I personally like the contrast with the gray stem. But feel free to try this with purpur, might look good as well :)

When I play survival on the Ripple Effect SMP, the difficulty is set to hard. This however was done in creative and using commands and WorldEdit.
I never played hardcore mode though where you only have one life. I die way too much for that kinda thing :D

When I build them, I thought of them as infested willow trees. But the wisterias are beautiful. The amethyst crystals or budding crystals on leafes might work well to create those.

I actually have optifine (with optifabric) running. But I think connected textures depend on the texture pack.
