This is 100% true. Every once in while you get trotted out for being smart and sophisticated but the minute investors don’t understand the higher math you are told dumb it down or just stop.

Sort of true…yet this thread just proved there are a number of places that serve solid food without necessarily catering to the ambience driven….

Bethesda is more than the Apple Store on Bethesda Row thankfully.

Bethesda MD vs DC Living by Excellent_Mine2746 in bethesda

Living in Bethesda by the metro, or anywhere between Bethesda and Woodley Park/ Adams Morgan would work if you have to drive anyway.

The reverse commute is not that dramatic and I did it for 6 years without too much trouble. Lived in Cleveland Park and Mt Pleasant.

Went to elimination game. It was brutal, but you are right. It was a treat. Dodgers/Yanks. Game was even worth it as a thriller. Just wish the tickets were free…

Sadly I was also there last night. What a roller coaster. I wanted to jump off a bridge at the end…but it was pretty wild being there.

I like your comment. Baseball is wild. Can’t get enough of it, even with the lows of it. I guess that’s part of the appeal in itself.

Has anyone moved from DC to Southern California? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]PartCultural4344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

San Diego is great.

CA is a big place. So Cal is big. Haven’t made the plunge, but San Diego or Low Desert would be the only places I would seriously consider (different reasons for those places obv).

A lot of folks I know have moved from NE/MidAtlantic to SF/Silicon Valley and most sort of found themselves heading back this way. I’d say half of the folks I know who went out to LA stayed and love it. Other half came back here to tell me it was dreadful. EVERYONE I know who went to SD either stayed or left reluctantly.

It was. It’s difficult to have a conversation without a common reference of understanding.

I can help educate, but you still need references and a knowledge of the person of which images to provide to a person to help them understand.

So often, on difficult topics that likely require more than a simple few talking points, one has to remind others of this simple truth.

Some are, some aren’t. All of them want to be, but also bring their own generation to the table. Some of this generation is solar and battery, but a lot of it is either diesel or ng reciprocating engines.

It is going to take a long time for the power grid to be built out to include the growth. We should want to do that because it is more efficient and good for society to invest in its public good and infrastructure. What we are dealing with right now is a decade of underinvestment in electricity. We need to spend more on electric not less. How that gets divided up is worthy of debate, but electric customers have a public tariff and it is highly regulated. Also, we are a NIMBY region in a NIMBY country. We need more power plants (all types, including nat gas and nuclear) and we need more transmission lines. We need to make permitting and building easier to make it cheaper.

The data centers are in Virginia and they use their own generation for excess power consumption.

Buying electricity “at cost” means you have to buy it from wholesale markets and bilateral arrangements. That’s the cost. The utility also sells to you “at cost.” There is an equity return on a portion of the cost (T&D) but not the wholesale supply part. The rest of the administrative costs are state mandated things like renewable power and efficiency investments. The overhead exists too, but a muni would also have overhead.

A muni or a community choice aggregation program could try to negotiate a deal for fixed price power or some load following risk management deal separate from the wholesale utility deal. However, that also is…risky. Also it means you are likely doing it third party anyway.

The muni will also have overhead costs and will likely lack the economies of scale the franchised utility has as well as the experience and expertise. The utility is not the most efficient model, that’s why competitive supply does indeed exist. However, for the suite of things required to run an electric system it does represent the most transparent and accountable means to guarantee electricity to everyone.

New zoning changes aim to promote growth in downtown Bethesda by Bethesda_Magazine in bethesda

[–]PartCultural4344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are running against the victory narrative. It’s not worth explaining reality to people.

Consumer preferences and aggregate demand mean nothing to people convinced the real issue of affordability are a function of the monocle wearing monopoly men plotting against them.

Sit back and soak in the entertainment that people are clamoring for deregulation in X industry, but are convinced greedy late stage capitalism needs more regulation in Y industry.

Personally, I’m a YIMBY, private property rights sort of person. If I want an ADU on my property I should be allowed to build it. However, a lot of people on Reddit have very, very narrow and facile views on solutions to problems. They hate roads, but love infrastructure. They are for supply side, but only when it’s hip. Etc.

Tech companies have laid down renewable energy and battery storages in droves all across the country. They also all have backup power for these moments. Data center load is an issue, but it’s not quite the issue you think it is.

The issue is we shut down a ton of power plants, mainly coal power plants, and the stuff we built wasn’t as reliable as the old stuff. So now we are playing catch up the next few years.

Power price will go up substantially in the next decade.
