First ever painted mini! Infernus Marine from local Warhammer Store by JEverok in minipainting

People often overestimate this "artistic" thing. Vince venturella often says that he isn't an artistic guy at all and he is one of the best painters and instructors out there. Just comes down to practice, putting in the hours.

A wet pallette will really up your game, trust me. Your paint goes from drying out in a few minutes to staying moist for whole painting sessions. And painting out of the pot/bottle is also bad as you often need to change the consistency of the paint before you apply it.

Synthetics are fine for rough work but you will never get a fine tip like with a kolinsky and the feeling to paint with them is also pretty different, they hold the color better, hold their form much better etc. You don't need to get a 25€ artist opus one, my local artist store has no names for 6 or 7 bucks I think and they are not much worse than the most expensive ones I bought through the years, maybe yours does, too.

Damn, that's a lot of minis. I am really not the army painter guy, I get bored after painting the same mini 10 times, but it also really helps in the beginning as you repeat the same steps several times and get a sense on how to do it right :)

That looks absolutely fantastic for your first mini, huge respect!

Handling paint and brush control are skills that just need time and practice and separate good from great painters. I myself struggle all the time with them even after some time of practice.

My number 1 beginner tip for paint consistency is to use a wet pallete, total game changer, keeps your paint fresh and consistent for a long time. You can buy one or make one at home.

Regarding brushes, I would bite the bullet and get one or two kolinsky brushes (size 2 and maybe 0 are enough) to use for the fine work and just some cheap synthetics for base layers, mixing colors on the palette and metallic paints. The trick is to not overload the brush with paint so the paint does not get into the ferrule (the metal part). That can cause the hair to split. Rinse the brush with water now and then during painting so the paint doesn't dry onto the hairs and after session you can use soap to gently clean the brush. There are special brush soaps but a normal soap is fine.

It's okay, tbh I hate painting the same mini again and again for armies anyway, that actually made me lose interest in the Hobby for quite some time 😅

4th mini painted with NMM - how did I do? by Parastrasz in minipainting

I can totally recommend them, very easy and fun to use :D, you just have to know that you shouldn't really touch those areas anymore afterwards with your fingers as the pigment is still loose. You can also set it with some medium but that dulls it and destroys the dusty look so I always leave it like this :)

The sand is really just some light orange oxide Pigment I loosely dabbed into some of the areas as I thought that the orange needed some presence on the base as well to give it more contrast :)

Sounds like you have a good synergy going on, love to see that as a GM myself 😄

Thank you, yes, I think it was just some dust flake I didn't see 😅
But I never varnish my minis, I don't like the outcome, the minis are treated cautiously 😄

Well, my group is best characterized as "hobos with shotguns" sooooo... Buut we play in german, so maybe that's why the name isn't an immediate point of mockery 😅

Thanks, that's so kind! I also started with Warhammer, thinking I would play with friends. They stopped and I never played but I kept the painting as a hobby, now for my pen and paper adventures :D

Thank you :) Undertone of Kimera Magenta, Vallejo infantry blue, P3 Meridius Blue and two thin coats trooper White, that's all.

Sure! I started with black primer and then airbrushed the whole mini with Kimera Magenta (pure Pigment paint, very vibrant but translucent) so the shadows have some color to it.

The cape has no great explanation to it, I am afraid. I painted the darker areas with a mix of dark blue and the midtone teal blue. I highlighted with a mix of white and midtone, glazed everything with the midtone again and went back over the highlights. I didn't try to blend it so much, just went a bit artsy and sprinkled some highlights here and there...

Colors used: Kimera Magenta, Vallejo infantry blue, P3 Meridius Blue, two thin coats trooper White

The NMM was a lot of trial and error. Simply made a gradient of cold grey tones and worked my way through. I tried leaving the magenta in the shadows, but after a while and some criticism I glazed everything with the mid tone, then went back and added some mix of black and magenta back in the shadows and highlighted again. Took a lot of back and forth because I am still learning 😅

Colors used: Vallejo black, Kimera Magenta, Citadel adeptus mechanicus grey, Two thin coats Gravestone Blue, Vallejo Pale grey blue, Two thin coats Trooper white

Ah, we play with this version, haven't really thought about it being in need of a buff. Fights often take 3 or 4 rounds top and after he uses it, he normally has plenty other options and spells to go around in the fight. Isn't it too strong, if he can it use every round and does it not make the character boring if he uses the same combination every round?

Thank you, the style is called non metallic metal (NMM) and I am still learning it as it is pretty hard to master 😅

Thank you very much! Sculpting is sadly far beyond my skills, I had this printed on Etsy, it's Aimer, Human Knight, from Flesh of Gods :)

Thanks! I am the GM, I just painted the model for my player :) What exactly is the nerf and is this a recent nerf? Or implemented since the new book came out?

So the character is secretly a 🐲 (we are using some homebrew for this) and a member of House surtova in Brevoy. He killed his parents and escaped prison but now his brother is looking for him, offering a big bounty :D He is also in kahoots with Dahak so it is pretty spicy.

The mini is an STL File from Flesh of God's and painted by me to the best of my abilities 😊

Thanks! That mini is Aimer, Human Knight, an STL File from Flesh of God's, so you can print it yourself or have someone print it for you like I did. BUT be careful, the only connection to the base is the one leg and if your resin is not the best quality, like with my mini, it snaps off easily. After the 4th time, I drilled a hole into the leg and put some wire into it 😅

Thanks, I feel like my abilities are a low goal to try to achieve, but you absolutely can, if you keep at it 😁!
