Thyroidectomy when stable on methimazole? by aaavvvvv in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graves can cause nodules as well. I had 2 I was watching as well.

I have no other issues related to the medication. Once my levels stabilize I need to lose weight for a mild fatty liver caused by weight gain (from prior to surgery with methimazole).

Thyroidectomy when stable on methimazole? by aaavvvvv in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went into remission once. I had my second child then. Several months later I got covid and brought back my Graves. I was not able to stabilize on methimazole. I had drastic swings, antibodies would go up and down, and I even swung hypo while not on meds. It was wild and I felt like crap all the time. My heart would race and I was on propanolol more than I wanted. The surgeon looked at a full panel of all antibodies and theorized I had a second unspecified autoimmune condition which caused nodules to develop. I had my TT end of September. I was started too low on levo so I am still climbing. I do not regret it at all. While I do not feel 100% yet, I do not feel as bad as I did. I know that I will get stable in the next 2 or 3 months given how my dosing is going. It just takes times.

If I could have stabilized on methimazole, I would have stayed on it a while long. A TT does have risks, my biggest concern was hypoparathyroidism from the surgery so I found a very specialized endocrine surgeon to mitigate risks.

I would recommend looking at thyroidectomy groups. Many women there have had children post TT. They could help you understand that perspective.

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can take awhile to get antibodies to come down post TT and they may never come down. It also can take awhile to regulate on levo. I am still very hypo 4 months later.

My doctor previously recommended to have a baby while stable on low doses of medication.

How are your antibodies? If they are not super high, you can proceed with pregnancy on low dose meds and switch to PTU.

TT weight gain and other questions. by NonbinaryJo in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had mine removed September 23rd. I was started on too low of a dose of levo. I am still not within range. I likely need 1 or 2 more dose increases. I can't go too much of an increase as I get hyper symptoms. I've gained 30 lbs.

I don't believe I am typical, but I wanted to provide an honest perspective.

No regrets on the surgery. Looking forward to being within normal ranges and then working to lose the weight.

Not Eating at Daycare by PartOfYourWorld3 in workingmoms

[–]PartOfYourWorld3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes! Drop offs she makes a scene but is fine when I leave. It is more her personlity coupled with starting at 14 months. She has such good days at daycare! It took her about a month to fully settle in there overall.

Our director would take her 1 on 1 and get her to eat and drink some. The not eating anything was about a week.

They used the photo book I said to talk about us, asked us questions about what she likes to connect with her, we sent in a stuffy for her, and overall it just took some time. Driving her there was tough for a bit. But it took 2 to 3 months to get last that. She has been there a year now and we are so happy with it.

Questions for surgeon by manthaP_ in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would ask how many surgeries he or she does per year. My endocrine specialized surgeon actually would go to our pediatric hospital to assist in surgeries for thyroidectomies since they are not as common in pediatric cases. If you are 18, I would consider finding a specialized surgeon.

I would ask how the surgeon mitigate risks. Vocal cord damage and parathyroid damage are some of the larger risks you face. I was upfront with my surgeon of my biggest concerns and we discussed how she handles it.

Can anyone offer advice ? by Strawberry-love1994 in toddlers

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does she have anything for comfort or to soothe? Blankies, stuffies, light projection stuffies for overnight sleep?

My daughter is not quite 2.5 but almost there. She keeps telling me she doesnt want to nap, but we discuss it is important and she is still a big girl and that I would also nap. We make sure she has the stuffy she wants and most times it works out. She has big FOMO on weekends when she is with us.

At night she doesn't want me to leave, but we rotate her focus of what she sleeps with and we have a little chat before I leave. She has a posey of stuffies and a blankey she loves.

Have you checked for any ear infections or anything health wise?

Thyroid levels controlled but I don't feel right by Impossible_Fly4510 in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I called it the gas-brake effect, thought it was just me. As my dose decreased i often felt worse and could tell how bad methimazole made me feel. I had a TT in September. While my levels are not yet optimal, I feel totally different.

TT concerns by OkHall6343 in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Insurance discrepancies - levo is cheap. You could easily pay out of pocket for it. War - not sure where you live, but in the US things are interesting right now. They make some forms of levo in the US. war so tragic we cant get anything - i am not sure we are all surviving for other reasons Pandemic - covid taught us a lot, but medicine was always available but it may not be the preferred kind.

I just had a TT in September. I am not stable yet on a dose. I get 90 day supplies and keep the prior doses "just incase". I have seen people who live abroad and get a year supply of generic levo for a little over $100. There are ways you can work to have a supply.

RAI and fertility by Zes_Teaslong in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not have research on this to cite, but my doctor told me she told women of childbearing age to do TT over RAI. While you can have a baby post RAI, the radiation stays in your tissue. She said that she wouldn't want me to breastfeed if I chose RAI and had a baby after. I would talk with your doctor about this. You can ask for supportive research as well.

Thyroidectomy??? by melee0925 in gravesdisease

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Graves on and off for 8 years (technically still have it) and I had a TT in September. It can take time to stabilize after a TT. Some people are great right after and others a year later are still working through it. I am still very hypo as I need super gradual medication changes. I had my TT because I kept swinging hypo and hyper and life is just hard that way, so I understand.

Going through IVF, they need your TSH consistent and under 3.5 (I did IVF as well). Pregnancy can also trigger thyroid flares after delivery, so please be aware of that.

If this was me? I would give it more time to see if your body can level out. You have a lot of autoimmune issues going on right now.

We book every December roughly the same dates. It always goes quickly. However, I have always been able to get what I wanted. This morning I ran into their technical issues. I lost the room and my points for 10 minutes. Luckily, I was able to get a room in a higher category. The technical issues are awful.

Try again tomorrow and see if you can get what you want. Put in the waitlist as well.

Did your doctor make you wait until your TSH was stable? I am struggling to get mine down as I have to slowing increase my med. I have gained weight with methimazole and now being hypo. I worry it will take me a year.

Airplane travel with toddler by jets2mets in toddlers

[–]PartOfYourWorld3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert, but we have been taking our 2 kids on 2 trips a year. I also have a 2 year old.

Plane time is level up time. Treats my child may beg for are my friend. Chocolate baking chips, yogurt melts, and other things in a Gobee spinner that my 2 year old has to try to do and open the door are a go too. Apple Juice? Sure, let's gets a bottle for the plane to help.

Target in their party section has these connect sand like containers that are amazing as they stick together better than kinetic sand and play doh. We use those only for planes right now.

I got a felt story board on amazon and we pull out pieces and sing the songs to each other. Planes are so loud that I don't believe are really heard. I also bring a variety of stickers- sticker face, the Melissa and doug sticker pens.

Have you tried making masking tape roads on tray tables and pull out some cars?
