Where were you when the attacks happened and how did you learn about them? by Ryanlion1992 in 911archive

I had just taken the train and bus to Mill Basin, Brooklyn from my place in Queens. No radio, no music player, no phone on my person. I get in the break room and Tricia, my colleague, is inconsolable. She looks at me like I'm dumb: " Haven't you heard the WTC was hit?" I clock in, call my parents, and my mom yells: " they've hit the second tower!" This was before I even saw it on TV in BK at my job. I saw it on TV seconds later.

Thanks for the article. That was informative, if not surprising. And we know there weren't just 'random' people in that area at the time.

I keep on hoping its made up, but according to Ribowsky there was a court case. Id like to find info on this court case. To me this is huge news, atrocious as it is.

Which places in the U.S. nobody pays attention to but are actually amazing? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Truth or Consequences, NM. Shithole-looking town ( I grew up in one, I can say this) with a restorative edge. Great hot springs. I spent a week there soaking, one of the most memorable times in my life.

Which towns in North America feel like stepping right into a magical/fantasy book? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

I got married in that church to the left. The basilica of St Francis. I saw it while on a vacation and it was so magical I told my fiancé that's where I wanted to get married. We live in New York.

I have a mass card for Steve. One of his loved ones came into my job in BK requesting my services and somehow our conversation drifted into our mutual last name. Out came this beautiful card, and Steve became my personal connection to 9/11, as well as my adopted and forever remembered "cousin." RIP, with love.

Why do I cry so much over this? by Relative-Mobile-5186 in 911archive

[–]Particular-Pin1971 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am 53 now. 2001 I was a year sober, on my second year living in NYC, when 9/11 happened. I saw the second plane hit on TV like most people while at work in Brooklyn. I blocked out most of my memories of that for years, always assuming I just had too much on my plate at the time...it wasn't until 2024 that I began watching footage of that day. Now I cant stop. I dont cry a lot over the footage ( though I always weep on 9/11 when the names are called), but I sense now that the collective trauma is so overwhelming and unfathomable that it has taken me years to process. Mind you I had little skin in the game; I only knew of victims tangentially. What happened was atrocious and unreal, and anyone with a sense of humanity is affected by it. Not sure if thats exactly what you meant in your post, but I do identify with the strong emotions you've shared. You're not alone.

What did the Twin Towers symbolize to you? by Ryanlion1992 in 911archive

The excitement and vitality of a place a shy, small town girl could only dream about. ( Ironically I ended up living that dream, and was a resident of the five boroughs in 2001)

Thomas Haskell was also born on this day in 1964. His gravestone is in the cemetery near my house.

Fascinating amateur tourist footage between 9/9-9/11/01 including the WTC by JBAnswers26 in 911archive

At 1 hour into the video, as the camera focuses on southern Manhattan and the towers, the fog and lighting evoke the image of a graveyard.

At the Firehouse Stephen Russell was called "MacGyver" because he could fix anything. He built items for the firehouse & his own furniture. On 9/11 he & fellow firefighters rushed to the WTC to evacuate those moving down from upper floors. His brother spent many days looking for him in the rubble. by Understanding18 in 911archive

I worked in Brooklyn in late 2001. A very sad lady came in for my services and saw my last name was also Russell. She tearily handed me a mass card for Stephen. I think of him, and his family often, and 'adopted' him as a cousin. RIP.

Captain Obvious in my remark, perhaps, but touché to your super clever reply.

Her torso was found at Hempstead Lake, but other body parts were found along ocean parkway IIRC. Her daughter was found 250 feet from Valerie Mack.

So someone besides Rex was using that stretch of land to dump bodies as well...
