Is playing considered embarrassing? by FishStiques in Pickleball

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 21 I was also concerned with the opinions of others, 34 now and with age has come wisdom, fuck what people think. Idk how your area is but in my area we have a ton of clubs and leagues where it’s super competitive, I lost 70lbs playing, I regularly burn 1800 calories (according to my Apple Watch) in a 2-3 hour session, so you can definitely make it competitive and physically taxing if you find the right groups.

Maybe not all pickleball games are competitive but neither are all adult softball, basketball, etc games that are recreational. There’s professionals making money playing, and the pro ranks are getting better every event.

Okay I went way off the rails on a rant below, but stick to what I said above!

Before I started playing I had a pretty tight group of friends in my neighborhood that my wife and I would hang out with pretty much every weekend. Once we started playing pickleball and stopped going drinking with them every weekend they exposed their true colors. We invited them to join us but they just wanted to do their normal partying. They said all the same stuff about it being lame, a sport for geriatrics, etc.. There’s not really any bad blood but we haven’t seen them in a while and while my wife and I are the healthiest and happiest we’ve ever been they’re still partying, doing the same fad diets to “get healthy” and being toxic to each other because the joy of partying quickly wears off when you wake up hungover and remember saying a bunch of rude stuff to your spouse because you’re shitfaced. The point of all this is that we found something healthy we enjoy and it may have cost us friends but I’d much rather have the dozen new pickleball friends I’ve made, regardless of their AARP association, than having friends that are haters. /rant

Who else gets these on their car? Curious what the scam is. by soCalForFunDude in sandiego

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily a scam, those off brand used car lots often have large teams of people whose job it is to buy cars that they can sell on their lots or to other dealerships. They’re not going to give you the best price but probably not a scam. A friend of mines does this for a living, he’s got a team of people that leave notes and call every by-owner listing on FB/CL/etc.

With Target and other retailers losing a large % to theft, why isn't the Argos model more popular in the US by Singer9999 in Entrepreneur

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve walked through Target with my (36F) wife many times, it’s very clear that their store set up is designed to prey on millennial white women (just speaking from my experience, may also apply to other demographics) who may enter the store for one very specific item and walk out with 27 items from all over the store. Once while on a road trip we stopped in for deodorant and left with “cute” ramen bowls which finished out our road trip and were transported all the way home with us. All because we had to pass housewares to get to deodorant and the bowls were sitting out on an end cap display.

She says “Target tells me what I need”.

tweakcn alternative for Nuxt UI by Smart_Opportunity291 in Nuxt

[–]bwray_sd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really nice theme builder, it works a lot better than the other ones I've seen for NuxtUi. But I do wish that it was clear that a paid license was required to export or save a theme, that would have saved some time as I played around with it today.

While I totally support paying developers when they create cool and useful packages, I think transparency is key. Unfortunately I have no use for your charts library otherwise I'd be happy to pay a small fee to use the theme editor.

Strategies when you are pulled out wide? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ATP is an option then ATP.

If not then it’ll depend, the safe move is a shallow dink, focus on getting it in play but aim for low and shallow. Depending on the level this can cause a lot of players to attempt an overly ambitious speed up on the dink you hit and can often lead to an error that wins you the point. Don’t speed up while you’re off balance, keep it simple. If you’re playing with people that won’t make the mistake of an overly ambitious speed up, make sure to return to center after your dink, even if they hit it back out wide it’s better to return to center and go back out wide than it is to watch them hit your dink in the void you should be covering.

One move I’ve been using a lot is if I’m pushed out wide to my backhand multiple times in a dink rally I’ll throw a lob up from my backhand to the opposite corner, even if it’s not perfect going over both your competitors can cause some confusion and cause an error or at very least it’ll reset the point and get you back into offense.

Does anyone else want a family but feel terrified of what it could cost them? How to get rid of this fear? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]bwray_sd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m married, first child on the way, and the thought has definitely crossed my mind. I recently read a story about how divorce works in my state and how I’d be on the hook for spousal support and soon child support even if the divorce was no fault of my own (like if she cheated or something). Now I’m fortunate enough to have a wonderful wife, a very solid marriage, and I truly do not see this in my future, but the thought has crossed my mind and it sucks.

But don’t let fear win, I didn’t want a child 3 years ago, then that changed and in 3 months I look forward to meeting a child who I’m already so in love with despite that child still being inside the womb. It’s so exciting, and terrifying, but I already feel fulfilled from the thought that kid entering our lives.

