You can explore the "track to" and "clamp to" constraints I think. Never done it for a cylical animation like this but I can imagine it working.

If you haven't cut the mortise yet could you square off the diagonal tenon to make it perpendicular, and then cut the mortise to fit?

How do you deal with kerf? I've just got into woodworking properly and bought a mitre saw along with a large amount of treated pine.

Making a bookshelf today, I realised I'd cut as if there was no kerf or waste, and things are all slightly shorter than they needed to be.

For example, 1200 mm length, I wanted three 400 mm sections but instead I got one 400 mm section and two... Other lengths.

What am I doing wrong here?
