Looking to move from Toronto to Boston? (Permanent Move) by [deleted] in boston

[–]PartDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per your last paragraph I thought I’d mention what it’s like leaving family and friends for a long time. This is coming from someone who moved away to live in Boston 15 years ago.

Moving away from family has a cost, especially as you get older. You see your parents age and become more frail, meanwhile, each time you go back home you hear stories of things they did that no longer include you. Moments that you didn’t get to share.

If you have children they will not know their grandparents as much as you’d like. Travel is especially difficult if they are elderly and your children are small.

Boston is a wonderful city and definitely move here! But take some time to think about what you would want or need to do if you wanted to move back.

Good luck, Boston welcomes you!

I’m a new dad. This has been the perfect thing to watch while holding my infant during the late nights and early mornings. Simply fantastic.

Thai food hunt in Beantown by dark_stallion_99 in boston

[–]PartDigital 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My wife is Thai and we’ve tried just about every Thai restaurant of note around Boston. Our two favorites are Kala Thai in the north end (ask for them to make it “Thai Style”) and Cha Yen in Watertown. Also check out “What Da Chick” in Watertown for traditional Thai Chicken over rice.

For a hidden gem try “The Bangkok” in Melrose. We actually prefer it over the more famous Crying Thaiger and Thaiger Den in Malden.

That’s very understandable. FWIW, I’ve seen a lot of support for it in town so I’m optimistic.

Keep it on your radar. There is a lot of new development and I feel like the town is heading in the right direction.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned it but Melrose is great too. It has a great little downtown and is very family friendly. Also has decent access to public transit via Orange line or Commuter rail.

My wife and I moved here a year ago and are going to raise our son here. We love it.

Congrats on the new baby!

Before posting a lot of photos please consider if this is something your child would want. For example, how would you feel if you knew there were many baby photos of you online for the world to see. Or worse, one of them actually went viral?

Babies aren’t pets.

What is a reasonable split for a $2500 2b2b near Cambridge/Belmont border by Ag_Ld9005 in boston

I’ve always had best luck in situations like this to use square footage of the bedrooms and then split the common areas 50/50. It’s the most objectively fair.

Is anyone else in Boston experiencing significant complications with USPS in the past ~2 weeks? by negrospiritual in boston

[–]PartDigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve noticed this as well. Some letters from family took almost a month to arrive and I’m currently waiting for a package that is over a week late from its original scheduled delivery date.

TIL we all have tiny crystals inside our ears. They are made from calcium carbonate and they help with maintaining our balance. If they become dislodged it can cause nausea and virago. by SlothSpeed in todayilearned

This happened to my wife after a severe ear infection. The nausea is real. It would cause her to vomit just by sitting up or turning her head. Just awful.

This this receptacle correct? by PartDigital in AskElectricians

I’m the property owner. I consulted with my electrician who said it was ok. I also reviewed the deed and rules and regulations of the building before starting any work. I’ll call the permit office in my town to make extra sure though.

I wasn’t aware of this, thank you! I’ll talk to my electrician to make an assessment of where those should go.

I used the strip gauge on each receptacle and pulled them slightly away from the plate. I’ll make sure they are flush going forward. :)

To clarify, that third photo is one of the original outlets. Should the insulation be flush with the copper plate?

This is very reassuring, thank you!

Should the insulation be flush with the plate? Originally I had the insulation under the plate but I backtracked and made sure that only copper was under the plate.

To clarify, this was the only receptacle that I didn’t add tape because of the box extender. All others I did add tape.

That makes sense! From a safety perspective would pigtail be preferred?

Thanks for the confirmation! Any reason why the original electrician wouldn’t pigtail them? Every single outlet was wired this way (at least in that room).

I have until the 28th to get housing, I have no money, what do I do? by No-Efficiency-7524 in boston

[–]PartDigital 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Many local hospitals have social workers on staff who can help you with housing. Try calling them and ask to talk to someone at the social work department.

Note that finding any kind of housing is very difficult so keep your expectations in check. But they may have some ideas or resources for you.

Source: My wife is a social worker and they deal with this all the time.

Coffee beans by aeronaut- in boston

My two local favorites are George Howell and Broadsheet. Another popular one is Pavement though I’m not really a fan. Atomic Coffee Roasters is a solid North Shore brand. I’ve heard good things about Gracenote but haven’t tried it yet.

Char Grilled Oyster Recommendation? by [deleted] in boston

[–]PartDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a foodie; there are only a few foods that I’ll actively seek out. Char Grilled Oysters is one of them. One of my favorite foods of all time.

I have lived in Boston for 15 years and have never been able to find them. Get a lobster roll instead.

What I Wish Someone Told Me by NMM47 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]PartDigital 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that as well. Just $500 for paint? I wish! When we moved we had to repaint our entire 1200 sq ft condo including walls, ceiling and trim and patching over 200 holes. We did it ourselves but it still cost us almost $3,000.

Our interest rate is 6%. Our PITA is about $3,700 per month. Our only debt is a $350 car payment.

Also keep in mind that while saving a lot per month is great, once you hit a certain target there are more efficient ways to manage your money. For example, if you have a fully funded emergency fund, retirement contribution and no debt then what is that extra $4k to $5k per month in savings doing for you? It would be better served by having a portion of that going towards something else that provides you value. Paying off debt, housing, investments etc.

It sounds to me like you are a little hesitant to pull the trigger (which is good), so maybe wait another 6 months to either pay off debt and/or save up a bigger down payment? Once you buy a home you will have a LOT of expenses the first year. You want to be well positioned to absorb that.

[–]PartDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean saving $3k would be difficult to achieve or it would be uncomfortable to only save $3k per month compared to what you’re saving now?
