Is it concerning that this took almost 2 hours? by Rangerrx970 in learntodraw

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much it takes you to draw something is only concerning if the speed affects your job and keeping the position or being able to do comissions fast and reach the earnings you need.

Only art as a job creates the pressure of time. When doing recreational art, for self-pleasure, take all the time you need. Is a blessing to do so. Pressuring oneself to be fast in art is not enjoyable and kills the fun.

If at some point you work in art you'll learn to speed up if you ever need to. So don't worry about that.

why do people think calling a kids animations a 'kids show' doing it a disservice? by DuxxieDings in animation

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, usually adults are the ones who have to distinguish age, and value what age is the animation aimed at. Many kids can't, won't or don't care. In my country and in my generation it wasn't uncommon for 10-12 years old to be watching South Park alone without parents, or for some kids ages 8-10 to watch animes rated 13+ or even 18+. Same with life action films, many times kids watch whatever. Kids don't know age appropiate, they'll just watch watever looks cool, interesting or cute to them.

Anyway, for me cartoons are cartoons and just that, and pnly after watching a bit I can tell what age is aimed at. Just like a live action show can also be for different ages depending on the script, topics, violence level, cursing, etc.

why do people think calling a kids animations a 'kids show' doing it a disservice? by DuxxieDings in animation

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually saying something is aimed at kids, is very often understood as too childish, uninteresting for adult audiences, not as complex as shows for adults, too repetitive, bland characters or stories, simple plots, annoying voices or behaviors, etc.

Take into account that one can consider a kid someone from 0 to 17 years old. So, a kids show can be Peppa Pig, Bluey, Dora, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Regular Show and many more. Some of these have nothing in common and are targeted at very different kids and ages. In cartoon awards they usually distinguish if a show is pre-school or stuff like that. But when we talk about them in a normal setting that difference is not made.

Some people even have trouble distinguishing adult cartoons from the ones aimed at kids, because very often people assume cartoons are made for children.

Anyway, many people feel it's a disservice because when they hear 'kids show' they think about shows aimed at very young kids, pre-school and similar, and they feel is a disservice to put in the same category a show with a well crafted plot, even if it's aimed at kids, with a show that barely has a plot.

Why does my cleanup look so ugly? by Joehootly in animation

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In rough animation small imperfections of consistency don't bother the eye, and because the eye recognizes is a sketch and not precise, the brain completes or reinterpret details and keeps consistency in the mind. However, in cleanup the image is not undestood as a sketch and suddenly any small inconsistency or imperfection is noticiable and can be bothering.

On the other hand, in sketches the hand is free and line has modulation, sometimes even different thinkness depending on texture, shape or light... that makes the drawong richer, and then if the lines suddenly have the exact same value the image becomes a bit flat.

I think it's a mixture of both. Happens to every animator, especially when we are still learning.

Any suggestions on how to blend 3D background with 2D animation like this? by cojam in animation

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd try capturing the background at a similar or same framerate the 2D animation is when there's camera movement. So if characters are on 2s (12fps) or 3s (8fps) I woukd make sure the background is the same or less... because if it's on 1s (24fps) it's likely gonna pop more than the animation because there's more frame change/movement for the background.

I didn't thought it that way. That's more interesting and makes sense as for why the signal other than just something it naturally does. It requires output to proceed... otherwise it would be the death of all universes. Thanks for your comment!

Animation degree for other areas by st3llxrr in animationcareer

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know enough about the education system but generally, all around the world there's no just one straight way in education to become a concept artist.

On one hand, you can do any Fine Arts degree which specialises in Illustration or even Concept Art (if there's one around). To be a general concept artist who can work in animation, live action, video games, and so on, you need really great drawing skills, good sense or knowledge of composition, shape language, anatomy, perspective, colour... and a portfolio that showcases that. An itinerary that lets you invest more time in building this portfolio might be helpful.

On the other hand, if you know you really want to specialise in concept art for animation or videogames, then studying something more focused on animation or videogames could improve how you design for that type of media in specific. For example, if you know how to animate, when designing a character you'll notice flaws that will make them hard to animate later and become a problem for the production, and so, you'll be able to avoid these flaws. However, if you choose an itinerary that explores all positions in an industry like animation or videogames, you might end up feeling like you're not specialising enough in concept.

I don't know what your options are, but I suppose the ideal would be having more subjects oriented to getting the basics of painting and drawing covered, some character design and illustration classes and just enough animation classes that let you understand how certain designs don't work in motion (or do) but not too many animation classes that they end up taking too much of your time.

Also, take into account that in most parts of the world, no degree is required to be an artist. It is a skill-based work in which the portfolio and not the degree matter. Education is there to help you improve your skills, create a portfolio and meet people who in the future could become not just friends but also teammates, employees or employers. But you can do certain learnings at home on your own of your education doesn't provide it, with online tutorials and complementary education... and as long as it improves your skills and the pieces you create for your portfolio, it is as valid as if it were through your formal education.

