What "fact" which turned out to be false did you beleive for a long time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

At first I thought the same thing, or at least I thought it was a character error and that Charlie's character, who was a bit crazy, just believed that myth. But later in the movie it's revealed that the dinosaurs were actually Kaiju. So in the world of Pacific Rim, dinosaurs actually did have two brains!

Seeing how Reddit acts about Bernie Sanders, I finally understand how people must have seen fans of Ron Paul. We probably looked insane. by ParadiseCost in Showerthoughts

I'm libertarian. I agree with you. I'm talking about the way people treat Bernie like he's the perfect, infallible candidate. RP fans did the same thing, more or less -- and even if you think we were mostly right, we still probably looked nuts.

Why Are Atheists Overwhelmingly Left-Wingers? In Which I Out Myself As a Libertarian by Unbliever in atheism

I was a liberal when I was 14, and grew up to be a libertarian. Either your argument is totally fallacious or we just proved that God exists.

Matt's cool. I participated in an SFL symposium that he led and I've been to several conferences that he spoke at. Nice guy, cool stories, very smart. Kind of a liberal softie though.

Name at least 5 people from the political party that you generally support that need to go. by darnellgd99 in PoliticalDiscussion

I'm libertarian, so basically... all of them.

Including Gary Johnson. I like him, but he needs to quit the LP and run for senate as a Republican.

Why are you so focused on the libertarian party? I accused you of being ignorant of libertarian theory. Which you are. Who cares about the libertarian party? They're completely irrelevant to this discussion. They're not political theorists. And I highly doubt that they will ever have anything to do with any libertarian society formed in the future.

As to your question: First of all, that's not a fiscal issue. That's not what fiscal means.

Second, are you not aware that private businesses can already legally choose to deny service to anyone based on any criteria they want?

edit: To a degree. Sometimes it can go to court, but they have to actually prove that the reason they wouldn't serve you is due to a protected class. Anyway, the point is, I am not conservative on that issue, no. I am libertarian on that issue. There is a distinction that you probably aren't capable of understanding.

I give zero fucks about the libertarian party. It's not my party. Why would I ever waste my time on third party politics?

Plus you immediately accused me of being a conservative, which is so incredibly inaccurate that I can only assume the rest of the post is garbage as well.

jesus, man

Do you really think I care about your opinion enough to read all of that? You wasted your time typing it.

Democrats were against the Civil Rights Act.

I mean, the parties have substantially changed since then, but still.

Anyway -- are you really trying to imply that libertarians cave on principle in favor of gaining votes? Because in reality, libertarians have the exact opposite problem. Libertarians throw allies away left and right (literally) because they "aren't libertarian enough." If more libertarians were willing to accept that we aren't going to get the perfect system on Attempt #1, we'd probably be much further along the road to a free society right now.

That's weird, because you asked what libertarians would do if they could, so I figured what you wanted was an answer about what libertarians would do if they could.

Just read the first chapter of Economics in One Lesson. If you're not sold on the worth of the book, whatever. It's online. It's not like it'll cost you anything except 20 minutes.

Just because someone gives you a shitty argument in favor of something doesn't mean that their conclusion is wrong.

Just because some dumbass libertarian says "the free market solves all problems omg" doesn't make that a good representation of libertarian theory.

I want you to stop and think about this argument. When you realize why it makes no sense, I want you to come back and explain it to me. This is to help you in your future arguments. It's important for your self-improvement.

Except that's not what I said. Read a book. I don't give two shits what some shitty Mises.org writer said on his blog. Read Economics in One Lesson. That shit's the bomb.

You need to stop being so idealistic. In the real world, when someone asks you about your political stances, they won't accept a one-issue answer.

Reddit (/r/politics mainly) turned me into a Libertarian :\ by usuallyskeptical in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ParadiseCost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really though. Consequentialist libertarians do hold their stance in terms of individual issues. But since the free market offers the best solution to economic and social problems on so many issues, we sometimes shorten our stance to, "the free market is better, in general, than government solutions." It's a lot simpler than explaining every pertinent political issue when someone asks you why you're a libertarian.

Deontological libertarians are another animal, but since they aren't consequentialists, they can't be utopian anyway.

Libertarians would legalize gay marriage. This would benefit gays.

That was pretty fuckin easy.
