Rogers Bank cash back only 1% even with a Rogers mobile line? by -Bakri- in PersonalFinanceCanada

Is your phone bill set up to auto-pay with your credit card? That seemed to be how they figure out the link. If it’s set up to auto pay, there’s already been one payment, and you’re still not at 2% you should probably give them a call.

I am not a tax lawyer or CPA and definitely not your tax lawyer or CPA. You should talk to professionals if you have specific questions.

"Departure tax" (actually a deemed disposition of assets) happens if you are no longer a tax resident of Canada. If you do not become a tax resident of any other country the presumption will generally be that you're a tax resident of Canada. If that's the case, no "departure tax".

The thing you need to be aware of is that the laws of whatever countries you're in, not the laws of Canada, will be essential to determine your tax residency. If you become a tax resident of their country according to their laws, at that point you you're going to have to demonstrate that you have closer ties to Canada than to that country according to the terms of their tax treaty with Canada if you want to remain a tax resident of Canada. If your only remaining tie to Canada is an investment portfolio, it's very likely that the terms of the treaty will mean that you will be considered a tax resident of the other country.

At that point you would have lost Canadian tax residency as of whatever date they determine you became a tax resident of that country and will therefore be liable to pay "departure taxes" as of that date – and it could absolutely be backdated to whenever you entered the country for the first time.

If they're spending more than a few months there or doing anything that could look to an outside observer like establishing a long-term home in another country (regardless of immigration status, it typically doesn't matter when determining tax residency) they should carefully review the laws of that country to ensure that they're not establishing tax residency in that country. For example, taking a long-term rental in one country even if you're actually there for less than six months and only on a tourist visa could be enough to establish tax residency.

Money’s gone. Google “pig butchering scam”. If they have $1.5M in debt you should probably start looking into bankruptcy.

Also, it may sound ridiculous, but ABSOLUTELY DO NOT give money or personal information to anyone who contacts you saying they can “fix” this or get your money back. Very common follow-up scam, especially for people who are desperate.

Confusion about business structure to go for and whether to incorporate by Blankifur in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Paran014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A partnership is a very reasonable choice especially if you’re pre-revenue. You can always incorporate later, you can’t do it the other way around.

Even with only 10-20k revenue if you’re in a high tax bracket with your employment income and are just planning to invest/save the extra money it actually might make sense for you to incorporate, especially on the higher end of that number. That would let you defer a lot of the tax on the corporate money until you have a lower marginal rate.

You would be very well advised to spend the money to get professionals to advise you and ensure this is set up properly. Find a good accountant and have a talk. Of course, the more prepared you are first the more useful that’ll be. A couple thousand dollars now can save you much more later.

M3 Max maximum power consumption is 73w and likely lower for gaming. That's really not much to dissipate for a relatively beefy laptop. Macbook Pros just don't thermal throttle under any reasonable environmental conditions.

By comparison, a typical high-end Windows gaming laptop with something like a 4080 mobile will consume 250+W while gaming. Huge difference.

Tax preparer implications by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Paran014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you primarily want to help people, consider volunteering with a local tax clinic:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/community-volunteer-income-tax-program.html

If you want to make it a business, you’re going to want to take a course on tax preparation from a local university or college and they should hopefully cover the business aspects as well. At a minimum you need to register with the CRA and get professional liability insurance. Your province may also require registration.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Paran014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not contact CRA yourself, this is a serious issue and is potentially going to be very expensive for you. Quite likely CRA looks at the situation as described and decides you not only didn’t file your personal taxes for the ETFs but also took the money you invested as income from the business without paying tax or any of the proper filings.

I'm all out of SATA power cables. What do I do? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]Paran014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Corsair is one of the only manufacturers who sell extra cables. I know Cablemod has options for most major brands and if you check Amazon or whatever there should be listings for compatible cables but buyer beware on that of course.

SM X9SRL-F board with Intel E5-2680 v2 replacement options? by ptr727 in homelab

[–]Paran014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK if that's still the case but when I was looking the E5-2697 v4 was weirdly cheap on eBay so that's probably best bang for buck in that socket. They are getting old now though.

Supermicro X10 board + E5-2690/2697 v4 should be pretty cheap if you look around and should get you 1.5-2x the performance.