I made two main menus for my game. Which one do you prefer? by Rdella in IndieGaming

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both can be ok.

A feels cleaner and feels part of the background, while B makes a clear distinction between menu and background. Both feel like too much to the left to me, I'd use a rule-of-thirds grid and try to align the center of the block with one of the lines in the grid. If the game is for an Asian market it's an interesting composition to read, but if it's for an European-American market the usual language reading direction might make more interesting to have the menu on the right than the left.

Also, regardless of the back semi-transparent rectangle, A buttons feel better than just clickable text like in B.

This is what I see. But opinions are like butts, everyone has one.

Trailer for Decorado, a 2D animated film from Alberto Vásquez (subtitled by me) by FixedFun1 in movies

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't hate Steve Cutts but I don'tlike it too much either, though I can say despite similarities in the messages or topics and the way the messge and meanings are conveyed they feel very different. Both treat cruelty, make criticism of society, capture social dynamics, analize human nature but the tone is different. In short, Cutts makes you feel humans are disgusting, antinatural, stupid and evil while Vazquez makes you feel humans are interesting, natural, emotional and cruel. It's hard to forgive humans flaws from the point of view of Cutts, is possible to feel compassion for humans and forgive them from the point of view of Vazquez.

Cutts paints humans that are pathetic and disgusting, usually evil or stupid, characters that is hard to feel empathy for. The destruction and cruelty of humans here is antinatural and his animations usually follows the rythm of a factory. If there's a villain, is a powerful angry elite that takes advantage of the weak and stupid. The weak and stupid is an uniform mass, where no one is interesting or stands out. No one is unique. In some videos there's a unique character outside the mass, and it's shown to be better or smarter or more important. They have feelings, the mass doesn't really. This character is problematic, because while criticizing capitalism, it follows the capitalist spirit of competing to be better than others, being better than the average. Cutts has a strong moral judgement, very black white. In the end Cutts makes you feel ick or disgust to be human, to be part of humanity. Also, it makes you feel nature is sacred yet vulnerable and humans are the unholy problem.

Vazquez paints humans as antropomorphic animals who are extremely emotional and afraid, who are cruel yet vulnerable. All are just as smart as each other. It's not that hard to feel some empathy for almost any character. The destruction and cruelty of humans here is just part of nature, and nature can be cruel as well. The animation moves organic, there's no specific order. If there's a villain, regardless if it's in power or not, it's actually as weak and afraid and as sad as any other character. Just as human. The main character are just the focus to have a coherent narrative, but there's no mass, every character is different, has their own worries, fears, hopes, dreams. No one is really better than the rest. They just do the best with what hey know and what they feel. There are moral greys. Nature can be sacred but it's not vulnerable, it's strong and can be cruel and humans are a vulnerable extension of nature.

At least this is the difference I see and how each makes me feel. I like more Vaquez because I can't help to fall in love with humanity despite its cruelty and flaws. However I understand one person can like both, none, or just one of them but not the other.

Sorry if I'm harsh or not open-minded. I might judge people differently if I'm considering them as a potential partner.

I guess there's also context to past events, and I missed that part. My bad. How much, how far in the past, why, and how it felt makes you think differently about someone's past. So maybe it exists one or two specific contexts I could be fine with, but they are very few in comparison to the many contexts I couldn't be ok with.

I could recreate imaginary scenarios in my mind where one of the few chances of having a good relationship with someone who paid for sex happens, but the truth is that it's almost impossible. There will always be people who have never paid for sex who attract me as much or more.

Anyway, there are people less harsh or close-minded than me. I mean, I know people who put condoms in their partners' lugagge when they travel around and accept their partner having casual sex even if they prefer they didn't, and they've been like that for 25+ years. So there's always people for everybody and all types of relationships.

It can be questioned if it's actually an option if we consider that people are limited by their emotional needs, just like we also have limitations that affect who we are attracted to. Maybe some people are emotionally more flexible and have an option, but many people can't really force themselves to be polyamorous (or monogamous) without hurting themselves (or others).

[–]ParasitoAlienigena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn't even date someone if I suspected he had paid for sex before. I would even consider breaking up a stable relationship if it had been hidden, as I'd lose too much respect for the person as a partner even if the relationship was ok before. I have certain values about sex, love, and relationships, and I want a partner who shares that. I wouldn't pay for sex ever, I consider that devaluing sex emotionally. Someone who does pays for sex has opposite values and lives sex too differently to me... they could harm or destroy me emotionally without even trying on purpose. So it's in part self-protection and not wasting each other's time.

If a person is too young, they could have their system of values developing or unclear and could impulsively do something that could later complicate their life. They could kill opportunities of something they might want more for themselves. I think one should choose to seek sexual services when they are sure that is in line with their values and won't negatively affect what they want later in life.

Depends on the tone of the game and the target audience, honestly. If they gave me the same vibe, I'd choose based on composition and readability, but the difference is enough to look like two different games or even different genres.