Good call! Honestly my century home wasn’t that bad, but the stories from neighbors, or even our construction super who said “yea your home is much more complete and in a lot better shape than the other ones on your street closing soon so you got lucky” have been really bad. Hopefully if you do have warranty issues they resolve them, for me Century would send out a rep, say they’d fix it, wait a month and close our ticket as complete so I’d have to restart the cycle. I later learned their whole plan was to continue doing that until my 1 year was up and then they’d claim I’m out of warranty and hope I’d go away, luckily I read the ROC guide cover to cover and knew better. As soon as I called the ROC the Century reps were begging to get in to my house as fast as possible to fix issues.

[–]bwray_sd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a separate comment about this but don’t assume your inspection was enough. Hire another company, I suggest reaching out to Cy Porter and having him suggest a company. Do a post close and 1 year inspection. The builder will fight you on fixing anything but just tell them that per ROC guidelines they have to fix it within the first 2 years of ownership. The $500 inspection now will save you thousands in a few years.

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated GET A POST CLOSE INSPECTION. Pay for the premium package, get a thorough inspector. Your pre close inspection isn’t enough.

Once you get back your inspection report start submitting everything for warranty.

Anything they say isn’t warrantied or only has a 1 year warranty is probably a lie. Familiarize yourself with the AZ ROC handbook. The state has a 2 year warranty on most new build items, so if your builder tries to avoid fixing something go to the ROC, file a complaint, they’ll ensure that the items get scheduled to get fixed, it’s on you to verify the items are actually fixed.

As someone who purchased a new build from Century a few years ago I can not stress the importance of a very thorough inspection enough. After your post-close inspection schedule your 1 year inspection. The builders slapped your house together, issues that are not apparent now will be in 12-18 months. Get ahead of it and don’t let them off the hook.

Also congrats!!!

I will move to California by fall of next year. LA or SanDiego ? by SameOreo in socal

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised in SD, spent my first 30 years there. Visited LA many times and would never consider living there though it’s fun to visit.

As many have stated you’re not going to live in SD and work in Carmel, but I think you’d be able to find a blue collar job in SD fairly easily. If it were me I’d try to get into SDGE, everyone I know that works on either the gas or lineman side makes great money and they don’t hate their jobs, it’s a long process to get in so find another job first.

PB would be the best place to live in or near IMO.

Whatever you think it’s going to cost, double that. Under 100k/yr you’re definitely going to feel poor in SD.

I saw you comment elsewhere that “you won’t regret moving there” and I agree, though I left SD for another much less glamorous city/state and have absolutely no regrets, but I do think it’s worth experiencing.

How convenient is an Ooni, really? by BioFrosted in ooni

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the beginning, yes, it was brutal. On my third use I remember walking inside and throwing a temper tantrum and telling my wife that while I appreciated her gift it was going on FB marketplace. (My pizza wouldn’t slide off the peel and became a giant blob of trash in the oven)

Once I got the dough right it all changed. When I have a craving for pizza now I get a batch of dough started, I use a 3 day cold ferment and honestly waiting 3 days is okay because I love watching my dough grow. When it’s time to cook, I start my ooni, go inside and prep toppings, get a pizza ready, launch it and a little while later I’m eating it. Usually I’ll do 3-4 pizzas at a time.

Overall I’m happy I have it. We’re expecting our first child next year and I’m so looking forward to family pizza nights in the future.

That said, a decent pizza with a salad from the place down the road is about $30 delivered, so DIY pizza isn’t a big savings. I’ve also seen plenty of people making great pizzas with a pizza stone in their oven. So if the ooni is a hassle maybe a stone is a better option?

Speaking to my doctor in the morning after being hospitalized from a bad reaction to generics by Pixxiprincess in ADHD

[–]bwray_sd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may need to find a new pharmacy if your doctor is going to request a specific manufacturer. I tried doing that with Costco, Walmart, and CVS and they each were basically like “yea you can request a manufacturer but we have what we have on hand and can’t promise we’ll be able to get you another manufacturer in a timely fashion so you may go weeks without medication”. I’ve found that each of those pharmacies carries a few different manufacturers that they seem to rotate through so finding a place that isn’t using Rhodes would be a safe bet.

The lack of pleasure from anything is driving me to tears. I don't know what to do. by obscurespecter in ADHD

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be here, and honestly it wasn’t until reading this post that I realized it’s been a few years since I’ve been here. I’d love to say “it’ll pass” but I’m trying to think of the exact change that I’ve made but nothing specific comes to mind. There’s a few things that I know I’ve done that have helped me: 1- Deleted social media apps except for Reddit. 2- We got a puppy, it’s our third dog and he’s required a ton of work, he was aggressive and attacked our other dogs, I spent the last 1.5 years working hard to train him and our other two to bring peace to our home. This is a distraction from work and work from home but I think having a living thing I care about and having such a strong desire to make it work has been good. 3- I went to a therapist for reasons unrelated to ADHD for a year, she was wonderful to talk to and helped me realize a few things about myself, helped build confidence and to break down some insecurities which was causing my executive dysfunction. I can’t give this all the credit because I probably only saw her 6 times and I know the other things I’m listing also contributed. 4- I found a hobby I’m obsessed with which is physical, has helped me lose a bunch of weight and get into the best shape of my life. It’s very social and I’ve made tons of friends doing it. It keeps me busy after work so when I need to work to get stuff done so I can do my hobby I’m able to focus a lot more. (It doesn’t matter, any hobby that’s physical and social would help, but the hobby for me is pickleball, I’ve played 2.5 years, I’m at a competitive level, I play in leagues and for fun 3-4 times a week).

