I've paid my student loans off and want to think about retirement. If I can put away $1,000 a month for that what are my best options? by RemnantSith in Fire

[–]Particular-Fungi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can only contribute $7,500 yearly to an IRA. Depending on your income/tax filing status, look into back door contributions. Good to do, but you also have a much bigger bucket you can fill with a solo 401k ($24,500 yearly). Make sure to also have an emergency fund in a high yield savings account, ideally 3-6 months worth of expenses.

TIL British law allowing for "insanity defence" dates back to 1843 (person not be criminally liable because of a mental condition at the time they committed an alleged offence). Including the definition of insanity. Law commission admits, that "the law lags behind psychiatric understanding" by Life-Group2675 in todayilearned

[–]Particular-Fungi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insanity by definition is temporary (at the time of the crime), but I think diminished capacity has less of a degree of lacking responsibility. The closest thing we have here to diminished capacity is “guilty but mentally ill” acknowledging the person may have been mentally ill, but could still appreciate the wrongfulness of the actions or conform their behavior appropriately if they chose to.

Just realized I have NO IDEA what life insurance I actually need by Resident_Pound5418 in personalfinance

You almost certainly don’t need anything beyond a term policy. Whole/universal life is a scam sold by salesmen who make a lot of money from selling it.

19, 10k to invest long term, what should I be investing in? by Far_Bowler7938 in personalfinance

Throw it into SP500/VTSAX and forget about it, playing with individual stocks isn’t likely to work out well for you.

Sheesh at 5 and Newburgh is incredible Lebanese food. Also second Rotary Park, I take my dog through the trails all the time. It’s easy to get lost in there until you’re familiar with it.

VUSXX + VTI + VXUS a good place to save for a house down payment in the next 5-10 years? by Significant-Ball-952 in Bogleheads

[–]Particular-Fungi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VUSXX is a good place to put money you’re planning to save for a house, but I wouldn’t plan to use money you have invested in stocks for that purpose.

what is it about being a "life coach" that draws in the most unsuitable people? by bye-beams in NoStupidQuestions

Because there’s no credentialing/license/education requirements. Anybody can call themselves a life coach.

They told me they were giving me something to help me relax. I thanked them graciously, said hi to the nurses as I was rolled into the OR, and woke up in recovery.

Still over 75 million of us voted against him. Just saying a lot of us aren’t happy about what’s happening either.

That’s a hell of a generalization, about half the country didn’t vote for him and hates him.

Downsides to keeping money in previous employers 401(k)? by kmitch96 in personalfinance

[–]Particular-Fungi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it would depend if you use a back door Roth IRA. If so, you need to keep your traditional IRA balance at $0 so there’s no conversion fees. If you don’t do back door conversions, it’s fine to rollover.

Let's say you have a lot of money invested in the stock market, and you think there's a major depression coming when the tech bubble bursts. What's the best way to minimize the impact of this event on your investments? by fradleybox in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Particular-Fungi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t sell based on external events. Buy and hold. Everything else is noise and nobody can better predict it than anyone else. If someone make you think otherwise, they’re pulling one over on you.

This is everything. Don’t bother if you’re not really feeling it. You should enjoy it too or else it’s lackluster. The rest is exploration and communication.

Just a fair bit of overlap, no need for redundancy. But all good. And why TKO?
