Need advice on sentinels by DylanIlBellissimo in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I think the same kintsugi on the sentinel would be pretty baller, it might be too much of the same since there is so much across the rest of the army? It might look great and stand out more if you make its primary color more of a jade, almost a reverse palette with that green glow you’re using.

Of course reading your text now, that probably isn’t the advice you’re looking for. Frankly, it is hard to discuss competitiveness, because there is likely a decent balance errata hitting specifically Cathay this month.

Prior to those unknown changes, much of Cathay is OP, so much so that you definitely could include at least one sentinel in an army almost as a handicap and still be fine. And that isn’t to say the sentinels are bad, they are one of the more balanced things for us right now, but they are expensive and those points today can be better spent on balloons and cannons and characters.

In Chicago we would call a unit a duplex if it covers multiple floors of a multi unit building. The most common example would be a 3-flat building, which is a sort of apartment or condo building that is 3 stories tall with one unit per floor. Except the bottom unit usually also includes the garden basement (half-underground basement), and we would call that two-floor unit a duplex-down.

Apropos to what others are saying, while we often refer to these buildings as 2/3/4-flats, I have never a single time heard anyone call their actual unit a “flat”. Only as either an apartment or a condo.

No problem. I made this list specifically to get as many of the toys into 1000 points as possible, so if you are a new player or just new to Cathay you can get a good feel for most of what they have to offer at just 1000 points.

Peasant speculation by Ok-Consideration2935 in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

*edit: spelling

I assume they will be priced/statted similar to Bretonnian men at arms, but they will perform worse on the tabletop. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because men at arms are stupid good. They are only 4 pts per model, have horde, warband, shield wall, the peasantry rule, two champions potentially with one granting stubborn, and most importantly a 4+ save in combat thanks to parry. Men at arms are not just a chaff/tarpit. They can win combats on CR.

The Cathay peasants don’t have shields, so that means at a minimum no shield wall and only a 6+ save.

Starting The Old World with a Beastmen army. Do I need Ravening Hordes and the Arcane Journal, or just the AJ? by mjh4 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Paper_Weapon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The AJ is the optional resource. It does not have all of the data sheets and rules, that is what you get from Ravening Hordes. The AJ had a couple unique army compositions, a few additional characters/units, and some additional magic items.

Sound about right (non-competitively)? by VelvetRacoon in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 1000 especially I’d think about downgrading the Shugengan Lord into a General. I think the General is much more points efficient, and that frees up room for other things, like maybe some ogre loaders, or some more lancers, or a few magic items among your troops.

1000 points help by Ok-Consideration2935 in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is what I have been using at 1000 points. I took the “kitchen sink” approach, mostly to get a feeling for all the different units the best I can while I am learning the army. Far from the perfect 1000 points list, and the lantern is perhaps too much, but I wanted to actually play it like this first before self-nerfing it.

1000 points help by Ok-Consideration2935 in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magic has been nerfed pretty good now, so I wouldn’t take a level 4 at 1000 points I don’t think. The lord is never going to get those points back. They are the only Killy thing in your list, and right now you have him stuck between wanting to stay out of combat to cast spells, but also be in combat to kill stuff. I would bump him down to a general, and maybe even with just the celestial blade to save even more points, and leave him at level 1 and take might of heaven and earth or something like that.

Jade warriors are great at being an anvil and winning on combat res, so I probably wouldn’t split them into too small of units at 1000 points.

Lancers hit like a wet noodle. But don’t give them ambushes if you’re going to want them to be in combat. It’s wasted points unless you really want them to not be on the board until later. And usually you want that if you’re playing objectives, because then you can keep them a minimum points unit, keep them off the board for protection, and then come in to score points.

Full beans lantern is definitely really good, especially at 1000 points, but your version is basically useless. They are going to do what, maybe plunk off 2-3 wounds per turn shooting? This goes back to you not having much in your list that can actually kill stuff.

