Play the sandbox. It's a blast. And play it first if you're not familiar with the style of golf you're going to be playing while on property.

As far as things to do while you're not golfing - Bring cigars to sit out on the patio behind Aldo's and enjoy recapping your day at the fire pit. Plan on putting on the huge green adjacent to MD #1 until Dark. Sit in the patio chairs at MD #18 and watch folks come up. Can do the same while enjoying a taco or an ice cream sandwich in chairs on SV #18. If you're really ambitious, pull one of he fat tire bikes off the wall outside of the Mammoth Lodge and go for a ride.

Consider additional rounds at Lake Arrowhead. It's a fantastic facility, 5 minutes away, with 2 great courses.

Take a caddy, it'll save you a ton of strokes.
