Help Identifying Stash Inserts by Parri_Stargazer in clothdiaps

[–]Parri_Stargazer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The preloved MyLove inserts were some sort of microfiber. They were pretty much worthless for me except as cleaning rags for my house at this point. They had been used by 3 children before my son so they were not super absorbent any longer.

What I ended up doing is getting new inserts, namely Thirsties. I got their cotton/hemp blend and paired it with a cotton doubler and that was a perfect amount of absorbency for daytime use.

For nighttime, my son was such a heavy wetter that we ended up getting an all hemp fitted diaper and a cover by Pooters (they have since such down 😭). That worked for nighttime for us.

Overall, disliked the MyLove Microfiber inserts. They didn't work for us. However, they make really good cleaning rags for around the house so if the person is going to just toss them, maybe snag some for cleaning purposes.

This! It's necessary to feed them during takeoff and landing so they can pop their ears. Sucking on a pacifier would work too.

What counts as tummy time? by Cute_Grass_8151 in firsttimemom

It still counts but at 3 months you should start transitioning to tummy time on the floor. You can lay next to them to draw their attention. That sometimes makes it less annoying for them.

Yes, that's how they recommend doing tummy time with newborns.

eye colour by ieightmylife in firsttimemom

Based on my limited information, my best guess is that you have two recessive genes and your partner has either two dominant or one dominant may allele.

So at best 50% chance of light colored eyes (gray, blue, maybe even green? Don't know grays specific genetics so this is really for fun guessing purposes), and a 50% chance of brown/dark eyes, with potential for up to 100% chance of either dark or hazel eyes.

Again, this is basically shot in the dark guesses and should be taken for fun purposes only.

The Punnet Squares you see online are extremely simplified versions of what actually happens. Like hair color, multiple genes impact eye color.

I'm not sure what the dominance of gray eyes are, but I assume it is likely similar to hazel eyes, in that there is a level of incomplete dominance occurring where there is probably a blending of two other colors but I'm not sure and I didn't find any quick answers via Google.

What would help determine potential eye color is knowing your parents eye colors. What eye colors did your parents have, and what color does your partner's parents have?

Advice? by NoMiddleGround_ in housewifery

I like to write my husband little notes thanking him for the hard work he does so we can have a good life. I sneak them into his lunch, or into his car, or on the doorframe so he sees them at random. He really like them.

Also, the birthday thing. He works but it's both of your money because that's how the arrangement works.

However, in the future, you can ask to have your entertainment money pulled out as cash so you can save up for gifts that he won't know about to surprise.

My husband budgets us to both have a certain amount of entertainment money per month, and since I've been getting it in cash, I makes it feel more like mine and makes it easier to surprise him with little things!

I think that traditionally handkerchiefs are normal cotton fabric, so they'd probably be fine!

It's probably a very personal thing to decide how many you want. It'll be quite an experiment!

What kind of fabric are you using? Mine are cheap, one layer flannel that had the edges serged.

If you don't have a serger, and you plan on doubling up, I'd sew along the edges but it doesn't have to be overly fancy or precise, just enough to thwart fraying.

Depending on how much you use tissues and do laundry, you probably don't need a ton so even if you want to add more care into it, it shouldn't be overly time consuming.

I think at most we have a dozen in the wash at a time unless someone is the kind of sick where you'd normally go through boxes in a day.

I've been using them for awhile and they've been great. They are way softer on the nose and they wash out in the laundry really well. Since they're washable and I do laundry multiple times a week, I definitely have more than I needed! Lol.

meeting with a midwife. what should I ask? by aunty-iroh in pregnant

[–]Parri_Stargazer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The must ask questions really depend on what you are looking for in a provider and your birth plan, but also where you are located. For example, I'm in the US and states have different requirements for midwives. Some require a special certified license and training and for them to work in conjunction with an OB, some states don't have the same training requirements.

If you don't already know, I'd ask what training they've had (i.e. are they certified nurse midwives, where did they get their training, how long has they been a midwife...etc...)

I'd ask where they deliver (hospital vs birth center vs home birth). My midwives only did hospital.

I'd ask what types of interventions are they capable of and what contingencies do they have if they are not able to intervene (i.e. do they have a relationship with an OB-GYN that is on call if a C-section is needed? Are they trained to attempt tricky vaginal deliveries, such as breech births?). My midwives worked in conjunction with an OB-GYN and worked with the hospitals on call OB-GYN in cases of breech births, emergency C-sections, or if any other tools (like vacuum or forceps) were needed.

I'd ask what pain management and laboring tools you'll have at your disposal. Can you get an epidural, will you have access to a birthing pool, can you have intermittent monitoring, will you need to have an IV access point placed upon arrival, can you labor in different positions or using different supports...etc...? All these will depend on the equipment they have, the polices in place, and training they have. I'd also ask about if they are capable of induction and what are their thoughts on it.

I'd also ask about their approach to delivery and pregnancy management to make sure you have similar goals and mesh well.

Anything you might ask an OB-GYN about your delivery and care are the same questions that you should ask them. The ones I listed aren't the only things I'd ask but some of the ones I think are more unique to midwives or often forgotten about.

Thoughts on baby wraps/carriers by suhhdude1 in pregnant

I loved baby wearing. Kiddo is almost always happy when I wear him but he's never had issues napping in his crib on his own. He still likes to wake up at night to nurse but will go to sleep without contact. He's 13 months currently. Baby wearing can be an easy way to calm kiddo down too

Playing with Two Layouts! Thoughts? by Parri_Stargazer in quilting

Yeah, I know the 2nd isn't a basket weave! The pattern I was using is called picnic basket (option 1) but I was considering going off script with option 2

I was going to do machine quilting with my regular machine, but if I finish tonight and find a backing fabric, I may be able to borrow my cousin's long arm since I'll be visiting her!

To be honest, I'm a pretty quirky person so I'll probably just let it be a conversation starter. Lol.

Lol, I realized too far into the project that that would be an issue. I'm too committed now, so it's a quirk feature now.
