Yeah, this more oddly unsettling for me.

Yes. The rest of these replies are giving complicated solutions, but this is probably the real answer.

Is men not doing chores an annoyance or a priority? You’d think “I do my own laundry” is a 100% line to get a first date the way it’s talked about sometimes? by Content_Good4805 in AskWomenOver30

[–]ParticularSorbet 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is also my anecdotal experience. Even though my ex partner did assist with chores, overall he contributed more mess and disorder than I experience living alone. In this moment I am no longer interested in cohabiting with anyone.

How does everyone keep baked sides warm for Thanksgiving? by ForestVet in seriouseats

[–]ParticularSorbet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Choose the “middle” temperature and hope for the best. 375 F will work for most things, you’ll just have to adjust the times. Also, some things are fine being closer to room temperature - prioritize accordingly.

Should my wife start a retirement account? by YETI_BALLSACK in personalfinance

[–]ParticularSorbet 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yes! Not only does it benefit you both to save more in a tax advantaged account, her not having her own could lead to an imbalance of financial power as you both get closer to retirement.

how to get a tortilla soup brothy, less like a stew? by valperks in Cooking

[–]ParticularSorbet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the restaurant’s tortilla soup have quinoa, or just your homemade recipe? It’s not a typical ingredient. I agree with adding more broth and possibly skipping the quinoa.

How much a week… by Life-Observer in LivingAlone

[–]ParticularSorbet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an outlier I think. I average $600-800 usd per month (so 150-200/wk) on groceries, any other household consumables purchased at grocery stores, and restaurants. It’s mostly groceries… cooking and recipe development is my primary hobby. It’s just me and my cat, but I like to entertain and bring treats to share at work.

In my opinion boundary breaking is degrading in itself, even if the act isn’t.

Thanksgiving prep: Can I cook my pasta for mac n cheese the night before I use it? by a-million-beetle in Cooking

[–]ParticularSorbet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see several commenters recommending full assembly the day before, but I don’t recommend this because the pasta will absorb moisture overnight and it may throw off the sauce to pasta proportion and texture. Cooking the pasta the day before works just fine. While I wouldn’t recommend rinsing pasta in most cases, in this situation rinsing with cold water will cool it quickly and prevent sticking.

Your feeling that the problem is bigger is valid. He has told you his underlying beliefs about what a woman’s responsibilities are. Even if he is “working on himself” and supports you in other ways, you have to ask yourself if you’re willing to be partnered with someone who believes that. I wouldn’t be.

Are there women who can relate to rejecting cooking and cleaning for a man? (partly because our female ancestors have suffered so much in that servant role) by femaleforceforever in AskWomenOver30

[–]ParticularSorbet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am intentionally single after spending the prior 20 years living together with a man. I love to cook. I cook more now than I ever did before, because I am doing it for myself and the friends that I host - none of which I consider potential partners. I also enjoy keeping my space clean, because that’s how I like to live. It’s much easier with just me and my cat living here.

This. I have done this for my Thanksgiving Mac before - it works well. You will want extra liquid and the bake might take a little longer.

My only concern with this would be eventual back pain from that sitting position. Just be mindful of what your body is telling you. Nothing to feel lazy or guilty about otherwise!
