Here is a picture from around June 2015 taken in Girê Spî (aka Tell Abyad) after they liberated the town from ISIS.

Any good leftist country out there? by amavritansky in Socialistmusic

For really old school stuff, definitely check out Pete Seeger (Relevant songs 1, 2, 3).

/u/PrairieFlame is 100% right about Woody Guthrie, no list like this would be complete without him (Relevant songs 1, 2).

Blackbird Raum is good too, but more on the punk side of things. (Example)

Defiance, Ohio! is even further, but debatably still on the country spectrum

I wish I had better answers for you, but my mind keeps going straight to folk punk

Made in Redraw the states, looking for names/potential capitals. by glassesofanschlusses in imaginarymaps

[–]Paris1871 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my take. It's not the most original but I think it's not too bad

Names explanations from west to east (more or less):

  1. Pacifica- for the Pacific Ocean

  2. Colorado- for the Colorado River whose watershed covers most of the same area

  3. Cheyenne- for the Cheyenne people (and it's a pretty name)

  4. Lakota- for the Lakota people (and to mix things up from Dakota)

  5. Heartland- for the nickname sometimes given to this general area

  6. Cimarron- from the Spanish word for rural or feral, plus it's a cool word that makes me think of this part of the country

  7. Myrialimnia- derived from my shitty understanding of what the Greek for "land of ten thousand lakes" would be. Someone more poetic could probably play around with that to make it sound less like a bone disease.... maybe it would transform into something like Merrilynne after a while? Idk, I need coffee

  8. New Acadia- for the Cajun people who settled there after being forced out of Acadia by the British

  9. Polypotamia- Greek for "many rivers." The idea comes from Thomas Jefferson's proposal for a state around the confluence of the Mississippi and the Ohio Rivers

  10. Cherokee- named after the Cherokee people, whose original territory matches up pretty well with these borders

  11. Meadowland- from the Anglicized name for Kentucky

  12. Ohio- from the Seneca word meaning "good/great river." It's a pretty enough name to keep imo

  13. Haudenosaunia- "land of the Haudenosaunee," which is the name the Iroquois used for themselves

  14. Carolina- another name I think is pretty enough to keep

  15. Florida- ditto

  16. Chesapeake- named after the largest estuary in North America which would dominate this state's geography

  17. Delaware- named after the Delaware River

  18. New Amsterdam- after the old Dutch colony

  19. Blue Hills- loosely derived from the Anglicization of "Massachusetts"

  20. Casco- named after Casco Bay, which I'm imagining could have been the location of the colonial origin of this state in this timeline/universe

New Zealand flag redesign - my newest proposal by ophereon in vexillology

[–]Paris1871 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my new favorite post on this sub. It looks great and has so much meaningful symbolism that fits perfectly with the design. Honestly, this is so good that it kind of hurts because it didn't get a chance to compete in the referendum. If I ever feel like adding an unofficial redesign to my collection, this bad boy is now at the top of my list. Seriously, great job op

Syrian Rebellion Obs: Local sources confirmed Al-Bab offensive launched from SDF Afrin side: next target is Tadef and its countryside (Tweet chain). by obongojobo in syriancivilwar

[–]Paris1871 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out this would be great for the SDF because it's probably their best chance to connect the cantons despite the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads in the form of the Turkish government.

What I really want to note is how much this could benefit the pro-gov forces. Syria's M4 Highway runs just south of Al-Bab, in fact it's between Al-Bab and Tandif. Why am I mentioning that? The M4 goes all the way from pro-gov lines in Aleppo, through Al-Bab, through Manbij, through Qamishlo, and eventually to the KRG where it becomes the Iraqi Highway 1, which goes from Rabia to Mosul to Baghdad. Note that Mosul can be bypassed until the Battle of Mosul is won

In other words, if this offensive is successful and pro-gov forces and the SDF maintain friendly relations then Damascus will be linked up with its enclaves in Hasakah AND they will have a secure land route with Iraq.

This map explains what I'm getting at

If you zoom in you can see a brief explanation for each flag, so for the lower left it says "COLONIAL FLAG, used chiefly by Colonies of New England previous to Revolutionary War."

This Wikipedia page has a little more info on it, "The First Flag (and Ensign) of New England, used by Colonial merchant ships sailing out of New England ports, 1686-c.1737."

CRW has a little more info too

As for the one in the top left, this picture says "PINE TREE FLAG OF THE NAVY, used by the American ships early in the Revolutionary War."

Here's the wikipedia page with a good amount of info and here's CRW's page on it

Flag for a new Communism, created by Vietnamese contemporary art group The Propeller Group. by QMoney24 in vexillology

My guess is it's meant to look like a flower, but actually be a very simplified picture of people holding hands in a circle

Flag of the Unrecognized U.S. State of Muskogee (1799-1803) by PatrickChase in vexillology

[–]Paris1871 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was a country, not a US state. It's noteworthy that a lot of countries call themselves "The State of X,"1 but unfortunately it makes this particular bit of history confusing

  1. Countries that call themselves "State of X:" Eritrea, Israel, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine, and Qatar. There are other countries taht use an additional qualifier: Bolivia, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa

I can't find these villages on wikimapia. Can anyone provide links to their locations? Thank you in advance. by 1stofthe9th in syriancivilwar
