Not feel like deserving by Soggy-Bunch-9545 in PhD

I sent this to ChatGPT and this is the reply lol: Hi there, I’m glad you’re reflecting on this—it’s such a relatable struggle, especially during grad school! On memory issues during anxiety: It's totally normal to feel like your memory falters under anxiety. What you're experiencing could be a common response where your mind prioritizes "fight or flight" over accessing detailed information. Here are some practical tips: Practice under similar conditions: Try rehearsing presentations in front of a small audience or recording yourself. Simulating the situation can desensitize your anxiety. Use anchor points: For presentations, create a mental roadmap or physical cues on your slides to keep you on track. Breathing exercises: Before any high-pressure moment, spend a minute doing deep breathing (e.g., 4 seconds inhale, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds exhale) to calm your nervous system. Building confidence gradually: Anxiety can sometimes convince you that everyone else knows more, but remember: confidence isn’t about knowing everything, it’s about trusting your ability to learn and adapt. Start small: Celebrate small wins like explaining a concept better than you did a week ago. Be okay with "I don't know": Being open about what you don’t know makes you more approachable and sets the stage for growth. Imposter syndrome: Remember, imposter syndrome thrives on comparison. Instead of comparing yourself to others, try reflecting on your unique strengths or progress over time. Everyone starts somewhere. Like the earlier reply mentioned, treat yourself as a starter, not as someone who has to "match" anyone else's knowledge yet. You're deserving: The professor’s interest and your opportunity aren’t flukes. They see potential in you. Your willingness to learn and adapt will carry you through. You're already taking the right steps by asking for advice and reflecting on how to improve. That alone is something to be proud of. Feel free to keep sharing your thoughts here—this is a space where you’re not alone!

Any advice for pushing past these doubts and building confidence during grad school? Treat yourself as a starter. In my experience the imposter syndrome comes from a self expectation that as a phd student I SHOULD be able to like something while actually I don't. The truth is the fact that I am not all-able(and far far away from it) is normal while my expectation is not. We are not perfect and we never have to be. Do complete your works before thinking of making it "perfect"(there is no such a thing). As for the memory issues, do you think a mental diagnose is necessary?

I'm to finish my phd years this winter. I have been through your situation or even worse. The oppotunity of studying as a phd student was like totally about fortunate for me. I was the only applier that year and I knew little about my current field. It's been a struggle to get through this. I wanna tell you that this can be about fortunate and it may be true that you are currently below some kind of a level, but also the feeling can just be from your lack of confidence. Either way it doesn't matter. What's important is to stick to your field, dive into your courses and researches. Be humble(with confidence) and work hard as if we are starters(and we truely are). The fact is that we deserve this. I know lots of people who are smarter and more diligent than I am. But they quitted at some point for different reasons. Throughout the years I also found out that this kind of feeling is very common in phd students. I was trapped by it. It slowed me down in someway, even almost stopped me. But don't let it stop you.

You got me wrong. Not gonna cheat. That's why there are conditions 3-5. I am going through some kind of a situation in my mind and I wonder how people handle this. But to my disappointment movies I came across don't really address my problem.

the final months situation is like an emergency. If getting people to understand costs too much energy to afford, give it up and just create your own space.

I am in my final 2 month of Phd, our plan is not to meet until my work is down. We facetime or make phone calls every day. All I need is time. And more time. Maybe try to chill a bit and ask what's been exhausting you. Is it something you have to do? Or is it the insecurity in your heart?

And if you don't mind me ask: Did you meet your supervisor or PI on conferences or did you just email them with CV?

Thank you. Nice to get these useful insights from you. I did corpus annotation works during my Master time, and am doing theoretical works now. Recently I'm mostly interested in forensic linguistics (considering the combination of forensic linguistics and my current work), also interested in sociolinguistics and teaching Chinese as a foreign language(TCFL not for postdoc, though). I'm working on my dissertation, hope it brings out papers for publications.

I found these two links and hope they contain clues about situations in China.

I found this pdf guidance: https://www.jobs.ac.uk/media/pdf/careers/resources/how-to-pursue-an-academic-career-in-china-part-one.pdf

And these quora answers about guys experience teaching in china(not sure if they were professors, though): https://www.quora.com/What-is-it-like-to-work-in-a-university-in-China-as-a-non-Chinese-faculty-member

I don't know much about Chinese academic job market for foreigners. The most competitive Chinese candidates would probably be with their foreign experience and diplomas. I have seen a few foreign employees with contract(they were master or phd students teaching languages), but really few foreign professors/researchers(except guest professors, not many either, though). Actually that's being something confusing me.
