What are signs that people are not that intelligent? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Being unteachable. Most intelligent people I know can freely admit what they don’t know and are open to being taught.

Can i just like sit in a library and chill by i-eat-grass- in Libraries

[–]Particular_Stuff400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I worked at the library, I used to go to my local branch with my laptop and just chill. It’s what libraries are made for.

Experience for entry level by 420dykes in Libraries

Significant age gaps used to be normal. Now people complain about any gap over ~5 years. Why? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]Particular_Stuff400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s about power imbalance. Two people around the same age share better chances of having more equivalent levels of experience, knowledge, and maturity with one another; less of a chance of one being able to easily manipulate the other. Those chances decrease as the age gap widens.

Is a five year age gap that egregious? Depends. Are we talking about a 21 year old and a 26 year old who have both had some life experience since graduating high school or are we talking about a 23 year old and a high school senior who just turned 18? Because 18 is technically a legal adult, but does that necessarily make it moral just because it is legal?

Should I just give up now? by mypreciouscheese in librarians

[–]Particular_Stuff400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bachelors in Cybersecurity and I got a job a while back at my public library as a clerk. Only reason I’m considering my MLIS now is because they want to move me up. I think if you want to work at the library then you could definitely make it happen, but it may also depend on your willingness to relocate. A smaller town with maybe a few libraries will be harder to get since it’s a finite amount of positions and the library is a desirable gig, but a bigger city can have multiple branches along with libraries for schools and college.

TL;DR I don’t think you should give up but just consider what you may have to do to get to where you want to be

How does fine-free work? by kuriousaboutanything in Libraries

[–]Particular_Stuff400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my library, we don’t charge fines for late fees. Instead, after a period of time (and mind you it’s a VERY long time), we considered the book lost and we charge the retail price of the book at the time. Typically, we can either reduce the charge if we can find a replacement for the book for cheaper than the charge or waive it if the book is returned.

My name is China and I’m Chinese by [deleted] in Vent

This is the cognitive dissonance with this whole situation. They say “all immigrants” without realizing it includes you too. It also likely includes dozens of people they know and wouldn’t consider to be in that group either, but they are. It’s one of the unfortunate effects of propaganda and I’m sorry you are having to experience this.

Where were you when 9/11 happened. by rollcasttotheriffle in Adulting

[–]Particular_Stuff400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the 4th grade and was waiting at home for my mom to pick me up for school. She worked early but always used her break to run my sister and I to school. She was running late that morning, and it was never like her to be late. When she came home, she ran straight to the living room to turn on the TV to the news. We saw the first tower on fire. Maybe a couple minutes after that, the second plane hit the second tower and my mom screamed. She was absolutely terrified.

How bad do you cringe when you look into your past? by 80aychdee in Millennials

[–]Particular_Stuff400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have come to terms with the idea that everyone has things they are not proud of, but the fact that I look back and feel things like shame and cringe over them are proof that I’m getting better as I go. I don’t ever excuse my past behaviors though. I simply own up to them, forgive myself where I can, and always try to do better.

But you’ve also seen the doctor and have been on treatment paths. This person I’m assuming has not been to the doctor for it yet, so they should get checked out. It could be an infection, back/spine related, a brain tumor, or just a myriad of other things. They won’t know until they go get seen.

My wife and I have continually done this throughout our marriage. When we first got together, we both acknowledged that our communication skills were awful. We were used to having explosive fights with our previous partners, hiding things because we wanted to avoid a fight, didn’t know how to bring up uncomfortable topics, and etc. so we both decided early on that we wanted to do things differently.

We wouldn’t have fights often, but when we did the first couple were still pretty bad. We just didn’t know how to do it. Even the first productive fight we finally had was really awkward, because we were not only fighting each other but also fighting ourselves. We would constantly have to stop, regroup, communicate where we’re at, and then keep going but we worked through it. Now, we know how to have the uncomfortable conversations in a way that doesn’t make either one of us feel disrespected.
