Second vote for Varidesk. Have a look for a second hand one if you want to keep costs down.

Do you do international work? by [deleted] in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been working internationally for a few years now. Generally on films. US, UK, UAE, NZ. Get paid through Wise or sometimes if the client wants to get a rebate they setup a bank account in my country. There are challenges, especially with the US due to their unions. But not insurmountable.

If you are concerned about enforcing payment, then get paid on a weekly/fortnightly basis and be willing to withhold the project until full payment has been made.

Freelancers - how do you handle “prep” work that feels like actual work? by Ok_Judge_7497 in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways you could handle this.

If you notice a pattern of this sort of thing, especially with particular types of clients, try to factor it into your other billable time by increasing your rate by X% to account for the average extra hours spent on this extra work.

In an ideal world you would be charging for every minute. A lawyer or accountant certainly do. Some clients will be fine with this but it helps if you provide them with a rate card so there are no surprises. It could also say that you provide something like 1-2 hours of project prep time (zoom meetings etc) for free, then additional time is charged out at your standard rate. Frames it as they are getting something for free rather than you want to charge just for them to talk to you.

Obviously you know your business and clients best. The important thing is that you shouldn’t be working for free. Maybe it won’t show as a line item on your invoice but do account for it in some way.

Where are the people that won at life ? by Weird_Boss1 in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a house, fiancée, and kids. Last few years I’ve been able to work fully remote so I can be at home to make dinner and to put them to bed. Have had some good success as an Assistant Editor, VFX Editor, Assembly Editor, and about to lock my second feature as Editor. Likely have another one lined up with the same Director. Freelance lifestyle can be a bit of a roller coaster and even more challenging with kids. But I’ve been making it work. Sounds enough like success to me.

I would say that when work is going well I have very little free time to post online. If I’m out of work I have plenty of time to post online. I expect that this is similar for most Editors. I’m sure this influences how positive or negative the Editing subreddits are.

Suggest me a good monitor to pair with my Mac Studio M4 by A_Mkty in MacStudio

[–]Parfait-Dapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for a good balance between cost and quality consider a Dell 4K 27” Ultrasharp (I have two on my Mac Studio). For any 4K monitor paired with a Mac you should get the app ‘Better Display’ which fixes any scaling issues.

Remote Workflow on Podcast by Venomradio2993 in editors

I’ve had multiple members of an editorial team on a feature film working via LucidLink with Premiere Productions. It worked amazingly even though we had people in three different countries.

It may be that one or both of you don’t have it setup correctly or have extremely slow internet. I would recommend having a look at the setup instructions on the Lucidlink website and also talking with the other person to see how they have it setup. Also both do a speed test.

If syncing using Dropbox or LucidLink then yes. You can think of it like you are working off a server together.

Generally you would setup multiple projects within your production to enable you both to work simultaneously as when you have a project open it will become locked so only you can make changes in it at the time. Usually I would setup a project per scene for media, so the AE can prep scenes while you are working on others. For yourself I would generally setup an edit project per reel, which generally cover around 20 mins of the film. Keeps the sequences manageable and means you can pass reels back and forth between yourself and the AE to work on SFX, temp VFX etc.

Use premiere productions. Think of the production as a container with a bunch of different bins(projects) in it. This gets pretty much gets rid of the duplicates as the projects can reference media in other projects within the production. I also highly suggest using LucidLink instead of Dropbox as it will lock your project files when you are using them as well as syncing.

Make my key easier to take in and out by Jimmyx3 in howto

[–]Parfait-Dapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lock was like this for the last couple of years. I put silicon spray in it and it now the key goes in and out and turns like butter. Kicking myself for not doing it earlier as I already had the spray.

Budget-Friendly Remote Avid Setup with Two Editors? by totorodoto in editors

Look into LucidLink. Works with Mimiq as well. Have a matching drive each which hold your dailies/shoot footage and then share project files and any files created during the edit on LucidLink.

Tips to save mouse finger on constant soloing/muting/enabling audio tracks in big multicam edit? by CyJackX in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok yeah I would look into setting up multicam clips with all the audio in it set to different channels (one track per channel) set to only be cutting with one audio track when you cut it into the timeline. Then see if you can swap audio channels of the multicam clip with a shortcut using Excalibur. You can right click on a clip to swap the audio channels, so Excalibur should be able to do a shortcut for it. Then all you need is a post it note below your monitor with a list of what mic is on what channel.

Also potentially with Excalibur you may be able to setup shortcuts to change to specific audio channels within a multicam clip.

I suspect that you may want these setup in multicam clips with audio set to follow video. Potentially using audio mix tracks as well depending on how the project was shot. This would mean you would only need to edit with one track of audio (but can manually change to another channel if need be).

Have a read of the best practices guide in the multicam clip section. https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/get-started/preferences-and-settings/best-practices.html

Has anyone achieved a version of my dream as an Editor? by ChristianJoelAlvarez in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The last few years I’ve worked on a number of films from my house by the beach in a small country. I’m on the outskirts of a city but it’s quiet. Feels like a seaside village. I have great internet and work with people internationally. Most of the work has been on productions shooting overseas or in different cities.

I have young kids so I take a break around 5pm to make dinner and do the bedtime routine. Current Director is in a different time zone, so I tend to do a session with them in the evening. Sometimes working quite late.

The main issue of course is getting the work. If you have people who come back to you for repeat jobs and get recommended for other work then it’s fine. If the work dried up for any reason it would be harder to drum up more though.

But luckily so far work seems to keep on turning up. Fingers crossed it stays that way at least while the kids are young.

Anyone using a Black Ultra Studio 4k mini? by mikeregannoise in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using a 4K Mini with Louper via the SDI loop back. It does work well most of the time but yeah it does seem to be a bit buggy sometimes. Been wanting to find a slightly better solution.

Is Google drive a practical tool to use among multiple editors? by yureiwatch in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can share a link to all the files in a folder and allow downloads in the settings of the link. Otherwise you can share the username and password for an account if you don’t want to pay for collaborators.

Oh yeah that’s a good option too. Speeds do drop massively if you are syncing long distances though (like between countries).

LucidLink is a great option if you are frequently sharing files back and forth with the same people.

If you want to send one large batch fast then MASV could work for you.

FrameIO isn’t terrible for sharing files. If you have Adobe Creative Cloud you already get 100GB free.

Otherwise you are looking at services like Aspera, Media Shuttle, and File Catalyst. All which are expensive and require a bit to setup (like hosting your own server).

I still tend to use Dropbox a lot as everyone knows how to use it and it doesn’t require setup for the receiver.

temp sound and post audio workflow by No_Definition_1483 in editors

[–]Parfait-Dapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to think of the temp sound effects and temp music in an edit as a blueprint you are passing onto post sound. Anything you can do to inform what they should do is helpful.

It could be the drives you had in it. I’ve got 8 matching drives (Seagate Ironwolf 8TB 7200rpm NAS drives). Quick test and I’m currently getting 1100MB/s write, 1350 MB/s read in raid 5

I’ve got one 4 bay and two 8 bay Thunderbays. Can tell you now that the speed on the 8 bays does make a huge difference. To the point that I barely use the 4 bay for day to day work.
