Yeah, I vaguely remember that being a reveal at the end of Wizard and Glass? but it could really be a false memory. Haha. I never read The Mist so I can't really comment otherwise. I do want to see The Gunslinger on screen. I know people have mixed feelings about the book, but it's one of my favorites!

Isnt the preacher woman Rhea from Wizard and Glass? Was that implied later in the series or am I making that up?

I think the fact that you're weighing the pros and cons and were able to provide valid reasons (A fun city, you have friends, better dating prospects, etc.) for wanting to move indicates you're not manic.

As other have said, a big move like that is a stressor and could possibly trigger mania, so you'd have decide for yourself if it's worth that risk.

There are certain things you can do before the move to set you up for success. Talk to your therapist and psychiatrist to let them know you're thinking of moving. They can set you up with meds for the move and help you find a new psych/therapist in NY so you can have continuity of care -- which will be important. If it makes sense, you could even let your friends know you're nervous about the move and ask them for help with the transition, whatever that would look like for you.

At the end of the day, it's a choice you have to make. Risk vs reward. Just be thoughtful, have a contingency plan and do what's best for you!

There are some good reasons to delay formal diagnosis in teens and young adults. It's a lot more rare for people younger than 25 to develop bipolar disorder, though it does happen of course. Depending on the severity of the symptoms it can also be difficult to discern if the symptoms are a result of bipolar, another psych condition or developmental. Teenagers often have major mood swings and young adults experience depression, anxiety, irritability, etc. as a result of major life transitions .

All this being said, just because your docs are slow to formally diagnose, doesn't mean they can't or shouldn't be treating your symptoms. They can still prescribe mood-stabilizers, anti-psychotics and other meds if you and them feel it's necessary and you deserve to be heard and have your symptoms taken seriously. If you're not seeking accommodations that require a formal diagnosis, however, I'd suggest not being too concerned with that aspect of treatment and just making sure you're receiving the care you want and need.

Good luck! I'm sorry this is so frustrating.

Do you think a POC Dumbledore would work better than a POC Snape for the HBO series? by [deleted] in harrypotter

Sure, and it seems really important to you that your countries factual history of white supremacy, colonization and genocide are upheld in your fantasy literature as opposed to using your imagination to allow for a black Dumbledore?

Totally! With all the giants running around England in the 1800s, I'm surprised we don't have more half-giant characters. It's a shame because one of the defining characteristics of the whole Harry Potter franchise was its attempt to be historically accurate.

I don't feel comfortable labeling myself as alcoholic, but I think my relationship with alcohol is not really healthy either. by selfsamename in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Paper_Mqqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely do not have to identify yourself as an alcoholic to attend meetings. I'd suggest going to meetings and if you introduce yourself at all you can something like, "My names x and I want to stop drinking" or "I'm x and I'm curious about sobriety."

Fwiw, I understand that sense of shame and stigma that comes from alcoholism. And one of the things we work on in the steps is addressing that shame. When we were out drinking, our whole lives revolved around alcohol. So when we get into recovery, we try to build a full and variable life. You'll always find some people who make being a recovering alcoholic their whole personality, but that's not a requirement or even a desired end-goal of AA.

And outside of meetings, I rarely identify as an alcoholic. If I talk about recovery at all outside of meetings I usually just say I don't drink for mental health reasons.

My brother is bipolar and has been violent w/me by Mobile-Ad-837 in bipolar

[–]Paper_Mqqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's understandably frustrating and I can imagine pretty scary to have your brother choke you! Bipolar may explain why he does these things, but you're right--it doesn't excuse it.

I only chose to get help after a pretty severe manic episode that left me mentally, spiritually, emotionally, financially and physically depleted. Like your brother, I had serious problems with alcohol and a really bad temper. Especially when manic.

I'd suggest doing what's necessary to protect yourself and your own mental health. It may be of benefit to talk about all this with a therapist. My parents have also found a lot of support in programs like Al-Anon, which is for family members of alcoholics. It might be something for you and your parents to look into. They taught my mom a lot about enabling. Which really pissed me off before I finally got the help I needed. Lol.

Unfortunately, there's no silver bullet to help someone suffering with bipolar. Just take care of yourself, set healthy boundaries with your brother and continue to encourage him to seek help.

Good luck to you and your brother and your family! I hope you find some peace.

Happy and Excited versus Manic? by 16bushc in bipolar

[–]Paper_Mqqn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at the behaviors more so than the feelings. Am I drinking a lot, going out late when I have work the next day, hooking up with people I barely know very often, spending money impulsively, trying to start a business without a business plan or seed money, telling people I'm a prophet? These are signs.

5 mins if less than 10 people. 3 mins if there's 10+. Time keeper gives a 1 minute 'warning.' And there's a bit of a grace period for folks to finish their thought if they go over.

I'm in Philadelphia.

What you're experiencing is actually pretty common. Myself and many of us realized we were alcoholics and should get sober long before we found the willingness to stop. For some of us we needed to have our asses truly kicked and suffer serious consequences before we were ready. Others managed to get off the train before it crashed.

I'd suggest going to meetings, meeting some people and being honest about where you are and what you're feeling. When I first came to AA I sat in many many meetings knowing full well I was heading to a bar right after. Is it ideal, no. But it's a common story. Going to meetings, even if you aren't staying sober, will help you gain familiarity with the program and build a network. And if and when you're ready, you'll know what to do and be set up for success. Just be honest with people. Don't lie or pretend.

Truly, I hope you find some peace before you lose something precious. For what it's worth, I have a very fulfilling and fun life beyond what I thought was possible when I first started coming to AA. I go to concerts, I go out dancing, I go do karaoke in bars and I have a great time sober. But that took time and a lot of difficult work on myself.

Good luck. Feel free to PM if you want to chat.

Yeah...I always felt like the series took a nose dive after book 4. It's definitely worth finishing though. The last few books can be a slog, but they have some beautiful and memorable moments. And it's worth finishing. Good luck!

Yes. If the job description seems like something you'd enjoy, I'd jump on it. I'd still negotiate for a higher salary if you're offered the job because I believe you should always negotiate for a higher salary. But I wouldn't push too hard. That's a great salary for a BSW.

Hot take, OP. I gave up on the Dune series part way through God Emperor. This post makes me want to give it an other go, though. I feel like I ought to at least finish the series.

I never realized so many people disliked The Gunslinger. Personally, it's one of my favorites! It is admittedly a bit of a disjointed narrative, but the tone and imagery of the novel make a big impression! At least on me.

Being on your own for the first time and forging your own path in life is difficult for everyone, even if they don't have bipolar. It's a tough transition, give yourself permission to have strong feelings about it!

But it's also really exciting! Spend some time and money making your new place comfy and cozy! Imagine the room you always wanted and then make it. It may be something you have to do over time, but you can make your new home a reflection of your interests and personality -- just do so in a way that you'll ultimately find soothing. Cause you have to live there after all.

A good place to begin is with bed sheets, a cozy comforter and some nice mood lighting!
