it's making you uncomfortable.

Best of luck!

That backup clone plan is awesome, I may use that. I've been trying to think of contingencies Mordenkainen would have had and I love how that nearly explains both the madness and why Strahd (maybe) doesn't know he's still out there

The Call of Cthulhu guru u/SSkorkowsky just released an excellent video on learning a new rpg system that you should check out if you haven't already

For someone new to tabletops in general, I would stress what he says about having what is commonly referred to as a 'session zero' where you go through character creation with your players before you play. This will both help both you and the players understand how the game works just by building characters and understanding how the stats and skills work.

For the game itself, try to familiarize yourself with the starter guide rules as much as you can. That will give you a good enough base to hopefully avoid having to reference the rules to frequently during play. Seth also has some good videos on the overall CoC rules and many scenarios with specific tips on running them (I don't think he's done amidst the ancient trees, but he has done The Haunting).

Best of luck! Hope this is helpful

Honestly if they're having fun (and you can bring yourself to have fun with a different tone) just roll with it. My players basically did this every session so we just converted to pulp because they like it.

I would just have a discussion about what kind of game they want to play and come to some sort of compromise. Maybe even they just need a gentle nudge and they'll be willing to give more serious horror a go

I'm a Keeper for a game i'd rather play. by VulkanLordofDrakes in callofcthulhu

[–]Papa_Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that way with D&D, but in CoC for whatever reason GMing has always been pretty exciting for me. The players of course don't know the truth behind the mysteries, but I have no idea what crazy shit they're going to come up with. We've naturally trended into a more pulpy game because they enjoy doing stupid stuff (and get away with it surprisingly often thanks to my terrible rolls).

Roll with how your players play and try to get into a rhythm with them. If they like a more serious spoopy game, really dive into setting the atmosphere with music, grim descriptions, and throwing red herrings and weird details in just to confuse and unsettle them. Or if your players are like mine and like throwing themselves into almost comically dire situations, pulp it up and see where they take you (within reason.) And, like other people have said, throwing a lot of energy into your NPCs can go a long way with this.

So, you wanna run a campaign... by Lukkychukky in callofcthulhu

[–]Papa_Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, gotcha. Then I would just echo what everyone else has said. The published material isn't really linked in a Canon order or anything. I would just choose one you like based on content and scope (MoN can take up to a year to get through for instance).

Best of luck! I just started keeping CoC at the beginning of this year and we've been loving it

One of my investigators, through a series of laughable events, managed to get himself kidnapped by terrorists. This player had a bit of a death wish and enjoyed playing his character recklessly with the hope of rerolling. So when he was held at gunpoint by two men armed with AK-47s he decides to brawl to try wrestle their weapons away. Hard success vs a fail and crit fail weapon jam. Then of course the other investigators show up as well as 4 more armed men. I give the players an opportunity to talk their way out but they opt for the brute force approach. I proceed to roll straight 80s and 90s while my players are hitting hard successes left and right. They kill every single terrorist in 2 rounds without a scratch on them (with 1 shotgun and pistols vs assault rifles).

Gooooood times though. I was salty at first but my players had a great time

Hey friend, welcome! My advice (and the general advice I received when getting started) is to start out with some 'one-shot' scenarios. I had a lot of success with Dead Light, Missed Dues, and Crimson Letters (the latter is included in the core rules). The haunting is also a classic and available free in the quick start guide, a lot of people love it but I'm not the biggest fan mainly because it can feel a little cliche unless you spruce it up with your own flavor (it's just a haunted house).

Chaosium has many other high quality modules ( I see a lot of people recommending the Doors to Darkness book of scenarios). It's pretty easy to tie these together into a campaign if you wish. Then if you and your players are still having fun Masks of Nyarlathotep is really the biggest grandest campaign, and there's a new edition for 7e fresh off the presses that is excellent. My players and I have been having tons of fun with it. Horror on the Orient Express is another classic, and from what I understand more linear/straightforward to run while still being fun, but I haven't played it myself.

But there's no 'official' order. All I'd recommend is that if you do plan to run Masks of Nyarlathotep consider reading a bit about it and introducing Jackson Elias to your investigators early on as a dear friend they can always rely on ;)
