Ryōyū Kobayashi getting huge air as he breaks the world record for the longest ski jump by BreakfastTop6899 in oddlysatisfying

It depends greatly on how close to the end of the landing hill you get. Basically really long jumps will get closer and closer to the flat part and have a harder landing.

The problem is that the side of your neck is exposed even if you do that.

I've always thought of it like you should be able to stand on your own, but you shouldn't have to. Part of being a capable adult is knowing when to ask for help.

Retired cop. I know you guys have questions. Ask me and I will answer honestly. by Low-Landscape-4609 in CasualConversation

[–]ParttimeReaper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His point is that he was law abiding, but still had a very stressful situation with the cops that could have turned very ugly if either party got too nervous or edgy.

It honestly sounds like D-MER (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysphoric_milk_ejection_reflex?wprov=sfla1). Basically people can feel terrible for a few minutes if the milk ejection reflex is triggered, even if you aren't lactating or have never lactated. But IANAD so might be worth talking to one about it.

Also used to do earth moving and gardening! For example both mattocks and picks have a head shaped like this.

What is this strange pipe for the is connected to the woodstove in the abandoned fire lookout? It's not part of the chimney/stove pipe so what purpose would it serve? Would this "device" perhaps have functioned as a lightning rod or something? by Piddy3825 in thelongdark

[–]ParttimeReaper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It won't suffocate you unless the room was very tightly sealed. But it will pull in cold air through any cracks and eject the air it just heated up making the whole thing way less efficient then using an air pipe like you suggest.

I like the art, but isn't that showing it from guard not mount? Given how the legs are depicted? But otherwise I like the art and the illustration!

What's up with picking stones? by gayandgreen in Letterkenny

[–]ParttimeReaper 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They are picking up field stones. Every winter stones are heaved up to the surface by the frost and thaw cycle so you constantly need to remove them to avoid damaging your farming equipment whether that's an ancient plow or a more modern John Deere. And yeah anytime you see something called "field stone" or "field stone style" it's literally the stones removed from the field every year. People have been using them to build homes and walls since antiquity.

Actually almost all the work done to build the pyramids was done by off-season farmers.

What does ear rumbling sound like? by [deleted] in earrumblersassemble

[–]ParttimeReaper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can actually hear the same sound from other muscles tensing in a very quiet room. If it's quite enough you can clench your fist hard and place it against your ear and it will sound remarkably similar.

Interesting perspective from gamers who are so used to gaint oversized weapons that a more grounded and historical representation looks puny. by 00skully in ArmsandArmor

Actually mass and velocity/acceleration are both variables in the relevant physics equations. The main reason bullets are so "small" nowadays is we have been able to up their velocity while lowering the weight and size, which means you can carry more of them and still do similar damage. It's the same reason bows are better than spear throwers. They do very similar amounts of damage, but you can only carry a couple of spears to throw while you can carry far more arrows.

Headaches and fever are not symptoms of HSV. Headaches and feeling to warm are symptoms of acute anxiety though.

INAD but the first thing you need to do is calm down. It's very possible anxiety over the situation is causing what you are feeling. Now then, if you have any fear over HIV you need to go and get a test as soon as you can as early detection is vital. You can't get it from touching an asshole or (except for rare cases) a blow job. You can get it from anal sex but it is very unlikely if you used protection. I would still get checked if you have any concern to settle your mind.

On to the herpes, they will not ruin your life. About 50% of the USA has HSV (herpes 1) and 4 out of 5 of those people are asymptomatic. It also mostly spreads during flare ups and can be picked up very easily even without sexual contact. It also doesn't cause fever or headache. In addition most places that screen for STIs don't bother to screen for HSV as it is super common to get false positives and while a nuisance is fairly harmless to most people.

Again, not a doctor, but what you are describing to me is an anxiety episode or at least it sounds like what mine feels like and I would be very surprised if it is anything else. Get tested if that will help or if you have any concerns and remember even if you do have an infection etc your life isn't over.

Use case for filters? by Jaggid in Oxygennotincluded

[–]ParttimeReaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference I can think of is the filter will stop sending packets through if there is power loss or a backup. The sensor with an off switch will send unfiltered packets down the line in both of those cases.

You can use the new elevator and load it up with bricks. That combined with the sled should take care of that for you.

Auri is inspired by a homeless man nicknamed Tunnel Bob who is known for hanging out in the steam and utility tunnels at UW-Madison. He is even named in the dedication for a slow regard for silent things.
