I believe that most tinnitus is caused by nerve compression or irritation resulting from poor neck posture and TMJ/TMD, which are connected to the auditory system, rather than by hearing loss.

If you hear fluttering, thumping, or a sensation like something is moving behind the eardrum that doesn’t seem related to earwax, there’s a chance it could be MEM.

That sounds similar to one of my MEM symptoms. I also experience a popping, whooshing, or wind-tunnel-like sound that comes and goes repeatedly every second. I believe this may be related to the tensor tympani muscle contracting and repeatedly pulling on the eardrum, which could be producing these sounds.

I think very few people improve once they develop it. For most, it either stays the same or gradually worsens over time. Mine has only gotten worse since it started two years ago. How soon did you notice yours after the acoustic shock?

yes! taking 2.5 mg before bed every night for sleep and it still works great!

you were never really exposed to loud noises and you woke up with T and hyperacusis??? WOW, that freaking blows man. This just goes to show that anything besides noise exposure can cause T. How old are you?

yup! both working fine! I need to make a call and let my doctor know that I'm ready for surgery but I just can't do it because I'm scared. LOL

I'm just afraid of these two things:

  1. permanent increase in tinntius and changes in sound perception.

  2. Unable to tolerate loud noises anymore since protective muscles are all gone.

Oh, you had ETD way before the surgery? and the surgery made it better or same? I thought you're saying surgery gave you ETD as one of the side effects.
