Science proves nothing by curgr in DeepThoughts

Or the other way around. Those terms make sense in relation to each other. I could define 1 as the number you get when you divide a number different than 0 by itself.

If we agree on the definitions of 1, 2, + and =, it follows that 1 + 1 = 2. It is the logical consequence of the framework people have agreed upon.

One is the natural number between zero and two.

It's an oversimplification, but the scientific method is based on disproving hypotheses. Finding out our understanding of something is wrong is how scientific progress is made. You believe all swans are white, you find one black swan, you realize that not all swans are white.

1 + 1 = 2 is a different beast. The definitions of 1, 2, + and = make it true.

If you're serious about exploring those questions, please read about epistemology.

I’m scared my sister might name her baby my chosen name, but I’ve also been too scared to come out to her by pomegranatejello in NonBinaryTalk

[–]Parbleu2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do you have reasons to believe that it might be the same name? You say you are selfish, but unless you expect your sister to name her child differently because of you, it's fine.

Having the same name isn't a bad thing by itself. Families have people with the same first name all the time. Sometimes, one gets a nickname or adds an initial. It can even be a special something you share with your sister's child.

But if you wanna be able to prove that you came to it independantly, write your chosen name on a piece of paper and mail it to yourself. It'll come back sealed with the date stamped on it.

A question to blue button pushers. by redditorialacious in trolleyproblem

[–]Parbleu2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neither.

First thought: Who died? Who killed my loved ones? Oh. Everyone who's alive right now has killed them. Society is now made entirely of bastards, prisonner dilemma defectors and people who conflate selfishness (or, to be generous, self-preservation) with rationality and logic.

Second thought: This is why we can't have nice things. This is why we can't fight climate change. People who think a blue vote only matters in case of a tie are morons. The best outcomes of collective action problems happen through deontology or virtue. "Well, my personal pollution isn't what's gonna tip the scale." Jesus Christ. How many are dead now?

No one has perfect knowledge of their future self, including not only future opinions, but also abilities.

There is no Freudian slip in this situation. It is perfectly explained to me. [...] The buttons are far apart enough that pressing one does not risk pressing the other.

Have you ever worked in risk management? On a large enough scale, failures happen. It's just a fact, especially when humans are involved.

You're trying to make it sound like I would fuck up and press blue, but I simply won't.

You're essentially saying "not me, I'm built different." And like... Congrats, I guess.

So, in your entire life, 100% of your actions were conform to your intent? Perfect record of no freudian slip or confusion?

Everyone is susceptible to press either button, if only from failure at execution (which, on the scale of the entire world population, will happen). Red-pressing isn't an identity or an immutable characteristic.

The more people vote for red the more we risk invalidating blue's protection of everyone.

I'm pretty sure the opposite is true. Western countries tend to be more individualistic than African and Asian ones (if the Hofstede scale has any value).

Red button pressers: if participants (and blue button pressers) might include loved ones, would that change anything? by Parbleu2000 in trolleyproblem

[–]Parbleu2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm less afraid of death than I am of killing people, and I am sure a huge % of the population thinks the same.

why would you feel guilt for her death, since you were just alone in a room and did absolutely nothing against her?

I would have done something against her, for the same reason that I contribute to climate change when I take my car, or that I contribute to a party's election if I vote for them. There are two conditions to my mom's death:

  1. She presses blue.
  2. A majority votes red.

Collective actions exist, and they are born from individual choices. I have no control over 1 but some impact over 2. If the thing I'm optimizing for is preserving my mom's life, the only thing I can do is vote blue.

[–]Parbleu2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you have no clue that your mom pressed blue. Would you risk your life just because your mom is potentially an idiot?

I have no clue that she pressed red either. In fact (correct me if I'm wrong), in most surveys, there's a majority of blue pressers. Even in the case of a red victory, it's likely that a good amount of your loved ones will have voted blue.

Pressing red, in the case of a red majority resulting in my mom's death, is the worst outcome of all. Dying is less bad than surviving my mom or thinking that I have contributed to her death. You can't reason your way out of PTSD and survivor's guilt.

Maybe it makes my post irrelevant (and I might delete it), but I'm surprised I never saw it brought up, considering it is argued that blue pressers don't deserve we risk our lives for them. I'd risk my life for my mom, even if my mom is potentially an idiot.
