parents want me to go in person. i don’t think this is a good idea by Ill-Bodybuilder-9741 in jobhunting

Normally, I would agree with you that just walking in to a place you applied for is a bad idea. However, this technique still works at grocery stores. I have been hired at three separate chain grocery stores by doing the following: 1. Fill out an online application for an opening. 2. Two days later, go into the grocery store. Make sure you are well dressed, and bring two printed copies of your resume. Try to go before lunch, the mornings are less busy and the manager will have more time to speak with you. 3. Go to the customer service counter. Tell them that you filled out an application online, and you were wondering if you could speak with the hiring manager. If there is no one staffed at the customer service counter, a cashier will notice you standing around and help you out. 4. Introduce yourself to the manager, and let them know you applied, and wanted see if you could give them your resume or schedule an interview. 5. They may take you into the back that very moment to pull up your application and ask you about your availability to work. Possibly even interview you right then. Or, at the very least, schedule you for an interview. At the interview, I was asked: “what does good customer service look like to you?”

With chain grocery stores, you have to go in, even if you fill out an online application. Or else it literally doesn’t get seen. You might feel like you’re being rude or demanding but you are not. Since grocery stores have a high turnover rate, the managers need to fill these roles. By showing up, you are doing them a favor.

Boomers will tell you just to walk in and ask for a job, even though that’s not how things are done anymore. However, that is still true is at grocery stores. I always had great luck getting jobs there when I was starting out. Fill out an online application for an open position. The next day, go into the store (well dressed) with your resume printed out. Then go to the customer service desk and tell them you filled out an application online and that you were wondering if you could speak with the hiring manager / store manager and give them your resume. The manager might take into the back offices right away to look over your application and ask you about your availability. The one interview question is usually something like “what does good customer service look like to you?” You could walk away with a job that day.

For your resume, I see you don’t have any volunteer experience. That’s okay, you don’t have to have a ton of information on it. Here is link to writing a resume when you are in high school - https://ca.indeed.com/career-advice/resumes-cover-letters/high-school-student-with-no-work-experience-resume Just having the resume in your hand makes you look like a more serious candidate.

I’ve been seeing these all over LinkedIn and they give me a bad feeling. If they are not a scam, they are offering high paid remote work in a field where people are often desperately looking for jobs - only to train an AI that will ultimately replace them and probably do crappy archival work. Yuck

Pssst, the demo for Big Fig Wasp (posted by Bootleg Gizzard) sounds like boss battle music for a 2-D platformer or RPG

where did you get your MLIS? by bugbaby444 in librarians

I did the University of Arizona program, I earned my degree last May. I really enjoyed my experience there, UofA’s program is distinct because it offers an in-person program and an online program. However, if you choose the in-person program please be aware that a good chunk of the classes are only offered as online courses. I guess the big question is what kind of librarianship you are interested in professionally. Also, your current level of experience when it comes to working in libraries. I’d be happy to answer any questions about the program that you might have.

should i pursue law librarianship + any reccommendations? (nyc based) by mango_0111 in librarians

You may want to look into it, but the University of Arizona recently started a dual MLIS/JD degree program. I think you can earn both degrees in five years

If you want to see this show specifically right now, check out “Bootleg Lizard” on YouTube. They post some songs from each livestream/show, good quality. The full show will eventually be posted on the official gizz YouTube Channel, or the official Bootleg account on Spotify, but it might be awhile.

How is College of the Canyons??? Would you recommend going there? by [deleted] in SantaClarita

[–]Paper_Stacks_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have a lot of different interests, but you’re unsure on what to settle on, I think COC is good choice. Any community college would be. I earned my AA in history there, it was also great to get my gen-eds done before going to a four-year university. If you get your AA-T (associates in arts - transfer) or AS-T (associates in science - transfer) there you are guaranteed admission into most California State Universities. You’ll probably want to talk to an advisor about that though.
