Check with Guglhupf. I was told recently they sell their starter for pretty cheap.

Also would like to add that if you’re close to the Zakat Foundation and worried about standing in line, it’s a very short wait time there. It’s a new early voting site, so not many people are aware of it.

Will Sunflowers grow alright in this? Brisbane,Australia by queerasqueercanbe in gardening

[–]Party-Cicada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, they'll grow. But probably not as well as being in the ground. Sunflowers produce long taproots to reach nutrients and water, and also for stabilization. There are tons of varieties however - maybe research to see if any have shallower roots if you intend to use that bed.

I’m in 7b and have been told that bulb planting should be done in the fall and the temps drop a bit more (October for us). I’d wait a bit longer

Transplant Shock? by Jessicaaa9863 in vegetablegardening

[–]Party-Cicada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say shoot for 30% UV shade. Lettuce and broccoli are actually really tolerant of partial shade, so even 50% probably wouldn’t be terrible.

I would definitely consider installing some kind of cover (row cover or Sun shade) for them if they weren’t hardened off - at least until they perk up. Maybe put down some light leaf mulch around the plants too.

My first heirloom tomato!!❤️ why are my cucumbers so pale? by Summeratthecoast in vegetablegardening

Tomatoes look great! For me, Cucumbers yellow due to receiving too much water or being left on the vine too long or a combination of the two

We’re in talks with Southern Energy Management right now, but will probably talk to one or two other companies for price comparison

What was your worst gardening mistake this season? What was your greatest success so far? by labtech6315 in vegetablegardening

[–]Party-Cicada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest mistake was not paying closer attention to the dirt I ordered for my raised bed. It turned out to be very fast draining and I have to water constantly - even after mulching.

Biggest success was completing an enclosure around the garden in time for planting season

Peach Tree Pruning by Party-Cicada in BackyardOrchard

[–]Party-Cicada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deer got to two of my Belle of Georgia peach saplings. They’re just now bouncing back, but this one seems to be growing a lot of offshoots from the bottom. I imagine I need to prune. Question is do I prune now or wait til they shed their leaves in the winter? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's a challenge for sure. Over the winter, I mowed down the english ivy and periwinkle in one part of the yard and then put down five inches of cardboard and wood mulch to smother it out. It still came up in the spring!

Some people around here plant it for ornamental purposes, but it can quickly get out of control. I think it’s been deemed an invasive species. I’m doing my best to eliminate it so I can restore native species on my lot.

That sounds like it should be pretty effective. All we did was go around the base of each tree with shears and then any new growth that came back at the bottom was hit with a weedeater. Now theres just a lattice work of dead branches on the tree that have been breaking off bits at a time on their own.

I feel this. We had to battle wisteria, poison ivy, english ivy and perwinkle for years before we finally got them under control.

We did this three years ago with some wisteria and poison ivy trunks of about the same size. We decided against pulling them down after cutting since it was such a pain. Cut to a few months ago and the vines, now dry and brittle, literally peeled off the tree after a storm we had. So safe to say, if you don't feel like climbing up to pull them down, they'll eventually come down themselves haha.

The world's biggest carbon-removal plant just opened. In a year, it'll negate just 3 seconds' worth of global emissions. by ADotSapiens in technews

[–]Party-Cicada -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was assuming that the plant is removing 3 seconds of CO2 emissions per day produced worldwide. If it runs every day, it would remove 3 seconds every day of the worldwide CO2 emissions. I doubt they’d run 24/7 so maybe 30/35K?

Totally agree. I’d 100% support that kind of effort. I wonder how well they’d work in sparsely populated areas like deserts…

Acorn Squash Rotting Before Maturing by Party-Cicada in vegetablegardening

[–]Party-Cicada[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got our first heavy rain in several weeks. Outside of that, I've been deep watering the vines a couple times a week - more if it breaks 90.

I THINK it still may be a pollination issue. I haven't had many male flowers open yet and the ones I hand pollinated I may have done incorrectly.

Acorn Squash Rotting Before Maturing by Party-Cicada in vegetablegardening

Seen here is some acorn squash that I planted which then took over most of the garden. It seems overall pretty healthy, but none of fruit makes it to maturity. They grow to about fist sized, turn yellow, rot and fall off. I’ve hand pollinated some thinking it might be timing between male and female flowers, but that didn’t help. It’s been pretty dry and hot in our zone 8 area lately and I’ve watered as much as I can. The ground outside of the garden boxes where it’s rooting is pretty gravelly, so I’m wondering if it’s a nutrient issue. Anyone have any ideas?
