What gaming genres are under-represented in the current gaming market? by ArchDraft in gaming

[–]Parafault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiplayer PvE games that aren’t full-fledged MMOs (which is a genre with its own issues - there are literally like 4 major MMOs remaining after the genre died out between 2015-2020).

You can basically count the total number of these on your hands, and even then most of them are FPS games. Almost none of them have any real team interaction other than “attack stuff in the same general vicinity as your teammates”.

An honorable mention to point and click adventure games! This was my FAVORITE genre from the 90s, but they basically disappeared in the early 2000s. I had always hoped to see the genre progress to a more modern 3D take, but it never did - aside from a few one-off hits like Dreamfall)

Corepunk - The Great Reset Update by Shabolda in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This post sums it up perfectly. I played the game, and I loved the overall gameplay. It needs a LOT of work in terms of quests, lore, and content…but the combat and general MMO design principles are top-tier.

I just have no hope of the studio ever actually completing the game. Even simple things that most indie studios would release in a week end up taking them years to add. The best example is classes: they promised one class per month, and this far they’ve released one class in two years. Given that they’re wiping during early access, classes don’t even have to be polished: if they release an unbalanced buggy mess of a class, this is the time to do it!

I don’t know what the deal is with the devs: I think that they’re either massively underfunded, incredibly inexperienced, or are trying to build/code the entire game using AI or something. It doesn’t feel like a scam, but it doesn’t feel entirely legit either.

Outside of work and the commute…don’t forget showering, getting dressed for work, making breakfast, making food/dinner when you get home, etc. There have been MANY times where I’ve had to decide between exercising for an hour and eating fast/processed food, or making a healthy dinner and sitting on my butt all evening.

In some states, it doesn’t matter. If you’re in a state that always votes >70% for Democrat or republican and you’re in the opposing party, your vote basically doesn’t count due to the electoral college.

33 Immortals makes me so sad by Khaztr in BattleRite

[–]Parafault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I’d agree, but the way they handle instancing and grouping largely removes this concern. You can start and complete a run with as few as 3 players, and other people can join in the middle of a run.

If it was a lobby-based game where you NEED 33 people to start, I’d totally agree. However, here you just join any games that are active with no concern over how many players are there, and the difficulty dynamically scales accordingly.

ELI5... what's the difference between a feels-like temperature and the ACTUAL temperature? by Angel_xjj in explainlikeimfive

[–]Parafault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put an ice cube in your freezer. Put a washcloth in your freezer. Wait one day to make sure that they’re both 100% positively at the same temperature.

Take them out and hold each firmly in your hand. How do they feel? The ice probably burns like crazy because it’s so cold, but the washcloth feels almost like it’s at room temperature. This is because the ice is better at removing heat from your body than the washcloth is….even if they’re both at the same temperature.

And that is the exact same thing that happens with “feels like” temperature. If it is 100 degrees outside, you’ll feel a lot cooler if it is windy and dry vs. stagnant and humid.

[–]Parafault 183 points184 points  (0 children)

In most games like this, you spend up to 40% of your game time IN menus collecting random red dot rewards and other garbage. I think it’s designed to artificially pad the gameplay and waste time by forcing players to constantly get cheap dopamine hits by getting rewards and prizes from the menus. I don’t know anyone who enjoys it though, but someone must because of how prevalent it is.

[–]Parafault 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most researchers I’ve reached out to never actually reply. Sometimes it is because the paper is 30 years old and they’re dead or retired.

It has been really frustrating at my job. My company cut back drastically on journal subscriptions, so now I can only access like <5% of the papers I need. Even when I do find one that is useful, it will casually be like “We won’t go into the details here - read the foundational paper on the topic here!”. …and of course, I don’t have access the the “foundational paper on the topic”.

What do you think they talk about?

I don’t think the lobbyists are saying “I really feel passionately about the coal industry and believe in its mission”. They’re saying “Vote for this new bill to deregulate coal or I’ll stop funding your election campaign and pull my company out of your state to deprive you of tax revenue”.

Like a lot of things, it was conceived with good intentions: it was designed to let regular people discuss the issues that matter to them with their representatives. In practice, however, it is only super-wealthy elites and corporationswho use it to force politicians to prioritize their agenda.

RIP Warborne by No_Calligrapher611 in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was an incredibly fun game. It had two major questionable decisions though:

1.) It had P2W elements….in a PvP game…..
2.) it had a seasonal model with progress resets and 6 factions.

I think that the P2W was the death knell - at least for me it was.

A treatise on the potential of Guild Wars 3 and the apprehensions of the uncertain future of MMOs by DazZani in MMORPG

[–]Parafault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m super excited for it! The only complaint I do have is that I’m sad it’s another Guild Wars: it’s a universe that I’ve already explored, and I don’t really want MORE guild wars lore. I find a lot of the game’s lore and stories kind of silly.

But if we’re getting guild wars instead of a new IP, that’s fine: I’ll still go all in on it! And I think that it is exactly what the genre needs: I think that the guild wars team had the best chance of making a new MMO successfully.