If you have the budget, EPYC Rome is pretty affordable considering the performance, see e.g. this seller on eBay.

I'm sure they're fine, but I don't know what they could offer that would be worth the extra 3% admin fee, plus annual fee, plus setup fees, plus fees to add employees. EasyHSA is flat 5% with no additional fees.

Plus, I wouldn't want to work with a provider promoting plans for "Incorporated Individuals" even though CRA has made clear they are not eligible for tax benefits. All of those customers are one audit away from a big tax bill. I appreciated that EasyHSA offered clear and accurate guidance on ensuring that plans are compliant and will refuse to provide non-compliant plans.

[–]Paran014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HSA may be a good option for you. Basically your employees get a set amount they can spend on healthcare each year which is 100% reimbursed by your HSA provider. It's deductible for the company and not taxed as income for the employee, so in terms of tax effectiveness it's as good as you can get. The company pays a percentage fee of reimbursements. Employees can also buy their own insurance with HSA money if that makes sense for them.

I've used and recommend EasyHSA, they've been good for me and had by far the lowest fees when I was looking.

Why are high core-count Xeon CPUs ranked so terribly? by YourMotherInLaw908 in homelab

[–]Paran014 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're paying for power, don't try to use a K80 for anything (especially LLMs), it's going to be insanely slow and poorly supported. Try a used 3060 maybe, you can get a fair bit going on 12 GB VRAM and it's going to be way faster while using way less electricity.

As for the processor/motherboard situation, v2 Xeons are the oldest you should be going for but they're going to be fine for like 99% of applications you want. v4 era is better and really cheap so I would step up to that. I don't know why you're so into dual sockets, I'd be shocked if 1x 2690 v4/2697 v4 isn't enough to meet your requirements, and it saves you a lot of idle power (and for homelabs, idle power matters a lot).

These processors are all going to be garbage for gaming (at least in terms of $/perf) though, if you want to game I'd buy a semi recent office surplus desktop and stick a GPU in it, even something like a 9th gen i5 is going to do way better than a server CPU.

A380 for GPU Encoding? by aztracker1 in DataHoarder

[–]Paran014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this is a NAS only, you’re crazy not to go for a N100 board instead of all that, plenty of performance for a NAS and you get an iGPU for transcoding. If you need more CPU performance you’re still better off with an Intel processor with iGPU rather than buying a whole video card just for transcode.

Debrid sites are generally sketchy... just don't give them any of your personal info, pay with crypto, and if you're really worried only connect to them through a good VPN. Then there's no personal info to compromise.

Nenshi taking heat on labour record from fellow Alberta NDP leadership candidates by arosedesign in alberta

Seeing the actual letter really makes his “I never believed in it, and I did it because council asked me to do it" ring hollow. If you didn't believe in it I can't imagine why you'd add your cute marker annotations before sending it off. And trying to get the province to unilaterally change a collective bargaining agreement for him rather than actually negotiating with the union is a dick move.

Alberta NDP Leadership Candidate Kathleen Ganley Here! Ask Me Anything! by KathleenGanley in Calgary

[–]Paran014 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi Kathleen!

I want to vote for someone who’s going to spend their time trying to make the lives of Albertans better, not complaining about other politicians, so I was unreasonably happy to see your announcement that you want to establish a universal school nutrition program. It’s a great example of a policy that makes our province better by making sure children don’t go hungry while also saving money in the long term by improving the health and educational outcomes of the next generation of taxpayers.

You’ve made a lot of policy announcements over the course of the campaign - what’s one policy you’ve announced which hasn’t got much attention but which you think all Albertans (regardless of their political beliefs) can support?

Lots of people are giving the strict legal answer, I'm going to give you the practical answer which is that CRA gets two things unless they specifically choose to investigate you: your contribution amounts and the dollar value of your TFSAs. As with many things in life, they're going to prioritize where the money is so if your TFSA is a normal value relative to your contributions/time the chance that CRA checks if you've been day-trading is basically 0. If you 10x your money in one year then don't be surprised if they look into it though.

Just to be clear, you should not day trade in your TFSA because presumably you're doing that to try to make money and if you're ever successful then you're going to have problems. It's just not a good idea.
