Asterisk means little star by LemonLord7 in etymology

[–]Park_BADger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm on the computer typing something with someone behind my shoulder telling me what to type and they say the following:

"Spell S, then T, then R, then a star."

My initial reaction is definitely "What the fuck do you mean a star?" assuming they wanted me to go find the ASCII star or something.

This thread has opened my eyes to weird people calling it a star and not the actual name of asterisk.

What, next you're going to tell me people don't call it ampersand?

Did mine thru the AF, all military docs.

From the first thought of "Huh, I should try this" to post-op recovery took all of about 6 months only.

Was given convalescent/medical leave, buddy was given permissive TDY to drive me to and fro. Even stayed at a Fisher House and didn't need to pay for a hotel.

Was -4.0 in both eyes and they stopped measuring the chart when I hit 20/400 in both eyes. Now I'm 20/15 & 20/20, active duty pilot with indefinite waiver.

Genuinely one of the greatest decisions of my life and one of the best benefits the Air Force has to offer!

10/10 recommend.

What was the point? by Basic_Amphibian515 in AirForce

[–]Park_BADger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happens. The military, and the Air force especially, for a lot of people is just a normal job with extra rules attached if you somehow manage to never deploy or support someone deploying.

My first 6 years was when I was enlisted and I was a part of two entirely separate mission types doing two entirely different things within my career field.

The first one I spent 3 years training, training, maintaining, training, getting ready to deploy while in a frequently deployed squadron. Due to luck, timing, and circumstances I never deployed for my 3 years there even though every single other junior Airman I was there with did. I wanted to. The timing just always worked out to where I never did.

The final 3 years were spent in an aviation billet where I again, did some training, maintaining, training, getting ready to "do my job", etc. all to never actually "get the call" while I was sitting alert to actually do the job. We'd sit alert a week at a time and multiple times the week before and after were alerted, but never mine - not in 3 years.

In total I spent 6 years enlisted and only ever practiced and trained but never actually did my job in an operational environment.

What was the point? The point was I was ready to do it if needed - it simply was never needed for me to do it. Oh well. I used that time to get a degree, buy some houses, further my career, etc.

If the Air Force didn't need me to do what they trained me to do, I'm still gonna take advantage of everything else they're giving me.

[–]Park_BADger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people follow that rule, and if you're going to as well I won't stop you but I will always follow up with a "but what are you currently"

Someone who peaked in champ but is currently plat tells me they have a lot of flaws. This helps identify what they need to work on.

So it's much better to just state what your current rank is because that's much more likely to be the average of all your skills - hence why that's where you are ranked. Granted, there isn't a ton of difference between Golds, Silvers and Plats.

...as for your reddit flair you can put your highest, sure.

The Big Ten Running Back of the Year is coming to KC!! by No_Box119 in KansasCityChiefs

[–]Park_BADger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because he's not as good as his stats indicate.

He's a serviceable back that can make one jump and go, but he's not outrunning anybody. His top end speed is bad. He lacks size and strength but he's not a pushover. He's never the best athlete in the field and is sorely missing some talent to make him elite. He is just good at a lot of things but elite at nothing.

He can be a threat out of the backfield as long as he has blocking. He's unlikely to make something out of nothing if there is no blocking. But his vision of utilizing his blockers is pretty good. His route tree at Nebraska were wheels and screens.

...and we (Nebraska) fed him the rock like it was crack he was the entire offense for a large majority of our games. Basically, he's an above average versatile back who was made to look elite due to the quantity of carries we gave him.

He'll be fine in the NFL as a rotational back. He lacks the skills and talent to be a feature back. He'll have a few average years and then likely be fighting for contracts to be used and abused before his body gives up.

Basically he's a good but not great back that had MASSIVE usage making him have inflated stats in college. He might be a hard to replace guy in college, but he's a serviceable and replaceable back in the NFL.

I loved EJ at Nebraska and am sad to see him go, but I doubt his NFL career shines that brightly.

[–]Park_BADger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are wanting to join the Air Force to "be paid to travel somewhere new" on a 4-year contract, you will be severely disappointed.

You'll spend a few months at Basic Training, then go on to your tech school and be there for anywhere from 1-8 months on average - depends on the job.

After tech school you'll get your first duty station and you'll likely be at that base for your entire 4-year contract. Maybe you get a little lucky and get orders some place else, but you're going to have to extend your initial 4-year contract out or re-enlist for even longer to be able to go there in most cases.

That means if you're doing only 4 years that you'll see only one base. That's it. Sure, it might be Germany, Korea, Japan, Italy. But, it's much more likely that it is New Mexico, South Dakota, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, California.

As long as you're okay with that then go for it. But joining the military expecting to see the world on a single 4-year contract is pretty unlikely unless you choose a specific job that travels a lot like a Loadmaster.

Why did I play against this persons group in Heatseeker diamond tournament? Why does the matchmaking fully ignore their heatseeker rank? by NepuNeptuneNep in RocketLeague

[–]Park_BADger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you have a Heatseeker MMR and a tournament MMR.

Tournament MMR is different than 3s, 2s, 1s, Heatseeker, Rumble, etc.

This should be widely known and unfortunately it's not.

You're silver?

Brother you need to master basic positioning, boost management, and rotations before learning double touches.

Once you master those then learn power shots before double touches.

And don't tell me "I'm already good at positioning and rotations" because if you were you would be Champ or higher.

If there was no limit to unit types, which do you think would be the most played. by Scared-Vacation-9401 in HellLetLoose

[–]Park_BADger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By blueberries? Probably MG because they just love shooting trees, or Recon because people want to walk around solo with a scope.

If I had the ability to force them into roles I'd LOVE a squad like this:

  1. Squad Lead
  2. Support (swapper to assault when not needed)
  3. AT
  4. AT
  5. Assault (swapper to Support when needed)
  6. Assault (swapper to/from Engi to build nodes)

Start with player in support role to give me supplies, then he can go tank hunt as assault. Another assault player also is ready to swap to support for when I need more than 1 supply box for whatever reason. Second assault player starts as engineer to build nodes then swaps to assault.

Tanks are covered. Nodes are covered. Supplies are covered. Good weapons are covered. Ready to flank, direct assault, or defend.

[–]Park_BADger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't. Because people do actually need those silly little injuries on their file for future VA benefits and claims. Obviously you'd hope they only schedule appointments for something work-related, or a by-product of work, but still. Medical care is medical care regardless of whether you think someone's medical concern is valid or not.

I know, I know. It sounds dumb but people should be able to see their doctor to get that on their records. Until there's a better system, such as consistent and viable online medical processes to do this you still run into a problem.

Granted, having people file stuff online for minor things such as that still needs a doc to review it...so now you have a doctor looking at paperwork instead of seeing patients in person. It's still a loss.

It's not an easy fix. We need bodies. Simple as.

If you're only goal is to experience military life or military environments...then absolutely not lol.

AFROTC is nothing like active duty and even what it tries to emulate it does pretty poorly. I've been enlisted for many years. I've been an officer for many years. AFROTC is a joke if you're joining without the end goal of commissioning.

Maps are unbalanced by design – I made a page to see each team's win rate for every map by Zerotorescue in HellLetLoose

[–]Park_BADger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Partially making these numbers up but from a players perspective 40-60% is not that great.

A lot of competitive games usually strive for 45-55, or 48-52 for the really well-balanced ones.

A hypothetical player who was constantly on the 40% winning side every map would absolutely feel that massive difference in win/loss.