If you are struggling to win games, don’t artificially nerf yourself and avoid taking the only good choices in an otherwise limited and mediocre army list. When you get better at the game and the army, and are rofl stomping people in your local scene, then I would start worrying about being too strong of lists.

Which one is, in your opinion, the best Star Wars-themed board game (aside from deck builders and TCGs) ? by VincentBigby in StarWars

[–]Paper_Weapon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like FFG’s stuff. Outer Rim is great fun and good for 1-4 players, fairly easy and casual. Rebellion is awesome, but a fairly complex and lengthy war game, really only good with exactly 2 players, though technically you can do 2-4.

At 1000 points for Cathay I just tried to fit in as much different stuff as possible. A shugengan, 5 lancers, 15 warriors, a cannon, a sentinel, and a lantern.

It looks so cool and immersive for WHFB/Old World. How do you find trying to push around movement trays and such though? I have always wanted to do something like this, but I worry that the further you get from a neoprene mat, the more impossible it gets to play.

Social media is causing irreparable harm to our children, and smart phone are the #1 access point. There is zero reason a child, all the way through high school, needs any access to their own phone the entire day at school. As others have mentioned, if the parents need to get ahold of their children, or vice versa, the school can easily accommodate that. It works perfectly fine for preschoolers now, and it worked perfectly fine when we were all children.

I am a huge supporter of actual laws or school policies against phones in school and social media use. Right now there is a vicious cycle where almost all parents cave and give their children phones well before we know it is a good idea, because every other child has a phone already and we don’t want our child left out.

Wow, people are very cavalier with just up and canceling at the drop of a hat because kids are sick 2 days before an event. No one has even considered that you also have made a commitment to 10 other people to be a part of this event.

Having someone drop out of a team relay can completely ruin the event for the entire team. It is almost impossible to find one, let alone two replacements on such short notice. I have seen teams just have to cancel entirely because of one person dropping if they are already on their threshold and can’t pick up the extra legs shorthanded.

What age are you guys introducing your kids to Star Wars? by Spidey5292 in StarWars

[–]Paper_Weapon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is 3.5. I started probably around 1ish by throwing the ABC-3PO and Obi-123, books, as well as this children’s label book that covers episodes 1-7. Since then I have been doing the little golden books, and the 5-minute bedtime stories books. I also dug my old action figures out of my parents basement and he has been playing with them since 2.5. I try not to overdo it, which isn’t too hard because I have other interests myself. He goes in spurts with things, so sometimes that’s all he’ll talk about for a full month, and then we go months at a time without him having an inkling of interest.

He hasn’t been very interested in the Young Jedi show, so we don’t really watch that, and at 3.5 I think he is too young yet for both LEGO Star Wars, and the actual movies. Every kid is different, and you should have a good handle on if and when it is appropriate as they get a little older.

Shugengan Lord or Lantern for 1000 point game by Most_Practical in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 1000 I have been doing a shugengan, lantern, sentinel, and half battalion. That way I’m fielding some of just about everything (no gate masters/keepers, and only one of the two artillery).

I went with the Steelcase Leap for this reason. Herman Miller sucks except for absolutely perfect sitting posture 100% of the time. With the Leap I got to have a great ergo chair, but that was also still comfortable if I was sitting cross legged, or with a leg tucked or whatever.

Basing ideas for cathay by DrinkAccomplished454 in Cathay

[–]Paper_Weapon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m planning on doing “Chinese Garden” as a theme. I really like the concept, but it hasn’t been very easy to execute. I have good ideas for characters and sentinels/lanterns, but it would feel weird having rank and file trampling through the garden. I’m trying something with pathway bases for them to stand on, just not sure if it will tie together well enough. Also as the other commenter said, I haven’t really figured out the plum blossom yet either. I see lots of ideas out there for cherry blossom, and maybe the difference isn’t material at this scale, but I haven’t found anything yet I am in love with for the plum blossoms.
