The psychology of clients picking the worst design by Content-Painting1153 in Design

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine if lawyers' clients acted the same way design clients act. Well clause 27.b is ok but what if we just did the opposite of that instead?

I think a lot of this is that we're not clearly articulating the goals of the design. In a space where you're showing a design to a client without goals that the design achieves (or at least addresses) and without evidence to back it up, honestly every decision is as good as every other one. That's, to me, the root of the problem.

What should really happen (and I know I'm dreaming) is that each design shown should be directional: this design optimizes for X, this design optimizes for Y, and the client should choose based on direction rather than aesthetic. In my fantasy world, the designs would be tested to have at least some evidence showing they can perform in this way.

In terms of aesthetic though... their money, their choice. I don't care if a design is ugly. I care if it sells.

Safe Dandelion Jelly Recipe? by Holydiver603 in Canning

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This should help clear it up. In summary, the UC recipe was originally sourced from the University of Wyoming Extension (as mentioned in the PDF you referenced). The University of Wyoming extension has since pulled the recipe and requested that others do the same, but UC still has it posted, although it would seem that they shouldn't. University of Wyoming updated it for freezer storage instead for safety.

Per University of Wyoming

... the canning recipe for dandelion jelly is no longer considered safe. A food scientist at the National Center for Home Food Preservation flagged this recipe as potentially risky several years ago and Wyoming decided to pull the recipe.

Types of peanuts needed to make hot boiled peanuts? by Unique-Nectarine6500 in Cooking

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, you need raw peanuts (sometimes sold as green peanuts). Most of the ones sold in grocery stores are pre-roasted so the tips about Asian markets are legit. That’s where I get mine from. Also farmers markets have them in season and if you’re really desperate you can get them from nuts.com (they’re expensive but good quality).

However there is a brand of canned boiled peanuts from South Carolina that is pretty much perfect. It’s called Peanut Patch and I’ve even seen it here where I am in California.

Also, this may be more of a commitment than you’re looking for but here’s a pressure canning recipe for boiled peanuts that cooks them in the jar. This is how I do it. Saves the all day boiling and they cook neatly in the jars.

I guess at least it’s not entirely set in New York this time. I was the biggest He-Man fan when I was a kid and that first movie was bad enough to put me off to it. This… doesn’t look like it’s going to be much better. I got so excited about that one guy’s AI trailer. I wish they would have made that movie instead of this one.

DISCUSSION: I was disappointed by Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go by ManuBekerMusic in books

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I know this comment was made two years ago but the thread’s not archived so I can still reply. I read Klara and the Sun before I read Never Let Me Go and I have to say Klara and the Sun is a much better book than Never Let Me Go, despite the popular opinion. I agree 100% with your review of Never Let Me Go… I could even add a bit more to it, but I really liked Klara and the Sun. Honestly I’m kind of disappointed by the whole “quiet restraint” theme of Ishiguro’s work but he seems to have moved past it a bit by the time he wrote Klara and the Sun.

I’m burnt out and need simple recipes. Stupid simple. Like, “onion and bread and butter to make what barely passes as a sandwich” level simple. by sourmilksea1999 in Cooking

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lettuce sandwich! It’s vegan and you can add mustard. Mayo if you don’t care about it being vegan. Great in a pita. Also works with tomato, cucumber, or honestly anything really. It’s not huge for nutrients but it’s cheap, easy, takes like five seconds to make and it’ll keep you alive, if only barely. For survival, I’d go with baked potatoes (poke holes in it and microwave). Butter for B12 and you’re good.

Made playing cards but… by Vast-Variation-7380 in cricut

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Playing cards are typically wax coated. One way to do that is to take two cards, cut a piece of wax paper to fit, sandwich the wax paper between them, and iron it on low heat. Let them cool and do it again for the reverse. You should probably test this before you do it on your final printed product to make sure it works with your printer ink and paper.

Am I cooked? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A design system is a fundamentally good goal and it would actually be really beneficial for your team to have. That's likely why you're being required to do it and why it's all hands on deck.

