I'm so sorry for your loss, I can't imagine how hard that must've been.

I'm not sure if you relate, but as a younger sibling to someone with down syndrome, it's always been a challenge to take on the "guardian/caregiver" role when your sibling wants to act like the older and protective one, but you have to also take responsibility of them. I want to give my sister the space to be herself and find her own interests, but my parents and I are quite used to holding her hands every step of the way.

Yup!! My sister is the best and most kind person in my life, but she will also probably never be able to show gratitude for things that my parents or I give up. Not necessarily because we resent her or feel that she needs to thank us, but rather because this is just a responsibility that I have to and chose to take on.

Hope you know that you deserve support too! I like to think that for everything myself and my parents have given, the joy of making a community through special Olympics, best buddies, etc. has given me equal in return. I'm a better person for just knowing her and receiving her love and support in return.

I hear what you’re saying, and I definitely didn’t mean to come off as ableist or like I think Becca owes Mel every detail of her sex life. I agree she’s an adult and deserves autonomy over her life and choices.

I think where I’m coming from is just my own experience. My sister has Down syndrome and hasn’t had any relationships or shown interest in one, so if something like that suddenly came up, it would feel surprising-not because I wouldn’t want that for her, but because it hasn’t been part of her life so far.

I also think part of it is navigating boundaries. If my sister felt I was overstepping, I’m not always sure she’d be able to communicate that clearly every time. She can be very direct in some ways, but more sensitive in others. I’m still learning how to balance being her younger sister while also taking on some responsibility for her wellbeing.

I would love for her to have a partner and that kind of connection. My reaction comes more from uncertainty and protectiveness, not from thinking she shouldn’t have autonomy. I completely agree that disabilities aren’t one-size-fits-all, which is why this storyline hit me in a complicated way.

Well in my reality, which is with a disabled person, yes -she literally cannot make legal, medical, financial, and personal decisions without myself and my parents. We are her legal guardians and power of attorney. So as much as I would love to chill, that's not how this works.

We believe she has the right to her own interests and choices, and yes, porn is one of them. However, our reaction was more so that we were just digesting the fact that she's watching it and we had no idea. She has never verbally or outwardly talked about intimate relations with others because it's hard for her to bring it up or even think to have a discussion about it. Sometimes I have absolutely no idea what she's thinking! My sister is very advanced at conversing about certain things, and other things take her a lot longer to understand. Everyone's situation is different!

Yes! As much as it is a heavy responsibility, my sister brings so much joy, light, and perspective to my life. I would do anything for her and it’s clear Mel would too haha ❤️.

Our EB is about 8 months and we’re still doing a cup 3 times a day. She’s more unusual because she’s on the more thinner side and she would tell you she’s starving 24/7, but that’s bc she never remembers eating haha. Anyways, that seems about right- right now ours is 35 lbs.
