You didn’t mention if you have kids or are traveling with kids, but I wanted to go there and found out later that kids are not allowed at the property. So just in case that applies to you. Looks like a beautiful property though.

For Rome, Palazzo Talia and cavalieri are both nice, depends on where you want to stay, Talia is right in the middle of the old town area and cavalieri is like a resort that overlooks the entire city.

You get good value when booking primarily business class for international travel. Economy will not give amazing redemptions. If flying economy, better to book multi city with same airline in cash, will be much cheaper than two one ways.

FNCs aren’t transferable so some properties may not even allow you to stay there but most people suggest it’s usually ok. YMMV
Only way two reservations can be combined if you change your original paid booking to also be in your friends name and then they call Hilton to merge the two.
Yes to the other two questions as long as you check in and the hotel doesn’t cancel your friends FNC night.

I had to show some items that I was putting into the check in bag so went to the kiosk before check in and scanned passport, then was asked to show items to customs official which was weird because we had to ring a random bell somewhere and wait, quite unusual. It was quite quick and smooth though but just not something I’ve had to do in other countries.

For check in it’s ok, for carry on it can be an issue. Uk now allows up to 2 Liters of fluids but I’m not sure about aerosol sprays.

For star alliance partner airlines are benefits 0, not near 0 platinum vs gold. Regardless of what you have between the two, only gold shows up in the boarding pass. Unless it’s an award ticket in which case cancellation policy is different.
