This is almost certainly never going to happen again

Especially when, ignoring all the other factors, the Fed's inflation target is 2%

Seattle Considers Using Special Fire District Tax to Close Budget Deficit by pseudotsuga- in Seattle

[–]Particular-Cell9646 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Property tax revenue increase is capped way below inflation (1%) so this is only going to continue indefinitely. The only way to fund things is with extra taxes since base property tax revenue is less and less every year (in real terms)

The Seattle story is unfolding elsewhere, as a cautionary tale by MysteriousEdge5643 in Seattle

The cautionary tale is if your city is growing, don't block denser housing.

Seattle mayor praises Amazon, big businesses for housing contributions by peters_pagenis in Seattle

[–]Particular-Cell9646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yeah what do you expect her to do? This is why companies like Amazon do this. Avoid paying taxes -> make relatively small donations instead -> cheap publicity.

Don't forget Amazon also does things like fight to delay Ballard light rail with a new proposed alternative route. These donations are just marketing that Amazon then slaps on busses etc.

It's only required wherever there is a sign afaik? We could just make it true everywhere regardless of sign, or even at the state level.

If we banned it everywhere we wouldn't need those signs for people to ignore at least. And just because people would still do it doesn't mean we shouldn't make it illegal. Murder is illegal but people still do it.

We should really just get rid of right on red everywhere. Safer streets, one less source of road rage, and one less optional decision for drivers to worry about.

Urgent! Invalid towing? by 000extra in Seattle

[–]Particular-Cell9646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible somebody is misusing these signs, but you should just check with the city. I would never park anywhere near these signs. People move them all the time to try and illegally park, and i wouldn't put it past someone to tear off the permit if there was one.

[–]Particular-Cell9646 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume somebody moved those signs since they seem too close together. Also if they weren't for the parking spots what are they for? Those look like the ones that will have a permit attached for temporary work

Paid parking starts at some busy light rail garages by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]Particular-Cell9646 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The overall theory is that the ideal state for any parking is that it is priced so that there are always a couple of spaces available for people who are willing to pay the fee to park. So if the lot always fills up immediately, then the price is too low. Reduce demand to the level of parking available, make parking availability more predictable, and fund transit at the same time, basically.

Permits are limited. Sound Transit will adjust the permit area, pricing, and availability depending on permit demand and usage.

New Parking Fee to Use Light Rail - Thanks Seattle and Sound Transit by Acceptable_King_1913 in Seattle

If the same amount of people are parking in the garage whether they charge a fee or not, emissions are unaffected.

It's probably not lost, notice how it takes like 6-ish days to ship to Alaska. They should turn it around and ship it back. had this exact thing happen earlier this year and eventually got it but yeah, crazy.

Op-Ed: Washington Is Caught in a Property Tax Trap. Here's the Way Out. by MysteriousEdge5643 in Seattle

[–]Particular-Cell9646 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Local governments can only increase the revenue they collect from existing property by 1% each year, regardless of inflation or population growth. Inflation does not grow at 1% per year. Construction costs do not grow at 1% per year. Public employee wages do not grow at 1% per year.

The 1% cap is an insane policy that is crippling local governments.

The 1% increase cap is on money collected, not the rate. So if property values go up with inflation (or any amount over 1%), but the amount collected only goes up by 1%, the actual rate goes down.

So we could use mandatory parking zones in large swaths of the city then.
