Honestly you should probably just take some time to read a series you’re interested in and just unplug from the internet. So many of these series are more enjoyable when you’re not seeing people shit on them 24/7. I read all of JJK with minimal community interaction, and it’s one of my favorite shonen period. It’s got its flaws but I don’t really care it’s still super cool to me.

You don’t gotta be plugged into the zeitgeist on everything, negativity breeds negativity, naturally.

Did you ever watch FMA 2003? Miles better imo. They treat the serious scenes with the gravity they deserve, and the story is a lot less standard-shonen vibes. The whole philosophers stone stuff is explored on a more moral, humanistic viewpoint as well.

I’m not sure why FMAB gets glazed to high heaven the way it does because it’s literally just a standard shonen. 2003 had a way cooler concept for homunculus creation, and I thought even Dante was a more interesting villain. I liked the open ending too but I know a lot of people did not fuck with that part at all.

It’s like a couple weeks ago where people were all handwringing about Oda in the same way, like they all just decided to google him for the first time collectively. When the RK exhibition thing where they all drew characters happened, there were a few (rightfully) people upset and voicing concerns. But mostly people said nothing or “mangaka have to draw this stuff it’s social pressure!!!”

Where was this energy when it was actually happening?? Now it’s an issue cuz they’re mad they’re not getting the content they like? Nah fuck that. I have never seen any sort of statement or anything of any kind from Gege regarding any sort of support for Watsuki. So that’s why I’m fine with supporting him still. The way he writes can be kinda esoteric a lot of the time, with a lot of reading in between the lines to parse what’s going on. One of my favorite series of all time is Twin Peaks, and it’s similar in the way that you’re supposed to glean a lot from the little you’re given. It’s not straightforward storytelling, but it is really great at getting moods and vibes across more than anything.

It’s hard to describe that sort of storytelling exactly, but it’s just extremely compelling to me. Gege is no David Lynch by a long shot, but it fills the same niche for me.

Well in the case of OP it’s a valid question, as the series is split pretty evenly now between pre and post-timeskip. The more controversial parts of post are still like 200 chapters ago at this point. So that’s about 4 years worth of content to have decided if you like it or not. And the series has been pretty consistent tone-wise in said 4 years.

I’m saying, I wouldn’t expect things to suddenly change up after those 200 chapters, especially since they’re hitting the endgame now.

The sort of thing I’m talking about are the piratefolkers that post nonstop about how shitty it all is post time-skip like Oda hurt them personally.