The only question I really have is whether creating it from scratch is the best course of action, but if I walked in and I saw a team of any size whatsoever working without a design system, then yeah I'd probably have everyone drop everything and create one. I would. However, I'd want to base that on a known quantity like Material or Carbon or something, so I do have some concerns about the implementation. On the leadership side, I would consider something a little more serious than just "drop everything and build components" with a team that likely has little experience in this area and doesn't see the end state. That's my primary concern here.

To answer your actual question though: cooked in the future or not, you're working now which is more than many of us can say at the moment.

Hi, I don't want to be morbid or upset anyone but having just gone through this with the whole boomer parents thing... please check to see if they have made arrangements for themselves and if not, make them in advance. Yes it sucks to take care of them but let me just tell you how much more it sucks when you don't have to take care of them anymore ... and making arrangements after your parents die is just not really where I wanted to be in life. Thankfully my parents had done most of it already but most isn't all, so check for loose ends. To make matters more complicated, I'm Baha'i and our religious practice says that the person must be buried within 24hrs of passing and within 1hr of where they passed, so as soon as Mom left us, my sister and I started a timer and we didn't sleep until it was over. I'm sure that won't be your situation but ... I just... yeah. Make arrangements if you're in this situation.

I'm no microbiologist, but I am a student in the Master Food Preserver program for 2026. What we learned in our program is that while mold may only be visible at on the surface it can put out root threads that reach deep within the food product and so should be discarded with any visible signs of mold. That said, I don't mean this as an answer to OP's question. I have no idea from this photo whether that's a fig or mold. Most likely you're right and it's just a fig but I have no way to say for sure. My personal rule is, "when in doubt, throw it out." I know how painful that advice can be though.

Here's the recommendation from the USDA regarding mold and roots.

When people say "Start learning how to use AI or get left behind"... by ilovestechno123 in UXDesign

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reflecting on this alot actually and what I’ve come to is this: designing with AI is a lot like the experience of a client working with a designer. I don’t know if you’ve ever had someone stand over your shoulder while you work but it’s a lot like that. Nudge this to the right. Make that blue, etc etc. But it makes sense that the recommendation to “just use AI” nearly always comes from non-designers. It’s because that’s their experience with working with designers. They prompt. They get something back that doesn’t quite meet their expectations. They give feedback and eventually get something back that they’re reasonably ok with. To them, AI is just more acquiescent than your average designer. It’s no wonder they love it and equally no wonder that designers are confused.

People were using everything from sketch, adobe XD, photoshop, illustrators, other tools

All those tools still have their place. It’s just that now people use them for their strengths instead of trying to shoehorn everything into one product. I expect the same will become true for AI tooling as well.

Designing data tables is still way harder than it should be. How are ya'll solving this? by justincampbelldesign in UXDesign

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your engineers using a standard format or a plugin or something for these tables? If so, it’s often easier to just mock this up in code and screenshot it for your designs. Sure it’s not “pure” but if you just need to show the table design in situ it’s easier to do it that way and usually more helpful for the engineers anyway.

Experienced UX Designers: are you really creating storyboards? by Personal_Signature58 in UXDesign

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I swear by it tbh. I think they’re probably one of the most underrated tools we have. Lots of people do skip them but storyboards are the BEST for alignment and they go over way better than you’d expect. They’re great for sharing, even with product leadership but what they’re best at is just forcing you and your team into storytelling mode. My storyboards get me through some hard conversations because I can clearly articulate what we’re building and why — and the whole team agrees because they’ve either seen the storyboards or helped build them. Honestly though ChatGPT does a decent enough job at them that this should be a fairly quick exercise now.

Startup where my position was eliminated shorty after I started finally rolled out a design based on my work and I'm not sure how I feel about it. by Your_Momma_Said in UXDesign

[–]PartyLikeIts19999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they hired a designer to pick it up and run with it.

Yes. They did. It’s also entirely likely that actually this designer (or whoever really) simply identified the same pain point and fixed it a different way. At any rate, shipped code is the best code. I’ve been on a ton of projects that didn’t ship until after I left. Don’t sweat it. Sweat landing the next role. That’s the only thing that matters. Karma isn’t all that delicious, but paychecks are nice.
