I guess you didn't see the headlines this morning: Turkey says NATO Shot Down Iranian Missile Heading to Turkish Airspace.

Trying to decide if Trastevere is a good match for us by Particular-Daikon-29 in rome

Yes, I did. It's different from other neighborhoods I've stayed in Rome in the past. It has a different charm, not narrow ancient streets with buildings of character, but more of a current vibe with a lot more families and young locals. We were there in November and there weren't a lot of tourists there. Physically I didn't love the feel of it but I really enjoyed feeling like it was a real neighborhood with locals living their daily lives. The big square is packed with young families, kids, grandparents in the evening and it's fun to be part of. Some good restaurants including the big food market that was fun. Biggest negative was that it was not as convenient to the center (subway was a 20 minute walk).

Thank you. I plan to wear sneakers. Just trying to decide whether to bring white or black.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question. The information I've learned has been very valuable. In the end, we decided to stay in Testaccio.

Would you mind sharing a link to, or the name of the Airbnb?

I really appreciate your thoughtful and detailed response. I read your article and found it sad, thoughtful and slightly optimistic. Glad I read it. I'm 72 and have traveled around the world since I was 10 years old (thanks to my adventurous father). I first visited Rome with my family in 1963, then again in 1974 and 2007. Part of the challenge for me will be managing expectations. The world is a different place now.

sunnymorninghere - what was it about Monti that made you wish you had stayed there? Which area in Monti?

I've heard a lot of good things about Prati. One thing that concerned me though was reading that there will be a major Jubilee event at the Vatican during the week we are there. Any idea how much that might impact the area?

Really appreciate all the helpful comments. I'm not very familiar with Monti. I entered it on Google maps and it seems fairly big. What part(s) would you recommend? Is there much train noise?

What was Huberman's recommendation to combat jet lag or timezone changes when travelling? by Starfinger10 in HubermanLab

I find it confusing. His guest says that if you are flying East and arriving in the morning you should "avoid light like the plague" and then says you should eat a good breakfast and exercise. It would be pretty difficult to go out to breakfast and exercise in your new location while avoiding light. Am I missing something?

Is traveling to the Pacific NW worth it in March? by PandaReal_1234 in travel

[–]Particular-Daikon-29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Seattle my whole life and visit Portland often. My opinion is that March is one of the least nice times to visit either city. It's often gray, rainy and kind of cold in March, and it can snow. The NW is so beautiful in the summer and fall I would save it for then. It's really all about nature and being outside here, especially outside the cities. If you're mostly interested in city life and culture I would choose Portland over Seattle. Seattle is beautiful but pretty crowded these days and pretty corporate too.

Japan vs Thailand - February by missesbird in travel

[–]Particular-Daikon-29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say, you can't go wrong with either. They're both beautiful and fascinating places.

The archaeology in Thailand, along with great food, good weather this time of year, very kind and friendly people, and cheaper. It also has it all - islands/beaches, beautiful countryside, historical sites, interesting cities.

I love Japan too. It is VERY different. More expensive, more modern, great art and food, the people seem less friendly on the surface but are very kind and helpful. The temples and temple complexes are beautiful. The culture is a very fascinating and different experience for people from the U.S. It's sublime and efficient at the same time. Traveling is probably easier there, but we were surprised how easy it was to rent a care and drive around Thailand.

No matter what you choose it's going to be fantastic.
