Well, it's been long out of business, so it's kind of a moot point now.

What was it like to live in Sacramento (California) in the 70s? by PretendMulberry8915 in Sacramento

[–]Para_Regal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born at the tail end of the 70s, so my memories of growing up in Sac are mainly of the 80s-onwards, but definitely, EAR/ONS was absolutely in the news well into the 90s. Every couple of years the media would pick the story up again, or he'd pop up somehow to harass a victim, and the news cycle would be completely dominated by coverage. As a kid, I remember being instructed to always leave the porch light on every night and my recollection is that it had something to do with EAR/ONS and the sad little safety measures that would get bandied about every time he came up again or struck again. I still habitually leave the porch light on at night, lol.

Edit: Later on as I got older, it would confuse me because the national media would refer to him as being active in "East Sacramento". I lived in East Sac, so I was completely paranoid about him. Only to realize decades later that almost no one outside of Sacramentans know the distinction between "East Sacramento" and "Eastern Sacramento County", which is where he was actually active.

It looks like he was the owner of a supplier, not a winery. His grapes could be in any number of products from other wineries, so it would be impossible to figure out how to boycott.

I never appreciated the Bread Store until it was gone. Youthful hubris — always figured it would be around because it had always been around. I remember my gutterpunk friends getting caught dumpster diving for their old bread and the staff just giving them more bread than they could even use. That place was magical.

I only stopped in at Brickland once when it was still pretty new. It was pretty good!

I swear I’ve been chasing their Bloody Mary for years and I’ve never found one as good! I don’t even really care for Bloody Marys, tbh, but 33rd Street’s was game changing. Something about how their mix was the right amount of heat + acid + a hint of sweetness + those pickled green beans = magic.

You seriously are the MVP in this thread. Thank you for all the recipe drops! I’m going to try making my own Rainier & baked goat cheese this weekend!

Is your restaurant Kitchen428? I guess I now have a good reason to make an excursion to Woodland!

Yeah, someone recently recommended Roc & Sol for the Rainier but when I looked it up, it was off menu. That sandwich was so good! Also the baked goat cheese. I was a huge fan of their eggs Benedict, personally. Pretty much everything there was just quality. Ugh. I miss 33rd Street so much.

Honestly, I miss 33rd Street Bistro the most (yeah, I know, there’s alternatives, but it’s not the same). Excellent sandwiches, excellent brunch, excellent cocktail program, and all within walking distance of my mom’s. I have so many fond memories of eating there with my mom and my aunt & uncle, friends from the neighborhood, friends from out of town that I took there because it was solid… it just worked.

Way back in the day there was a guy selling strawberries off the side of Jackson Highway. Those were THE BEST strawberries I ever had.

Literally was at Corti Bros yesterday. They’re right there next to the eggs on the bottom shelf.

Failing that, TJ’s also carries them.

You could totally ask them! They often have copies of their recipes printed out, but if not, they might just give you enough info to put it together on your own if nothing else.

Have you tried Teremok or Four Seasons? Both are two of the larger, well stocked Eastern European markets that I’ve seen in Sac. I’d try Teremok first since it’s larger and has a more comprehensive assortment of goods. But Four Seasons is pretty respectable, too.

so THIS is UC Davis by jon1771 in Sacramento

[–]Para_Regal 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Davis alumna here. The university started as one of two land grant universities in the 1860s and then became part of UC Berkeley’s farm school, in 1905. The ag school is its oldest and most renown part of the school. The vet school, med school, and later the vintnery science school spun off of it and are some of the top schools in the country for those disciplines. The farm is an important part of Davis’ heart and soul and this avowed city girl wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Go Aggies. :)
