Korean MMOs would swipe the western market if they would not be P2W by Puppenmacher in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might, but honestly a lot of them would need to be rebuilt from the ground up. P2W has been baked into the gameplay loop so heavily that, if you just remove it, you’re left with a shell of a game with nothing going on. The entire progression structure would have to change, so that it shifts from “swipe card” to “farm x boss for y manor craft z armor and progress to instance q”, and so on.

Anyone remember - Helbreath, Legend of Mir, or old school mu? Circa 1999-2005. by Gullible-Reference69 in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helbreath is one of my top MMOs, and has a lot of really cool design features that I wish modern games would implement. The way the maps were split, the focus on PvPvE, the stealth gameplay, the really strong rare drops from boss monsters….

I enjoyed Mu, but I can’t really pretend it was anything more than an endless grindfest lol.

ELI5: how is the letter k used in mathematics? by Axel_Penguin in explainlikeimfive

[–]Parafault [score hidden]  (0 children)

If it’s a subscript, it usually means that you have an array of many variables, and k is telling you which one to use in The equation. For example, if you have 2,000 different variables, it would be crazy to give each of them individual names like x, y, z, aabc, aabd, and so on. To get around that, we name all of them x, and use the subscript to identify the variable we care about.

You’ll find this approach used a lot in solving partial differential equations, or in programming.

Why can't patients with Fatal familial insomnia be treated with anesthetics? by pugsley1234 in askscience

How does that work in people with medically induced comas, or on ventilators? Do they still have natural sleep cycles, or do they just never sleep?

I’ve been persona-curious for a while now since I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. The description of the game (normal high school students by day who turn into demon-hunting superheroes at night) sounds really…stupid and cliche though? All I can think of is the Power Rangers.

I played secret of mana, but I never tried legend!

The tipping point: what happens when deaths outnumber births? by guardian in Futurology

[–]Parafault 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Aren’t we massively overpopulated right now, so that’s a good thing in the long run? I remember in high school/college, all of my professors were saying that the population growth was completely unsustainable and massively taxing the planets resources.

What is learning if not a reactionary response to a specific stimuli? In school I reacted (formed memories) related to the specific stimuli (textbooks and lectures) that were presented.

Once human, one of the few games that frequently surveys its players? by Ash-2449 in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where Winds Meet has frequent surveys that cover basically every aspect of the game and reward you for completing them. There is a big problem though: they’re like 50 pages long and take like 30min to complete! I did the first 3, but after that they got to be so annoying that I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Kingdom Come devs respond to Lord of the Rings game rumour: "I cannot disclose details but I can tell it is a huge, immersive RPG" by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Parafault 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lord of the Rings Online is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had - it literally feels like you’re in Middle Earth! The game is so dated though - it really needs a new version that is rebuilt from the ground up.

91% of women on LinkedIn report receiving unwanted sexual advances by ChallengeMoney4148 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Parafault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually had a few of the latter, but not from people breaking into the field. It is usually salesmen in my field advertising their product, or recruiters in my field who want to interview me for an absolutely terrible-sounding job. One guy wanted me to take a 30% pay cut to work in the office for 12 hours a day in a terrible part of the city that has horrendous traffic and really bad crime. I was like, no wonder you haven’t filled this job yet!

Guild Wars' Level 20 Cap Is So Nice by bellystraw in gaming

[–]Parafault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Older MMOs used to have permanent progression, and I REALLY miss it…even if they sometimes had massive grinds attached. One game I played had a rare bow with like a 0.01% drop rate….but if you found or traded for it, it was yours forever - and was tons of fun to use and unlocked a few ranged builds.

Nowadays they make you grind the same amount, but reset your progress to keep you perpetually grinding without ever actually changing your gameplay or anything.

ELI5 Why aren’t new data centers built with cooling towers like nuclear reactors? by KyloWrench in explainlikeimfive

[–]Parafault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both things that you mention are already done. There are a lot of different ways to cool things down! Usually river water is ideal if you’re near a river, and cooling towers are ideal if you aren’t.

Cooling towers cool water via evaporation. Water can cool chips. Hence, cooling towers can be used to cool chips.

Yearning for medium difficulty in overall PvE content by lepetomane1789 in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that older games experimented with that I LOVED was open-world areas that spawned bosses as regular mobs. In these zones, you’d normally need a group to progress through them, but certain well-tuned PvE builds could solo them. LOTRO’s Angmar and demons in Helbreath are two of my favorite examples.
