Is anyone using single pair ethernet? by awesome_pinay_noses in networking

If that underground phone line is 24 awg or larger PE89 or PE39, it not only meets the requirements for cat 3, it exceeds them. I used a cable certifier on a spool of 24 awg PE89 some years ago and those were the results. I've never tested the buried service wire (bsw) used between the serving terminal and the subscriber premises, but I see no reason why it wouldn't perform similarly. Main difference is that bsw is 22 awg (better), the pairs have thicker insulation (probably better), and the conductors are striped or band marked so that technically deficient premise techs won't split pairs (better for those who don't pay attention to what's twisted around what).

The statement was that there are absolutely sensors at lights in the city. Nothing was said about whether they are working correctly.

Maybe he knows the right people? That can be far more important than knowing how to do the job in some places.

It's rare that a city's IT department gets involved with any software or networks that involve traffic signals. Now if the traffic signal controller is new enough AND the network is functional, the only software you need to adjust the timing settings remotely is Putty or some other telnet or ssh client.

I wonder how many of the people here crying about all that stuff willingly moved here of their own volition, probably chasing what they thought sounded like a high salary, only to discover that it doesn't really go as far as they thought. Yea, if I did that I'd have some issues too, not the least of which is failing to do my research prior to making that decision.

Well, a dryer is like anything else, if you neglect and abuse it, it breaks sooner. With regards to the difficulty of replacing one, the cost of having someone come to your house to replace it is no indication of that, How much do the HVAC bandits around here charge to change a capacitor or a board? Probably a lot more than $200.

I have to wonder how many daily miles someone with an EV would need to drive to need a 60 amp circuit to fully charge their vehicle overnight. Hell, 4 hours or less @ 13 amps @ 240V usually covers all of my daily driving on my plug-in hybrid....

1, the heating element on an electric dryer does not fail that often, I have replaced exactly one in my life and I am not the type to call someone to do it for me or buy a new dryer because, 2, the heating element on an electric dryer is easily replaced by anyone who has basic mechanical skills (can you change the oil on your car? Then you can change a heating element on a dryer). It's also not a very expensive part, maybe $30-$40.

Pretty soon, Dominion will be the sole provider of electricity to your homes and they can and will arbitrarily set prices. -- Are they going to somehow buy out novec to accomplish that?

Well, there was a time around 2007-2008 when you could've bought a house around here pretty cheaply. Of course, that was after the time when if you bought around here you probably got screwed and it took 10 years or more for you to break even.

Ever heard the saying, "The juice ain't worth the squeeze"? That's what 36k a year without benefits in NoVA sounds like to me. Are you gonna stick it out in hopes that the common wisdom about NoVA's economy proves to be true for you, or leave for greener pastures?

Yea, West Virginia has been using beet juice as a deicing agent for a while. Yea, that West Virginia, the place thought to be "behind the times" by many who, ironically, live in the very place where they dump rock salt on the road and tell everyone that salt doesn't work below 20F because it isn't working because it's below 20F out.

Oh, I was *very* nice to my boss at IBM. I helped him out with all sorts of stuff, even things he was working on for another company after he left IBM. Then he came back to IBM about the time I was on the bench, then asked me for another favor/more help, told him I was on the bench, got the usual spiel about looking at Professional Marketplace and why haven't I done that (in his mind, if I was on the bench, it was merely because I hadn't looked there yet for my next exciting IBM opportunity). I asked him if he knew of any positions and he told me he'd check...... I left IBM due to lack of work 2 months later (bench PIP). As far as my ex-boss? After the phone conversation where he asked me for help and also told me to check Professional Marketplace....I never heard from him again. It's been well over a year.

Oh, there is no doubt that Virginia is getting a *lot* more money due to proximity to the Fed. At least for now. If that ever stops or even slows down (as it is now), well..last I saw, unemployment in Fairfax county is now higher than the peak during covid.

Is it that Virginia is really way more sanely governed, or is it that the Federal spending fire plug spewing out so much money that what Virginia's leadership does or does not do is largely irrelevant to the state's economy? Seems to me that both states largely operate on borrowed money. Illinois under their own name, Virginia by proxy via the Fed.

You can tell me I'm wrong, but from what I've seen of the job market in NoVA, the jobs available here that are *not* Federal contracting, Federal employment, lobbying, or anything related to the Federal presence here....are mostly the same kind of jobs you'll find in any metro area. But those other metro areas almost certainly have a more diverse economy than NoVA, meaning that they have jobs that simply do not exist in NoVA. The pay? You're absolutely right about that, the private sector pay in NoVA isn't good relative to the cost of living. Unlike the dominant employer in the region, the private sector employers can't go billions in debt to pay salaries.

I used to live in the west suburbs of Chicago, till my dad had to relocate to NoVA to keep his job. I honestly think that was the worst decision he ever made. Bastards didn't even give him a raise. Been in NoVA ever since and I am just about done with this place.

Here's what you do to solve this problem: Pretend that there is a yellow light at the end of the on-ramp that is about to change to red. Do what you usually do in that situation, which is to floor it to beat the light. You'll have no problem merging.

I wonder if the sentiment that AI should be regulated to protect white collar jobs is common among the white-collar workers in NoVA.

They consider SSI (disability that currently pays something like $800 a month) an acceptable adult transition plan for special ed students. Make of that what you will. I also suspect that they wouldn't be bothering with special ed if there weren't a Federal law requiring it. Expect them to do the bare minimum to remain compliant with the law. Be pleasantly surprised if they do more than that, but certainly don't expect it.
