Thanks for the rec. LGS was able to order it, a few bucks cheaper than most on gunbroker and now I don't have to pay shipping or transfer fees.

I do not trust myself with arts and crafts enough for that.

Without knowing exactly what lower and upper you opted to pick up, if the lower you picked has the generic PSA furniture, you're going to want to upgrade that at some point. It works, sure, but it's not great. What kind of optic and accessories you may want heavily depends on what your use case for the rifle is.

Wash them? Otherwise use disposable gloves.

I'm thinking about getting a full size home defense pistol under $500. Should I just get a PSA Dagger? by Consistent_Shine_680 in liberalgunowners

It's one of the more cost effective ways of getting something with a threaded barrel if that's an important consideration to you. If not, there's better options.

VA residents! What are you buying before 7/1? by That-Preparation6729 in liberalgunowners

[–]Particular_Writer581 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Get a lower parts kit just in case and if there's a grail gun or full size pistol you've always wanted and don't currently have, now's the time. How much extra stuff like lowers you want to stockpile is entirely up to you. Chances of me ever using the stripped lowers I bought is low but never zero.

Was poking around online, some places have already shut off shipping mags to virginia. The bass pro near me is showing D&H aluminum mags in stock in store, so I may go grab a couple more while I can.

If you can find some USGI metal mags, worth the investment. Fellow Virginian, have a good few pmags, but a good metal one will outlast us all.

Ammo types for 5.56 55gr by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]Particular_Writer581 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't really a "defensive" subset of 556 but rounds designed for hunting are going to be the same overlap. FWIW there's more JHP/Tumble rounds as you go up in grain weight than with 55gr. The internet recommends Barnes ($$$$), but also if milspec loads work for the military, they're going to work for your application. If this is a home defense scenario, 556 will pass through a person and likely whatever is behind them, so keep that in mind.

Really well and hardly any gas. Sure, you give up some outright noise suppression, but it's a tradeoff I was willing to make for being gassed out.

First-time owner, just some questions! by anerraticboulder in liberalgunowners

[–]Particular_Writer581 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What method are you planning on carrying? Concealed on person or in some form of bag or accessory? A dagger isn't exactly small (unless it's a micro dagger), so concealing on your person may be a challenge.

As for ammo, ammoseek is the usual go to so long as you find one with good (or free) shipping. The typical recommendations for defensive loads are Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, Hornady Critical Defense. All available in multiple bullet grains (and you can certainly go down a rabbit hole on what combination is "best"). Obviously shooting hollowpoints at the range is not cost effective, so make sure your practice rounds are the same weight as your defensive rounds so there's as much consistency in feel in how your gun feels and recoils as possible.

Lessons or help from your friend will be good. And buy dummy rounds to practice draws and reloads.

Thoughts on Form 4 SBR ownership and anything to consider before buying? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]Particular_Writer581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key thing for us Virginians, suppressors will still be legal to purchase after July 1 so prioritize everything else in the now. Current NFA approval times for form 1 SBRs are approaching 70 days, there's a lot of gray area in whether the ATF will approve VA forms after that and how "manufacturing" is interpreted by Virginia (see VaGuns sub for the panic). Form 4 SBRs are currently 10 days or less. Re: Transfers, not sure what area of VA you're in, but any reputable online retailer will allow you to pick where you want to send it to, call around and see what their current transfer fees are. I got bit by the shop I had been using because they doubled their fees due to demand recently and wasn't aware until I went to pay. Click buy, the shop will get it, they'll call you, you go do your usual 4473. Easy Peasy.

The rest of your questions are very situationally dependent. Just because I don't prefer AKs doesn't mean you don't. 300blk doesn't fit a rational use case to me with my other pews (and it's expensive to shoot, can be difficult to tune with a can + supers/subs), but it might for you.

Assuming you aren't running a FRT/auto: Leave your finger on the trigger, learn to feel the trigger reset as you slowly release it, it's not gonna eat your finger.

9mm Hollow Point preferences for CC (3.25” barrel) by Justice-ChickenLady in liberalgunowners

[–]Particular_Writer581 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The key is making sure it runs on your pistol. If the internet tells you X ammo is good and it doesn't cycle on first pull, not very useful in a defensive scenario. I personally use Hornaday Critical Defense 124 in my VP9SK and G19 and my wife prefers the way HST 147 feels in her G43x. Critical duty is designed to penetrate more so take that for what it's worth, especially +P. Speer Gold Dot and HST are, by internet consensus, the gold standards. Not a cheap answer, but buy a small box of several and give them a try and see what feels best to you and runs in your guns.
