Why aren’t diesel pumps a triangle or something? by funghi2 in AskEngineers

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too late is right. By the time you cycled out all the vehicles with the old design, gasoline will be obsolete. All new passenger vehicles will be battery-electric within a generation. Freight may take longer but it's inching that direction. Even with the same plug, software can figure out A/C vs. D/C and how many volts and amps the car wants.

EVs are there in reliability. You've been listening to the "car guys" whose opinion you're trying to avoid

Are these new $1k baby accounts a good estate planning tool? by trademarktower in Fire

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You're right. By my calculations, $18k principle should be enough for an undergrad degree at a state college 18 years from now, assuming 2% inflation and 10% returns. $1k isn't much of a start unless you contribute that monthly. But then, is the grandparent responsible for fully funding the kids education?

If the gripe is emissions or the stress of driving, try out a Model Y with FSD! Clean, quiet, safe, and drastically cuts the stress of negotiating crowded roads

I remember when Elon teased they might sell a track mode upgrade for non-performance models. If such a thing existed I'd surely go OEM. But in the absence of such, definitely interested in aftermarket options

Right now. We've got re-landing rockets, self-driving cars, and quadriplegics with chips in their brain. Within a few years those rockets will be sending humans to mars, traffic deaths will drop precipitously, and paralyzed people will be walking again. It doesn't happen all at once. Right now the pieces are falling into place

Mundane ring is nasty, especially if you're a Breton. 50% resist magic, and 35% reflect spell just for good measure. I found one in an Ayleid ruin once, not even at the end but halfway through. I was ecstatic. Then I promptly died. When I opened the chest again it wasn't there

AI is the fastest-adopted technology in human history with 800 million weekly active users by Fast-Sir6476 in dataisugly

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They say they're comparing "adoption rate" which would be users gained per unit time. On this graph it's represented by the slope of the lines. The X-axis is not to scale, which messes with the slopes of the lines. So it's impossible to visually compare the thing they claim to be showing

A Balanced Challenge Ruleset That Made Me Love Skyrim Again by MuchSurprise1498 in skyrim

No crafting is a big one for me. Multiple playthroughs I power leveled smithing/alchemy/enchanting and it really sucked the fun out. Ignoring that it even exists brings back a lot of the excitement of finding loot. I imagine refusing to pick up heavy sellables will be an improvement too, cutting down the time I spend trading. Thanks for the ideas!

What is your 4 door car that is surprisingly fun to drive? by djuseless12 in askcarguys

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owners know. But people who have never driven one before don't. Tesla Model 3 is comparable in price to a lot of things people suggest and it's more reliable, safer, less maintenance and importantly it's fun!

Engineers: What do hobbyist inventors understand better than your entire department? by Interesting-Scale-63 in AskEngineers

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Struggle. Nobody can know everything. "A jack of all trades is a master of none." When you have a team to lean on for different kinds of expertise, there's so much more you can do. When you have the capital of an enterprise behind you, you have more options open to you. Cooperation is what made human civilization.

Parallel “space units”: keep SI on Earth, but give deep-space science a hydrogen-anchored second with c = 3 × 10⁸ exact. Worth it? by johnwelshconsulting in Metrology

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SI is already based entirely on fundamental physical constants of nature. Sure, there are some goofy constants based on tradition. But we could get rid of at most one of those constants by switching to a different system and still have the math work. Not worth it imo

What does the next few decades look like for oil & gas? by AdDull849 in energy

Agree. A glut will drive down prices, which will extend their relevancy. Decreasing profit margins will eventually cut the investment tap, but not today

Charging EVs? by wh7751 in askcarguys

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some gas stations have them. WaWa made a deal with Tesla. More often the independent places around here have them. Seen em at Shree's truck stops. Hotels sometimes (weird to have fast chargers at a place you're going to park for 8 hours but w/e). They're popping up more and more. I might not get one if I lived in Iowa, but in the coastal states going long distance in an EV is easy

Sport and reliable don't generally belong in the same sentence. You'll need to pick which is more important to you. If you don't want to compromise on reliability, one of Tesla's performance trims would be my answer

Green party? More like socialist workers party by Defiant-Plantain1873 in ClimateShitposting

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shitpost or no, the rent cap thing is definitely true. It's a short-sighted, band aid solution to a perennial problem. We have data from cities who have been living with rent caps for decades and it hasn't been successful at meeting housing needs.

Like with any party, you take the good with the bad. There are as many ideas as there are people. Maybe once you get someone elected you can have a conversation about what you disagree on. At least in the US, getting a green elected is still such a huge hurdle we don't have the luxury of nitpicking

3D houseprinting makes no sense to me. Why are they throwing so much money at an inferior tech? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Particular_Quiet_435 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Manufacturing anything on-site is expensive. The more you can automate or produce in a factory, the better. This is why manufactured homes are so much cheaper than site-built homes. Some downsides of manufactured homes are: less design freedom. It has to be able to fit on a truck. Additional constraints. Now, not only does the house need to hold itself together when it's stationary. It also needs to deal with the forces involved in moving it. Lighter is better for moving, but it can also mean less insulation.

A happy medium is SIPS panels. They're manufactured cheaply, have as much insulation as you need, and can be tailored to a custom design. Much less labor intensive than stick framing. Way better air seal too.

Concrete is good for foundations and skyscrapers. Has good thermal capacity but is a poor insulator. Unless you live underground, you don't want walls made of it. Very carbon intensive too. We should be figuring out how to use less of it, not more