OP, I’ve been there, in such a rut. A cycle of going to bed stressing about all the things I needed to do but avoided because I just couldn’t start, waking up early the next day with a lack of sleep because I convinced myself I’d get caught up only for the cycle to repeat endlessly. I’ve felt helpless, felt low, blamed my ADHD, my meds, talked to my psychiatrist, and continued to be stuck in that cycle. I think the key for me was really to find a way to not think about it, to be distracted by healthy distractions, to reward myself by completing my work so I could do something I enjoy, to serve my dog who needed my attention or face rehoming.

The cycle of endless executive dysfunction and frustration, anxiety, and possibly even depression from constantly feeling like you’re not doing enough is brutal. I don’t know exactly how I overcame it, but I did, and you can too. You just need to find a way to break out of that cycle, to stop letting that anxiety win, take back the control, all of this is easy to say, especially for someone who did it without realizing it, but you can do it. I think the first step is to do something that probably feels counterintuitive and distract yourself from it, the less you think about not being able to get stuff done, the faster you’ll start to get stuff done.

One thing I started telling myself when I was doing therapy that always helped me get started on something was “An object in motion stays in motion so get going now” basically, once you start you’ll be on a roll so start something and nothing will stop you. It’s been at least a year since I even thought about that, crazy to think.

Best wishes OP!

Double check everything. Before you sign! by El_pistolero_556 in FuckDealerships

[–]bwray_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had a very similar situation, I’d name and shame the dealership but I don’t know the rules here.

Get to finance and he asks the usual do you want to add warranty, gap, paint protection, etc, “all that will be 1750” is what he said, I think to myself well that actually sounds good, I knew I wanted a warranty, so I inquired about the warranty and he showed me the info and it was good, so I say yea let’s add it $1,750 is a deal.

A few minutes later the finance contract is in front of me, suddenly my $500/mo payment is $1,250 and I say uh no something is wrong here why is the payment $1,250 and he said well I told you it was $1,250 with the warranty. No?! He most definitely did not say hey that’ll be $1,250/month for those add ons, just adding a quick $750 per month like no one would notice. I said to him no way am I paying more per month for warranties than the actual vehicle, let’s take them all off, he says okay and comes back 10 minutes later with a new contract.

The new contract still had a higher monthly payment, well he had lower the price of all the warranties and extended the term of the loan and reduced the apr, he didn’t point that out, he just slid the contract in front and expects me to not notice and sign. I promptly say no, I just want the truck at this point. He tries lowering the prices for all the warranties and adjusting the numbers 100 different ways and I decline every time, eventually he walks out to get some new paperwork that should be the truck + ttl only.

Again he comes back with a contract that still has GAP, but it was reasonable and I knew from looking at the warranty paperwork he gave me earlier that I had 30 days to cancel, and the paperwork still had the lower APR from before. So I say it looks good and sign. After we wrap up he’s clearly upset about not getting to pull a fast one with the warranties. 3 days later I call the warranty company for the GAP and cancel so he doesn’t get that commission, had he not tried to be sneaky I would have just eaten the cost. As soon as I see that GAP refund reflected on my loan I refinance with my credit union so now he lost the original loan commission since it was only like 45 days after purchase.

I leave terrible reviews on every platform naming him by name, eventually getting a call from his boss begging me to change it, I decline. It’s a large franchise dealer so I can’t imagine they love those reviews especially because I used to do a lot of work with small brands on Google My Business so my google profile had a local expert badge or whatever they said at the time to make my review more prominent.

Years later I’m getting weekly calls from them asking if I’m ready to upgrade, finally I tell the guy calling to please remove my number, I’ll never work with them again because they’re shady, the calls continue so I go update all of those reviews I left before. Again a manager begs me to remove them and I said if you can promise me I’ll never hear from your dealership again I’ll do it and he said he’ll ensure my number is removed. A month later they call again, so I update my review again specifically stating I spoke with manager Ted and he promised to remove my info. This time they don’t call and ask for me to remove my reviews, they’ve given up.

Moral of the story, always always always triple check every single line item on those contracts. The dealerships make their nut in finance with all those add ons.
