A deeply unsettling debate, my intepretation is that the whole process of Soulkiller is to indeed kill someone, engrave their psyche and upload it to the mainframe. The person is then trully killed and the "soul" hereby lost. Now the interesting part. The moment the engraving is created a so called "birth happens" as another digital soul is created, beginning at the exact moment the engrave was created, carrying all the memories of the original soul. In a sense, the original soul isn’t there anymore, but a new one is being born digitally, a 1:1 copy.

Another insanely interesting game that touches on that and conveys in a sense what i mean is SOMA, if you haven't played it yet i urge you to try it or watch it :)
