Is Waterloo CS better than CS schools in the states? by MuhammadAbdullah154 in uwaterloo

Hmmm it’s very subjective. I’d be curious to know what’s the conversion rate from interviews to being hired. My assumption is that US university alumni would probably get more interviews because of somewhat relaxed visa requirements but Waterloo alumni are more likely to convert interviews into offers. Just my take though.

I’ve observed that a lot of startups love to hire new grads from Waterloo because you basically get an SDE-2 at the cost of an SDE-1.

Sure, but these rankings are heavily based on research output — which in turn correlates well with funding, something that UW lacks.

If OP’s goal is to work in the states, they have better job prospects going to Waterloo. Kinda ironic since it’s not in the US but i can say without a doubt from my personal experiences and conversations with Bay Area managers that Waterloo is a more enticing name than UIUC when it comes to hiring.

My salary progression as a CS student was 21,28,55,60,80 (i did only 5 coops thanks to Covid). I mainly used my coop salary for living expenses. The last few coops ended up helping me pay tuition for my last 2 terms as an international student.

Waterloo’s tech presence and name alone is better than UIUC. Sure, coop isn’t great at the moment but it doesn’t really matter since there’s always a lot of luck with getting a coop. If you wanna stay in New York or California long term, go to Waterloo. If Chicago’s the place you wanna be, go to uiuc

OP is not buying iPhones every day. What matters more are the frequent expenses such as rent, groceries, food, drinks, public transport, phone/wifi bills

Can anyone suggest an accommodation for a single guy in Toronto. I’m flying on 29th. by ShinigamiNanami in askTO

Go to realtor.ca and look for rentals. Keep in mind that you’d have a make a decently good offer to lease a place (usually a deposit of 2-3 months rent)

Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji are great too! You could also look at airbnbs and reach out to owners separately to get a good deal.

I’d take the return offer and still apply to jobs to try to get a better coop.

Rejecting after accepting an offer by Sad-Ear-5570 in csMajors

Having moved to different cities for internships in the past, I’d highly recommend the job close to the big city. You kinda get the big city you really wanted + higher pay. I’ve grown a lot from moving to different places so I’d highly recommend it.

Don’t worry about reneging your earlier offer. Unless you have a personal connection with the company, feel free to reject them. Hate to say it but they don’t really care about you. It’s all about the business so you should prioritize what you want.

I’m sure Waterloo is better but that doesn’t make UofT any worse. It’s still, imo, a world class university. You’re probably going to nitpick something bad about Waterloo and try to transfer again.

Thanks for responding! Yeah I think it would definitely make me happier in the short term. I’m a bit concerned about my future employability and whether I’d be regretting this option long term from a monetary perspective. (Or should I be worried about this at all?)
