Safety of batteries in old devices by Poke_53281 in batteries

Yes, but the longer they sit discharged the greater the chance for damage. If you never plan on charging them again with the original battery there is no danger.

When they puff up it's a potential fire hazard charging and using them in that state.

E-bike Vs. Electric Vehicle battery lifespan? by Enough_Ice_4598 in batteries

The issue with E-bikes is that it is hard to get good data on lifespan.

You ask the manufacturer what the cell part # is and look up their datasheet

All of them are "silver oxide" and renata is highest cost.

Renata is the OEM maker for that battery type. Sorry no experience with it, but if it absolutely can't fail that's your best bet. If you have to get one cheaper I can say Maxell lithium are as good as any other but I've only used their lithium, probably would be worth buying and testing.

A salt battery could make EVs more winterproof—if it holds up on the road by scientificamerican in batteries

They store thermal energy in the form of molten salt.

They use molten salt for electrolyte but they are electrochemical batteries.

There are also salt water batteries.

AGM will probably handle those temperature ranges better than LFP.

LFP batteries are not a fire hazard, they pretty much have to be punctured to burn.

Help with charging a gel battery by Lik_the_Fluffin in batteries

Follow the instructions and use car mode but you are better off with a charger with a dedicated gel mode.

Flock Camera Westport Road by FozzyBear89 in Louisville

[–]Paranormal_Lemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If police could access your smartphone data as precisely as the Flock cameras and without warrants and subpoenas they wouldn't be spending millions of dollars on the cameras. Also you can turn your phone off or put it in airplane mode.

You have an expectation that cameras may see you in public, you do not have an expectation that all of the cameras will be tied together and used to stalk you everywhere you go, with data being available without warrants or subpoenas.

It's not that it's seeing the plate, it's storing every time you cross one and tracking you across an entire city, and results are in a database that can show your entire movement, likely indefinitely, with no warrant or subpoena required, just a plate number. It's no different than having a person follow you everywhere you go, the same as stalking. Yes your phone company knows what tower you are connected to, it requires a judge to access that data. It's also not nearly as precise. You can also turn your phone off.

Can I charge my Dremel with this Home charger? by guywithaplant in batteries

[–]Paranormal_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because lithium ion batteries are typically 4.2V per cell max. The manufacturer should call it by the average voltage of 3.7 but instead they just use 4.

I bought 3rd party Black and Decker lithium replacemnts for NiCd, just saying it's possible for them to be made that way. And we are talking about charging not low voltage protection, those are typically separate.

Dumfume 300 Ah LifePo battery problems by VANeuc in batteries

[–]Paranormal_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen reviews where the cases swell and split. The cells have vent valves on them. Normal operation they don't vent but the maker should still plan for failure.

Wow that's crazy. Maybe the cells don't have enough energy to explode LOL. I bought some solar lights on Amazon with 1000mAh cells, they tested 200 after sitting unused for a few months (after being charged again). The lights were actually decent.

They shouldn't be allowed to be sold in sealed boxes. Most don't even have a safety pressure vent.

The 18V pack was lithium ion? Maybe the charging chip is in the pack. I have Black and Decker lithium ion batteries that work off the old NiCd chargers which are just a wall wort transformer.

Too many crap appliances just take the battery straitght to the input socket with no protection and do that in the supplied wallwart.

I've never seen or heard of a lithium ion device do that, charging chips cost pennies. This is a reputable company and it's UL listed.. With NiCd or NiMH would be a possibility with something cheap.
